Colonial Fancher Given Names
This section reviews Colonial
America customs and traditions of naming their children. It also reviews the names used in
early Fancher families. Shown below are frequently used sources of sons and daughters
names in the customary order of use.
First son
Named
after his father
Second son

fathers father
Third son

Other daughters Named after an aunt,
other family members, and close family friends
In those days, the men were
more dominant than women in society, and the fathers line was considered more
important. Sometimes, few names from the mothers side would be used.
William An Important Family Name
William, David, Richard, and John Fancher
were the original Fancher Families in Connecticut plus Catherine and Hannah who are
sisters of these four. The following list of the four male families shows the similarity
of the names used within their family by each of the brothers.
Name of
brother Names of Sons
William
William, John, Richard, David
John
David, William, John
David
David, William
Richard
Richard, William, David
As shown above, William named four of his
sons the same names as the four original brothers and a daughter had the same name as his
sister. David had two of his sons with the same name as his brothers. Richard had three
sons the same name as a brother. John had three sons with the same name as a brother.
Within this family, William was an
important name to the four brothers. Richard had a son William who died and he named
another William. It should be noted that William, Richard, and John named their second son
William. In many early family customs, the second was named after the fathers
father. It would be a appropriate assumption that the four brothers father was named
William.
Following is a detailed
listing of the Colonial Fancher Families naming patterns, showing their childrens
given names in the order of their birth and a possible source of the given name of that
child. Joseph Fancher of Cape May County, New Jersey is not included because the names of
his children, with the exception of his daughter Abigail, are unknown. But it should be
noted that both John and Richard Fancher also named a daughter Abigail
