The Trastevere quarter in Rome is extremely popular with both Romans and tourists to Italy. During the day it mostly has the busy look of any small Italian town, with people shopping, chatting, drinking their espresso, and boasting about their children. In the evening it is thronged with people "a passeggio" (walking around) and eating in the many excellent restaurants.

Trastevere is an ideal area for exploring the historical parts of Rome on foot. I hope you are a good walker, because the pleasures of visiting this and the neighboring areas on foot cannot be underestimated. Saint Peter is about twenty minutes away and upon crossing the Tiber you get to Campo dei Fiori, Piazza Navona, the Spanish Steps, the Roman Forum, and many other sights, in no time at all (20 to 40 minutes walks). If you want to take buses, the area is extremely well served. |
The people living in Trastevere are a mixture of the genuine Romans, some of whose families have lived in the area for centuries (they claim), and Yuppies (i.e., me, rather a Grumpy), who have bought and restored Trastevere properties in the last decade or so. |

The vacation apartment is located in the heart of Trastevere, Rome, on the top floor of a three-story building that was once a convent. The apartment sleeps only two. The first thing you should know is that the building does not have an elevator; so, you have to be able to walk up the steps. The apartment consists of one large room, with an extremely high ceiling, which, being directly under the roof, displays heavy wooden beams and the undersides of the roof tiles. The sleeping area is on a loft, which is reached by comfortable stairs and which has two twin beds (one of which can be pushed out of the way underneath the other one, for single dwellers), a chest of drawers, a wardrobe, and a small closet. The downstairs is the sitting, eating, and working area. Please, clean the apartment yourself. There is no maid service available. The upkeep is extremely simple. |
There is a modern bathroom (shower, no bathtub) and a modern kitchen. No dishwasher (most people seem to eat out!) and no washing machine (a laundry is nearby).

The apartment was renovated in a modern style, with a wonderful stone floor (Santafiora stone from Viterbo) and it is furnished in a combination of modern and semiantique furniture. This is my home and I go back there whenever I visit my family in Italy. You should realize that this apartment is not a typical rental property. It is kept in good functioning order, being fully furnished and ready to use the moment you walk in: sheets, towels, blankets, dishes, pots and pans, (even wine, if the person before you has left any), are all ready for use.
