To the many friends of the Monte Cassino documentary film project:

Our reason for contacting you is simple: We need your financial support and introductions to funders to finish an important documentary film to be broadcast on PBS and then globally. Your check will help make world audiences aware of the men who sarificed so much at Monte Cassino.

Many of you receiving this message were either at Cassino or know someone who was there during the battles of 1944. The men who fought in the hills of Cassino and in the swamped Rapido River valley were mockingly called "D-Day Dodgers" because they had "avoided" the great invasion of Europe. For too long the battles of Cassino have been in the shadow of the Normandy Invasion.

We have worked for three years on this documentary, spending in excess of $150,000. Finishing it requires an additional $250,000. Our goal is to relate the experiences of these battles through the voices of the living veterans. The time to hear those voices is now.

At Cassino over thirty countries and a dozen military divisions were engaged for more than five months. This was a global event. We have taped interviews of Cassino veterans and experts from several countries, filmed the battlefields where men fought and died, and researched in numerous countries throughout Europe, but there is much more work to do if we are to tell the complete story.

The son of a Polish veteran who immigrated to Canada reveals, "My Dad survived Monte Cassino, but he never really left it." After fifty-five years the nightmare of Cassino continues to touch the lives of veterans and their families all over the world. And yet, few are aware of what happened there. If you feel that it is worth completing Monte Cassino, then help us at this crucial time by contributing and by introducing the project to people and support organizations and foundations.

Contributions can be made either directly to Grand Island Films or the project's fiscal sponsor, The New York Foundation of the Arts (for tax-deductible contributions).  For more specific information on How to Contribute go to the following web page:
