Obesity,
which results from gluttony or chronic overeating, is against the will
of God. The Bible condemns those whose "... god is their belly... "
(Philippians 3:19). The Bible says that the body is the temple of God
and that God will punish those who defile the body (1 Corinthians 3:16;
19-20). Exogenous obesity that occurs as a result of gluttony is
evidence of willfully harming or defiling the body.
In 1
Corinthians 9:25,27 the Bible says, 'And everyone who competes for the
prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable
crown, but we for an imperishable crown. " {27} "But I discipline my
body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others,
I myself should become disqualified " God expects the christian to be
master or controller over his or her own body, and not a slave TO the
body. The Bible says that we become slaves to anything when we allow it
to control us (Romans 6:16). This is true in many areas including
overeating and gluttony.
In Ezekiel
16:49, the Bible says, "Look, this was the iniquity of your sister
Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance
of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
" Evidently, one of the sins that brought Sodom to a depraved and sinful
state was the gluttony and satisfaction of itself with food. Such can
cause us to be obsessed with obeying the appetites of our flesh.
Similarly,
Paul wrote of the inhabitants of the island of Crete, "One of them, a
prophet of their own, said, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy
gluttons, " (Titus 1:12). Because the Cretans were this way Paul warned
Titus that the work of preaching the gospel on the island of Crete would
be a great challenge. Paul said that sometimes human beings, "... serve
various lusts and pleasures... " (Titus 3:3). This is exactly what
happens when a person fails to exercise self-control in eating and
becomes a glutton or physically obese.
The Bible
says that those who are gluttons or who are given to serving any lust of
the flesh must have their whole orientation to the flesh changed through
a renewing of the inner person (Galatians 5:16-24).
