Calculated from age given, 53 years, at the time of Jeanne Dorau's birth.
According to the autobiography of her great-grandaughter (Emma Bissett), Jeanne ran off with a Captain Petus, perhaps an early beau - taking her daughter, Melanie, but leaving her husband and older boy behind. She is also said never to have married Pertus.Records in Saint-Louis, Senegal, confirm that Jeanne had two children while married to Jean Bareste: Urbain and Melanie, although the birth record of Melanie clearly implies that Jean Bareste was not the father of Melanie. It has been suggested that the person reporting the birth, Emanuel Dubois, may be the father. It also is possible that Jean Pertus may be the father. There are no records of any Pertus marriage in Senegal - or anywhere else, for that matter. The Pertus family settled at Cascaret Island near River Bourgeois about 1843. According to census records, the eldest Pertus boy was born in Charlestown, South Carolina, just prior to that.spouse: Bareste, John Joseph (1802 - )
(Tradition in the family of Emma Bissett, on the other hand, holds that they lived for a time in New Orleans, not Charlestown.)Burial - [date: 10 OCT 1894] [place: Saint Hyacinth's Church, D'Escousse, Richmond, Nova Scotia, Canada]
Event - [date: 18 JUN 1885] [place: Barque "Jennie Cashman", Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts]
Jeanne is likely the same person identified as 'Madame Bareste', age 74, resident of Nova Scotia, who is shown arriving in Boston, Massachusetts on June 18, 1885 on the S.S. Bargue Jennie Cashman sailing from Sierra Leone, Africa. This was a small freighter carrying only one other passenger (not John Pertus) other than Madame Bareste.Birth Note
Jeanne Dorau's marriage record, by omitting any reference to her father, suggests that she is illegitimate. Her birth place (Anglet, France) and date (24 Apr 1811) are given in the marriage record. The civil index to births there shows that in the whole month of April 1811 only one female child was born: a Jeanne Jeanne on 11 Apr 1811. ("Jeanne" is a proper surname that does appear in several other birth records and one death record in that same period.) The full record shows that the mother of the child was Marie Dorau and that the birth was reported by her father. It also explicitly shows the birth to be illegitimate. No father is named.
