Mystery People – who are these people and how are they related?

If you have any additional information on any of these individuals please e-mail Ginny Chung with the details.

  • ASKABY, ELINA -  Elina Askaby, age 30 is listed living with Carl Dirksmeier in 1855.  It is presumed that she was the nanny taking care of Carl’s 2 children from his first and second wives.   What happened to her after Carl remarried?  Was she a relative?  Carl remarried 2 years later to Theresa Plumer.  Elina did not show up on the 1860 census at that time.
  • CAMPBELL, ROSE ANN -Rose Ann Campbell is listed as godmother to Catherine Donahoe in 1872.  I have not the faintest idea how this woman may be connected to the Donahoe and Parker family.
    • Checking the city directories may uncover some additional clues to determine whom this woman was.
    • Checking vital records for death or marriage of Rose Ann Campbells may also bear some further clues.

  • COOK, CATHERINE -Catherine Cook was buried with Patrick Donahoe’s family plot.  Cemetery record indicates a woman age 57, who was interred October 31, 1887. Looking through the death records in 1887 we find 3 Catherine Cook’s who died in Massachusetts in 1887.  The closest candidate is no. 3.  This may be one of the many individuals who were too poor or had no family so the church found a plot for them to buried.
    1. Catherine Cook nee Carroll died December 24, 1887 at City Hospital age 34 years and 4 months.
    2. Catherine C Cook died September 13, 1887, single, and age 42 of Phthisis.  Born in Ire, parents Thomas and Mary.
    3. Catharine Cook nee O’Connor, died October 15, 1887, age 55, married, residing at 109 Brighton St. Milton, born in Ire.  Parents Hugh and Mary of Ire
  • COORT, ROBERT - Robert Coort was also buried with Patrick Donahoe’s family plot. (Buried October 16 1890, age 67). The spelling on the cemetery record was not clear.  The surname could be COOK.  Checking his death record, it listed his age of death as 67.  He died of old age and lived at Little Sisters of the Poor.  His parents were John and Mary of Ire.  Robert could be one of the many poor the church found family plots to be buried upon their death. He is listed as a widower - Could this be Catherine Cook's spouse?
  • CROWLEY, MICHAEL -Michael Crowley is listed as godfather to Mary Donahoe in 1862.  Mary is the daughter of Patrick Donahoe and Mary Parker.   Margaret Cotter writes, “ Superintendent of Boston Police Michael Crowley had a son, Arthur, who was a buddy of (Babe Ruth)- ballplayer, a daughter who died (dieting).  I don’t know if he had any more children. Michael Crowley was a cousin to my father (Daniel Donahoe).  It must have been his father who was Aunt Mame’s godfather as the Michael Crowley I knew was the same age or younger than Aunt Mame. “

"I think the Crowley’s came from Lawrence, Mass.  They were all at my uncle Bill's wake, including Superintendent Crowley, who asked me, 'which one is your father...Bill, Dan or Joe?' recalled Margaret Donahoe Cotter.
Checking the 1900 Census we find 1 possible candidate each for the godfather and the son, which Margaret remembers.  Below, based off of 1880, 1900, and 1920 census are their family outlines.

In 1867 John and Catherine Crowley lived at 24 Athens Drive and John is listed as a switchman.
Patrick Donahoe lived at 12 Oneida St in 1892, which is near Michael and Joanna Crowley.
Given that it was Michael son of John J. Crowley which my aunt recalls as a cousin, I suspect that John J and Michael (husband of Joanna) may have been siblings.

Dear Ginny,

  • KILROY, BRIDGET and MARGARET
Bridget Kilroy's name was uncovered searching the cemetery records of Catherine Donnelly. Checking her death record, she was the daughter of Patrick and Mary Kilroy of Ire. She was single, age 32 and was living on Prentis St at the time of her death in 1882. Catherine Lyon’s mother’s maiden name was Kilroy. They were probably cousins but further research will determine the actual relationship.  In 1870 a possible match found in Ward 9, page 55.  There was a Bridget Kilroy age 24 - Domestic Help born in Ire living with the Fox family (Charles A - 29, Emma - 23, Emma - 1)

Kilroy, Margaret 65 December 17 1890 Mt. Calvary, Section 5 Range 40 is also buried there.  Her death record states she died Dec 16 1890 of old age.  She lived at Reimo Place and was born in Ire to John Kelley and Catharine Murray.  She was married.

Checking the 1870 census - I found no matches for Margaret Kilroy.  Checking the 1880 census, I find ... Could this be mother/daughter? If so, it still doesn't explain the relationship to Catherine Lyons or James Fallon?

  • LYONS, CATHERINE (Ward, Donnelly)-  Catherine Lyons was first found as a result of a query to a distant cousin, Charlie Dowd. He had been searching through his parent’s papers and came across a burial plot purchased by his grandfather, James Fallon in 1889. In  1903 he buried a woman named Catherine DONNELLY there. Catherine Donnelly, nee Ward, husband James, father Lawrence, mother Mary Kilroy died July 1, 1903 of exhaustion.  She was a resident of the Insane Hospital for the last for the last 2 years of her life.  Her death record was very obscure and I found it had her first husbands surname as her maiden name. Searching the 1900 census record and then the 1880, 1920, I was able to determine that Catherine Donnelly was married previously to someone name WARD. Finding that marriage record, Catherine's true maiden name was uncovered as Lyon. Catherine Lyon Ward Donnelly's parents were listed as Lawrence Fallon and Mary Kilroy on her death record and Timothy and Jane Lyons on her marriage record.  How could Catherine be connected to  James Fallon?      Finding further information on the Ward descendants may uncover the mystery?

·  MCGOVERAN, MARGARET - Margaret McGoveran is listed as godmother to Patrick Donahoe and Mary Parker’s last child, Joseph Patrick Donahoe in 1876.  At this time I haven’t faintest what the connection, if any, Margaret McGoveran has to this family.  Checking the 1880 Census index did not uncover possible candidates.

  • O’NEILL  C., O’NEILL MICHAEL,O’NEILL PATRICK - These 3 O’Neill’s showed up as sponsors to various children of Patrick Donahoe and Mary Parker in 1857 and then again in 1876.  Purely by the fact that they all had the same surname makes me wonder if they were related.  Checking the 1860 census for Massachusetts I find a Michael O’Neill approximately the same age as Patrick and Mary.  They also have a son Patrick who 19 years later may have been the godfather to Joseph Patrick Donahoe.

Checking for the birth records of any of the 3 children might give further clues on which these O’Neill's are and how they may be related to the Donahoes/Parker clan. < Note: None of these birth records could be found in Massachusetts, also no marriage record was found>

  • O’NEILL , THOMAS ‘TIP” - I stumbled upon the fact that Thomas ‘Tip” O’Neill, a Boston native; family came from the Mallow Cork area.  Could the 2 O’Neill families be connected?  Below is a brief biography of the Speaker of the House.  Further investigation will be needed to determine if these 2 O’Neill families are connected.

Thomas P. O'Neill JR., who was speaker of the U.S.House of Representatives from  1976 - 1987 has his roots firmly entrenched in Mallow.  Mr.O'Neill's great great grandparents, Daniel O'Connell and Catherine Quinlan, were married in Mallow on 16th August 1797. After her husband's death, in the 1820s, Catherine immigrated to America with some of her children. She remained there for a
