As contained in a footnote of the Vinton's 1864 Giles Memorial Genealogy: "The account which is given of this family was received from Mrs. Louisa Gillespie of Salem. She also says that her grandfather's name was Joseph Henry Giles; that he was tall and thin; he had a sash and tassel, a high cap with a waving plume, and, she thinks, a long sword, all of which he used to exhibit as worn by him in the Revolutionary War; and she says he was in the battle of Bunker Hill, and, as I understood, fought on the side of liberty. He was from Roxbury, or Salem. I am not sure of the identity of the grandfather of Mrs. Gillespie, with Henry Giles, . . . but consider it probable. " Vinton is wrong in his identification with the Henry Giles, who he shows to have been born in 1753 and been in the American artillery in the Revolution. Vinton may also have "seeded" the possibility in the mind of Mrs. Gillespie that her grandfather had been on the American side. Other research shows that he was a loyalist.spouse: Conrod, Anna Catherine (b1760 - )
