August 1999

Dinah and I are in a state of shock at the news just received that Sister Patricia Miller, the wife of Brother William Miller, the preacher at Highbury Park in Nassau for almost 40 years is in critical condition in an Atlanta Hospital. She had an undetected brain tumor that suddenly hemorrhaged. The family has been called in and prayers are being offered everywhere for her and the family. I just talked to Brother Bill, and they are taking her into surgery at this time.

Hurricane Dennis made its slow move across Abaco. Winds were 115 miles per hour. Dinah and I rode it out with the brethren. We were in the eye of the storm for about three hours. Much damage was done to property, but no injuries or deaths were reported in the Bahamas. The building sustained some damage to shingles, steeple, and the sign in front was destroyed. Sunday was a day of thanksgiving. My lessons centered on Gratitude and Deliverance. We were able to get the plane in the hanger and spent most of the time with the brethren visiting, praying and eating pots of homemade soup.

We were thrilled with the success of the Vacation Bible School in Abaco. Todd Brunner plans to move to Marsh Harbour as the new preacher in the summer of 2000. He is a graduate of Sunset in Lubbock, Texas, and will in two semesters graduate in Missions from Abilene Christian University. He is a multi-talented young man, tireless, devoted and already loved by the people of Abaco and other places in the Bahamas he has visited. Dinah and I are excited by the prospect of working with him in the future. He had assembled a great team to help with the Vacation Bible School. They included: Dr. Doug Campbell M.D., Dona Kolde R.N. both of Memphis. Also Bubba Cooke a graduate Student at Harding in Memphis, Andrea Baker a student at ACU from Nashville, and Todd Brunner. The group was tireless. They conducted VBS in the mornings from 9:00 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. They worked with teens from 6:00 P.M. till 8:00 P.M. In addition they were involved in visiting in the community and teaching studies as well as assisting with Ladies Bible Class and Preaching and teaching classes. They made a place for themselves in the hearts of the people of the Island. Three teenaged young men were taught and baptized during the week, and the days following: Rony Duroseau, Jack Petit, and Lynden Evans.

Dinah and I were privileged to be in Freeport for one weekend this month. We are most impressed with this congregation. They have an attendance of about 135 each Sunday Morning. They have two preachers who support themselves, a C.P.A. and an executive with the electric company. They also have a youth minister who is doing a great job and is supported by the congregation. They have Mission efforts in Eleuthera, Long Island, San Salvador, and Haiti. Brother and Sister Richard Parker also spend part of the year in Freeport as Missionaries, and Les and Betty Retherford are working in Freeport for several more months. They were members of the congregation where my Dad preached in Pampa, Texas in 1968. In addition, William and Lila Harris worship with this congregation. He preached in Andros Island for several years. They have several more men who preach, and have a great potential in leadership.

I got an e-mail this week from a lady in Canada. I am often amazed at the far reaching influence of the Study Materials that we have written and how they are used free of charge all over the world. This is part of her note:

Dear Brother Caskey,

Greetings, I was baptized in Jamaica 14 years ago. I am now residing in Montreal, Canada. In Jamaica I had the opportunity of owning and using several of the publications authored by your father and yourself. I currently have one copy each of "What Every Christian Should Know", and " The Christian Increases". How can I get more copies of these books.?

We have a situation here where several of the young ladies were baptized by missionaries but were really never taught. These materials may go a long way in helping these sisters. I am willing to purchase these books as soon as I know how to go about getting copies.

May God continue to bless you and your family for the great work you continue to do in his name.

In Christian love and fellowship,

Janette Martin

I was delighted to tell her that these and hundreds of other materials are available to Mission points free of charge in several languages from Mission Printing in Arlingtion, Texas. This great work started by my parents uses hundreds of retired volunteers to print and ship materials to mission points all over the world. Without their help most of us would not have the tools we need to teach and share.

We had the plane down for a few days this month in Marsh Harbour, and had to get a new exhaust system out of the United States. The exhaust seemed fine at the Annual Inspection a few weeks ago, then suddenly developed leaks all over the place. The new system should last between 15 and 20 years.

Thank you for your prayers. Please pray for the Millers. We are thankful to each of you for your sacrifice and love for lost souls. Contributions can be made to Bahama Mission Church of Christ and sent:
