Today, finally, on February 10th, 2005, there is a headline in the New York Times
about the many warnings our security community had before 9/11. Now it appears that 9/11 could have been definitely avoided. Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda, were received by the Federal Aviation Administration. And some of these reports actually and specifically discussed airline hijackings and suicide operations! Airports were warned in the spring of 2000 that if “the intent of the hijacker is not to exchange hostages for prisoners, but to commit suicide in a spectacular explosion, a domestic hijacking would probably be preferable.” Still, with these very pointed warnings, no toughening of airport screenings took place and no expanded use of on-flight air marshalls took place: - horrendous failures of our civil aviation system, wouldn’t you say? I am very upset that the Bush administration blocked the public release of the full version of this report for more than five months. Maybe it might have upset a few of the people who planned to vote for Mr. Bush to enjoy a second term in office. I tried to warn people against voting for him. Oh how I tried. I certainly did. But, to my dismay, most people don’t pay any attention to a mere ghost. Most people say they don’t even believe in ghosts. Alas and alas again. And again!
