Georgia Writers Association
Georgia Writers Association is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization that works across the state to encourage and strengthen the proficiencies of writers in both the creative and the business aspects of the writing life. We do this through an array of speakers and programs at regular meetings and through workshops, conferences, seminars, retreats, contests and other events; by the formation of Pods, (satellite groups) and other forms of support groups; and by the bi-monthly publication of Georgia Writers News/Mag.
Mission Statement
To serve Georgia's diverse literary communities by focusing on the skill, the craft and the art of language and communication; and by dedication to heightening cultural awareness and literacy through information, support, networking, opportunity and recognition for writers.
Georgia Writers Association is dedicated to connecting Georgia's writers with the public and one another and to encouraging and strengthening the skills of writers and readers with culturally diverse backgrounds.
Georgia Writers News/Mag, a bi-monthly publication for members, includes articles, members works; information on meeting dates, speakers and topics, and a wide variety of opportunities for writers.
We hold monthly meetings in several Georgia locations. Membership is open to all. For additional information please read on, see what this website has to offer. If you still aren't certain, contact Geri Taran, Executive Director at 770-943-5699.
Our official birth-day was June 6, 1994. Georgia Writers has grown rapidly and we have ample reason to be proud of our accomplishments. GW has already become the strongest, most viable writers' organization in the state and ranks among the best in the nation. Membership is open to all without restrictions. We attract more writers to our ranks all the time and keep our old members happy also. Pods keep increasing in number as leaders come forward to take responsibility.
Our publication Georgia Writers News/Mag continuously receives rave reviews. Monthly meetings are well attended and deeply appreciated by members and guests alike. Enthusiastic members tell us how their writing has improved, sold, etc. as a result of their involvement with GW. Our Dedicated Workgroups (small groups that commit to one year of concentrated work critiquing each other's manuscripts) literally exploded into being when the idea was presented to members. Based on our focus on excellence, we have attracted publishers and agents who accept manuscripts for consideration from GW members who have been through this process.
The 33rd Annual Georgia Author of the Year Awards event in 1997 elicited an invitation from Mercer University Press to present the awards on the Macon campus of Mercer University, with their support.
Nominations for the 38th Annual Georgia Author of the Year Awards closed December 31, 2001. The event was held, for the fifth year, at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia on March 16, 2002. See the list of winners.
We are very proud of our organization and the many fine people who take responsibility for our outstanding success: members, leaders, presenters and community cheerleaders. Come and pay us a visit...
