VALISE
ELISE WITT
EMW-1010 © 2009 EMWorld Records

a suitcase of Global, Local & Homemade Songs

VALISE is available for online purchase through paypal
Known for her eclectic taste in music, her community activism, and her travels around the world, Elise's original songs include Clothes Swap (a funky ode to the virtues of re-cycling and girl gatherings), Set Us Free (inspired by the words of Reverend Timothy MacDonald at Martin Luther King Jr.'s 80th birthday celebration at the National Historic Site in Atlanta), Venus Between Us (a tribute to Soul Music), Ma Roulotte (a french gypsy jazz waltz, co-written with partner Mick Kinney), Butterfly's Mysteries (a scientific boogie, written at the Callaway Gardens Butterfly House), Verkehrte Welt (Crazy Mixed Up World, a German paradox poem à la Oh Suzanna), and Blessed Nation (original music by Elise Witt to a poem by folk icon Pete Seeger).

Musicians contributing to Elise WItt's VALISE include Moira Smiley & VOCO, John McCutcheon, The Rosin Sisters (Barbara Panter, Ann Whitley, Jan Smith) ,  Sol y Canto musicians Rosi & Brian Amador, Mick Kinney, Kinah Boto, Mike Haid, Neal Starkey, Bill Burke, Ken Gregory, Frank Hamilton, Don Erdman, Jonny Hibbert, the Hotlanta Horns, Susan Ottzen, Phyllis Free, Joyce & Jacque, Deidre McCalla, Virginia Schenck, Craig Rafuse, slam poet Theresa Davis, R.I.S.E. artist Leah Smith, Cis Hinkle.

Songs on the CD contributed by other writers include the dreamy Singing in My Sleep (composed for Elise by Atlanta harpist Susan Ottzen), Jackie (a brief history of Bebop by Lambert, Hendrix & Ross), Maria Elena Walsh's Como La Cigarra (Like the Cicada - an Argentine anthem to the power of music for survival), Marlene Dietrich's I Still Have a Suitcase in Berlin, and a couple of wonderful duets with the inimitable Mick Kinney.

A Review of VALISE

Elise Witt is one of those local treasures that nobody knows about. The multi-linguist from Switzerland, who has called Atlanta home since 1977, has been a cultural ambassador to South Africa, China, Italy, Nicaragua and Switzerland, represented Georgia for the Kennedy Center's 25th Anniversary Celebration, has studied under Bobby McFerrin, sung under the direction of Robert Shaw for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus for 20 years, created singing workshops for adults and children all over the globe, and hosted musicians from outside countries to play locally.
The kicker is, in addition to all that, she has one of the purest and sweetest voices you are likely to ever hear. Valise is Witt's "suitcase of global, local, and homemade songs." Witt was a German-speaking three-year-old when her family moved to the States from Switzerland. Her more recent work with refugee families in Atlanta caused her to look back upon her own new beginnings in a foreign country and pay homage to that time, which she does here with a wonderfully diverse and eclectic mix.
When you are as nice and as well-traveled as Witt, you make a lot of friends, and she seems to call upon almost every one of them on this CD. The most obvious example is on Blessed Nation, a poem written by Pete Seeger in which Witt added some lyrics and a melody. Besides her three-woman chorus, Witt calls upon folk legend and recent Atlanta transplant John McCutcheon for lead vocals for one verse, and former Weaver and co-founder of the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, Frank Hamilton, for another. Longtime partner Mick Kinney adds his piano and vocals (and violins, and accordions, and guitars, etc.) throughout, most notably on Our Favorite Things, in which Kinny updates the lyrics from the Sound of Music classic tune. In this modern version, "Thai food and T'aiChi, Qigong and I Ching/These are a few of my favorite things."
But this CD is all Witt. She pays homage to the old Motown style on Venus Between Us, then to bebop with Jackie. She even does a bit of Seuss-ian rap on Clothes Swap. She sings in German, French, and Spanish. She scats, swings, and serenades. She takes the listener on a journey throughout the world of music, and what a delightful journey it is!

LOVE BEING HERE
ELISE WITT
EMW-1009 © 2003 EMWorld Records

LOVE BEING HERE is the ninth recording on Elise's own EMWorld Records label. The title comes from a Peggy Lee song, "I Love Being Here With You." This CD marks a new musical direction for Elise, who for years has been known around Atlanta and around the country as an international folk songstress.
LOVE BEING HERE takes Elise in a more jazz and world music direction, with accompaniments including piano, horns, accordion, cello, and southern African 'mbira.
Over half the songs are Elise's own compositions. "The Farmer & The Gypsy" is accompanied by a string arrangement by Daniel Brown from the Twittering Machine. "Looking for Ways to Disappear" rocks with Col. Bruce Hampton & The Code Talkers' guitarist Bobby Lee Rogers. "Mimosa Time" is a simple and delicate accordion waltz. "You Know" is a rousing gospel song with Francine Reed pianist Jez Graham and backing vocals by Joyce & Jacque and DeDe Vogt. And "Un Día Antes" is a completely improvised melody and piano accompaniment to a poem by Buenos Aires poet Carlos Schroeder which Elise wrote during her residency at the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences.
LOVE BEING HERE also expands on Elise's international repertoire. The CD includes (by popular demand) Edith Piaf's "La Vie en Rose;" "Manha de Carnaval," the theme from the Brazilian movie "Black Orpheus;" a turn of the century Italian Neapolitan love song; "Si Tú Supieras," a Cuban tango by Jorge Guitart; plus a 19th century German poem set to music by Elise in an homage to the Lieder of Mendelssohn (her great great great great uncle), Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms, the music of her parents' youth.
Rounding out the CD are "You Got Me" and "Bonne Nuit Lullaby," two absolute gems by Atlanta composer/lyricist Mick Kinney (Creative Loafing's Critic's Pick); "You're My Favorite Dish," a Fats Waller tribute to love and food; and the bluesy title track, a classic from Ms. Fever Peggy Lee.

WHO'S THAT STRANGER?
A film by George King
"Who's That Stranger?" is a 30 minute documentary about a remarkable musician, Kasper 'Stranger' Malone.  At 95, Stranger holds the Guinness World Record for the longest recording career in history (1926-2005).  When we shot the film in 2004 & 2005, he was playing two or three gigs a week-often traveling alone by Greyhound Bus with all his instruments.  As the baby boomers prepare to retire and many Americans come face-to-face with their own aging, this film presents an inspiring picture of vitality from someone who simply kept working, 30 years beyond retirement.
The DVD is priced at $25 a copy plus $5 shipping and handling.
