Unsolved Mysteries

Every researcher comes across some names in their research, which puzzle the researcher. They may have been one of their children’s sponsors?  Enumerated with them on the census?  Came up in a discussion with relative?...etc? How was this person relevant to the family?  In some cases, following these mysterious people have uncovered a bundle of genealogical information, I would not otherwise have found.

Below is my miscellaneous research to-do’s list – followed by my 2 main mysteries?  Then we always have the unknown individual who shows up in our ancestor’s life.

MANNING clan - Place of Origin Mystery

My biggest unsolved mystery is where did the Manning family originate from. – some say Kerry – some say Cork – but where is the proof???  Checked the Mallow Heritage center and found no hits.

What do I know:

1.        5 siblings arrived in Boston at different times

1.        Johanna Manning (1828 – 1903)

§          Immigrated before 1869 – possibly with brother Dennis and John

§          Single never married

§          Bought a deed for cemetery November 30 1868 in Calvary Cemetery where she and her sister are buried

§          Made out a will leaving everything to Anna Manning

§          Resided   1868 - 1902 3379 Washington St, Jamaica Plains

2.        Dennis Manning (1831 – 1868)

·         Name: Denis Manning Arrival Date: 30 Apr 1866 Age: 26 years Estimated Birth Year: abt 1840 Gender: Male Port of Departure: Queenstown, Ireland and Liverpool, England Ship Name: Bosphorus Port of Arrival: Boston, Massachusetts – he arrived with John age 25 and ? age 28

§           is noted on Johanna Mannings headstone of dying in 1869

§          No body is buried in the plot

§          Resided

·          1868         90 Cove St. Boston, MA

§          Death record of Dennis Manning living at 90 Cove St who died in  Nov 28, 1868 in Boston.– age 30 male single, born in Ireland, Laborer -  died of Phithis – parents John and Ellen Manning

3.        John Manning (1832 – 1888)

§          Immigrated possibly with brother Dennis in the 1860s or early 70s

§          Married his wife Eliza McCann in Boston  in 1873 in Boston  - sponsors were David Walsh and Mary A O’Brien

§          Eliza Manning claims to have not been naturalized – which means her husband was probably not naturalized.

§          Resided

·          1887-1898 277 or 281 W. Fourth St Boston

·          1899 - 1901 593 E. Fifth St, Boston, MA

·          1905-1925 133 M. St, Boston, MA

4.        Anna Manning (1838 – 1908)

§          immigrated the 1860s – single never married

§          Also known as Nancy and Anne Manning

§          made out a will leaving everything to her 2 nephews John Manning and 2 nieces Ellen Donahoe and Ellen Keaney

§          Resided   1868 - 1908 3379 Washington St, Jamaica Plains

5.        Jeremiah Manning (1840 – 1896)

·         He and his wife Margaret Cronin immigrated to US about 1872 with their son John from England - Name: Margaret Manning Arrival Date: 21 Jun 1870 Age: 38 years Estimated Birth Year: abt 1832 Gender: Female Port of Departure: Liverpool, England Ship Name: Tarifa Port of Arrival: Boston, Massachusetts – A Jerry age 40 and child age 1 also listed.

§          A Jerimiah Manning became an American citizen on September 16, 1872.  On this document, they list Jerimiah's occupation as liquor dealer. Upon checking the city directories I can confirm that this was indeed a different Jerimiah MANNING than my ancestor.

§          There was a Jerry Manning, age 40, who arrived in Boston on June 20, 1870 by the S.S. Serifa.  He listed his wife Margaret age 38 and an infant Janie as passengers.  This could be the same Manning family as the date of arrival as well as the individual names appear to match.  But this Jerry Manning listed his place of birth as Scotland, not Ireland.  This in itself does not rule him out as a match.  At this time I am leaning towards that this is the right Manning given names, ages and time frame

§          Ellen Frances Manning was baptized on Apr 9 1873 at St James the Greater in Boston – god parents were Jeremiah Ryan and Mary Lenehen  (in 1870 there was a Jeremiah Ryan living at the same place)

§          Jeremiah’s youngest son Jeremiah was baptized Sept 21 1878 at St James the Greater – sponsors were Jacabus Dusey and Anna Sullivan

§          Resided

·          1873-1891         90 Cove St. Boston, MA

·          1893-1895         171 Kneeland St

·          1896 - 1899       31 Albany St, Boston, MA

·          1900                   160 West Fourth St. Boston, MA

§         John Manning – son of Jeremiah and Margaret was born in England

·         Oral history says he was a twin born on the trip over

·         John’s 1900 census says he was Naturalized – no record has been found.

·         John’s marriage records states he was baptized in London Feb 6 1870 – sponsors at marriage are William Cassidy and Margaret Saunders

·         From a researcher online I found : Greater London births between 1868 and 1872 - all would appear to be in the right "Quatrer" for January/February births; 2 in the right year.....
