The Best Pirate Moments of All-Time
Or
Pirate Ball Games I'd like to see
Last Updated 26 January 2002
On the Pirate e-mail list, we threw around this topic: "If you could travel back in time to
any Pirate ball game, which ones would you choose?" There were many great responses,
and perhaps you'd like to send me a few of your own thoughts too. I might post them here.
Here are the Top 10 Pirate games that I would like to see:
"I enjoyed everyone's input on Chuck's 'Conversation Topic'. I have thought
hard about my choices. Many are repeats, but a few are new ideas.
Also, I'd like to add this twist to the topic. If we can travel back to watch this game again,
can we be like the Quantum Leap guy (Sam Beckett) and offer a little advice to the players?
For example:
- 1959, Haddix's perfect game into the 13th:
- "Harvey, I think I'd walk this Adcock guy".
OK, here's the rest of my list.
- 1909 World Series:
- Ty Cobb vs Honus Wagner.
Maybe the greatest match-up ever on a diamond.
- 1925 World Series:
- I'd like to see the Bucs derail Walter "Big Train" Johnson.
15 Bucco hits and a Kiki Cuyler double in the 8th inning
of Game 7 beat Johnson and the Senators.
- May 25th, 1935:
- Babe Ruth hits #712, #713, and #714 at
Forbes Field. The last one
clears the Right Field roof (the 1st person to do it). I'd pay some kid a
couple bucks to stand outside the ball park for me and try to get the ball.
I'd enjoy the ball for about 5 minutes, then donate it to Cooperstown.
- 1959:
- Dick Stuart hits the
longest ball ever at Forbes Field on June 5th.
Stuart cleared the deepest part of the park (457') with an estimated 500 foot
blast. Sam Beckett's advice: "Dick, you might want to take some extra
fielding practice".
- 1960 World Series:
- Maz's Home Run in the 7th game. "Maz, just
hit it on the nose and get something going".
- 1970:
- The last game at Forbes Field. I
was there the 1st time, but I'd do it again.
- I'd also go to the 1st game at Three Rivers Stadium.
I recall that the game (and pre-game) were on TV because there was so much
secrecy about the "new" Pirate uniforms - the first knit style uniform in the
ML.
- 1972:
- Roberto Clemente's 3,000th hit.
I am too young to have seen Ralph Kiner play, so I
would want to see him poke a few out of the yard. I'd guess he had a couple 3-HR games
I could choose from.
I think I already listed 10, but allow me one more:
I'd like to see Maz and
Alley turn just one more Double Play. No DP team
ever was a smooth as those two. If we can fast forward too, I'd like to
attend the Hall of Fame induction for Billy Maz when he is finally inducted
to the HOF by the Veteran's committee.
A few other Memorable Moments from various collections/submissions:
- 1971 World Series:
- I followed this series through radio and TV. I was
in attendance at one of the playoff games versus the Giants, but I would go back and
savor every pitch of this Fall Classic and admire the showcase of talent displayed by
Roberto Clemente. Pssst - Bob Robertson - ignore
that bunt sign (again).
- 1979 World Series:
- The Bucs were down 3 games to 1, but stormed back to win
the series. It's been so many years since the Bucs' last World Series appearance, I'd like
to apreciate this series even more.
- 1903, Bucs beat Cy Young in the first World Series game:
- The Bucs lost
the series, but they beat the best pitcher of the day in the first Fall Classic.
- 1956:
- Dale Long homers in 8 consecutive games.
Is there something here you like, that needs to be changed,
or would you like to see something that is not included?
