Bahama Mission
September and October 2003
It has occurred to me that I am either getting slower in my older years, or I have much more to do than I did when younger. We have continued to put out the reports by e-mail, but have gotten behind on the ones we mail out. Due to the cost of postage involved, we have decided to produce a mail out report with financial information only once a quarter. This will save a considerable amount of money and time. The e-mail reports will continue to be written at various intervals. If you are not receiving the e-mail reports and would like to, contact me at david@flyingpreacher.com or you can view them at http://www.flyingpreacher.com/ on the web page. We want you to be informed and up to date on progress with the efforts being expended.
Many things are happening all over the Islands. We will soon get out our large order of Bibles made possible by an individual special contribution. We have almost finished our survey of the numbers needed in each Island. We count the students in the schools along with teachers and also the needs of the congregations.
Jason and Katrinka Quashie have been busy in Abaco involving many new students in World Bible School. They are doing this through the school system, grading them in Abaco, and delivering personal certificates of completion to the students after finishing each course. This gives them personal contact and an opportunity to set a study. We are in the process of ordering the steel and getting ready to construct an educational building. We have for years needed more classrooms. This is being made possible by special contributions from two congregations and some individuals; The Highland Church in Lakeland, Florida, and the West Broward Church in Ft. Lauderdale. We are deeply appreciative of the sacrifice and interest. The Abaco congregation plans to do all of the labor.
We have been a part of the very successful radio program sponsored by the Freeport congregation in Grand Bahama Island. This Sunday evening broadcast is heard all over the northern portions of the country. Our programs dealing with Homosexuality and the Bible have been well received. The parliament of the country has been dealing with a bill that would allow same sex marriages. I doubt that it will pass after hearing the comments of the people. We have had many requests for copies of the tapes and invitations to speak in various places.
Lincoln Young is doing well and has had a boost from summer programs and Vacation Bible Schools. There have been a number of deaths on the Island of Eleuthera from violence and Lincoln continues to work with the young people in providing opportunities for wholesome activities and study.
The men from Nassau who are spending one week-end each month in Cat Island are having good success. Brother Deveaux is 83 years old and has lost most of his eyesight. These young men have been having good crowds, have set a number of studies and have had one baptism and one brother return to the Lord.
Dinah and I will soon be going back down to Exuma to visit with the McQueen family and carry more materials for the evangelistic outreach in this new work. We plan to use World Bible School in the same effective way that it is working in Abaco. I also have a plane load of tracts and study materials ready. Steve and Suzzette are settling in to their new home. If you would like to help with this new work, you can contact Mike Gurganus with the Ringold Church in Georgia. gurganus@catt.com
Many good things have resulted from having the 33rd Annual Caribbean Lectureship in Nassau this past summer. We are all looking forward to the next one in St. Thomas. Thaddeus Bruno will be the director this year and can be contacted at diamond@viaccess.net for dates, times, and hotel reservations. We are most excited about the fact that attendance at these lectureships has changed from a few Island people to a few Americans. That does not mean that you are not welcome, it is just progress.
Dinah and I have been busy visiting with many of our supporting congregations and individuals. We believe that this is an important part of our long range plans. We too have experienced a number of weddings and funerals. Life goes on, and our task to reach men and women with the message of hope never ends.
Continue to pray for us as we conclude another Hurricane season with no damage so far.
