This year's scouting report was prepared by Wilbur Miller in the same spirit as we've
seen here in previous years from Mark Jareb. I'll also try to provide a few links to various
sites that analyze the Pirates farm system and prospects.

In recent years, Mark Jareb added a page for each player that combines the
previous Scouting Reports. For example, you can see
Jason Kendall's consolidated
report on the web. Mark's list of player files can be found in his
directory.
Top Prospects Position-by-Position Report Pirates Scouting Report:
Wilbur Miller provides excellent insight, analysis, first-hand observations, and the
all-important depth
chart by position that shows where the Bucs may be strong, and where
the organization may need some additional help.

You can find current stats on Pirate farm hands (in season) at various
web sites. You can find links to these sites in the
Minor League
section of Glenn's Pirates Page. USA Today, CNN, Nando, and Pirateball are all good
resources for information.
The Prospect Report:
Kevin Goldstein provides his snapshot of the NL Central and the Pirate Prospects. Tony Alverez
is given a long shot to make the majors this year. Humberto Cota is the planned back-up behind
the plate. Jose Castillio could break out at AA Altoona and more fearless predictions and
projected issues. Sean Burnett (#42) makes Kevin's
Top 100 Prospect List; Jose
Castillio (#54), Bryan Bullington (#55), and John Van Benschoten (#58) also crack the Top 100. Kevin
provides a Top 10 List for the Pirate Prospects: add
Jose Bautista, Tony Alverez, Chris Young, Walter Young, JJ Davis, and Ian Oquendo to your Prospect watch list. Get the
"Skinny" and a 2003 Outlook on each player.
ESPN's John
Sickles provides a look at the Pirates minor leagues. He provides this list of players who
he says "Will Help Soon": Tony Alverez, Duaner Sanchez. He also lists players
that "Will Help Someday", a "Key Sleeper", and "Other Names to Know".
Top Prospect Alert
lists a Top 10 list (with details), another four prospects, and another 24 "Other Prospects".
Not updated for 2003 yet.
Mike Emeigh provides a
detailed preview
of the 2003 Pirates at the Baseball Primer.
Gary Reed lives in Florida and runs The Florida
State League prospects web site (not affiliated with the Class A League of the same name).
From his Sarasota home, he can easily scout the baby
Bucs in nearby Bradenton. He offers a hitters
prospect report and a pitchers prospect
report.
Annually, Baseball America lists the
NL Central's Top 10 Prospects. This year (again), they have put the report in subscriber's only
area. Baseball America's Top Ten Pirate Prospects for 2003:
