Rome: Trastevere
Trastevere is a very old district of Rome, falling within
the classification of "Centro Storico" ("Historical Center").
Trastevere means "on the other side of the Tiber", i.e.,
from where the Roman Forum is located, which was the heart of ancient
Rome. It is an area of historical buildings, probably built upon ancient
Roman foundations.
The buildings glow with the colors of Rome: yellow, red,
siena, and ochre. Most buildings are low (two to four floors) and the
whole area has maintained a medieval look, with narrow winding street,
small courtyards opening off imposing doorways, ancient churches, shops
(both specialty and common fare ones), numerous coffee bars, and restaurants.
The buildings are strictly protected and therefore the
looks of Trastevere are very genuine, dripping with history.
