Upon agreement of the commission, the client will be contacted to discuss the size, framing, and setting of the portrait, as well as the ambiance and dimensions of the area where the portrait will hang.
A meeting will then be scheduled wherein Mr. West will explore with a camera various poses and try to capture mannerisms and natural expressions of the client. Preliminary sketches, color studies, and notes may also be taken. This meeting usually requires one or two hours. After returning to the studio, the assignment will be executed. If working by mail, Mr. West will develop the portrait from the client's photographs of both the sitter and the environment in which the painting will hang. These details will be discussed via telephone interview. Upon presentation of the finished portrait, Mr. West will be happy to make any adjustments desired. Commissions may require four to six weeks from start to finish. [General Agreement and Prices for Portrait Commissions]
