Dear Dr. Dean, I just read about your recent speech in which you stressed the need for us Democrats to have a strong and clear message. I'm a Democrat that is extremely frustrated about our message. I think it's because Bush seems so completely wrong-headed about everything. There are so many issues now against which we need to revolt. I consider our current leadership corrupt from its very beginning (the way the Bush elections were "won" etc.)

The worst offense of the Bush administration is the war on Iraq. What a disgusting disgrace it is and a huge tragedy for our country! Is it not corrupt that the extended Bush family is directly connected to the munitions business? If it's not criminal activity, it certainly looks bad, and seems like a terrible conflict of interest at the least. Is it not corrupt that Bush is lessening restrictions on pollution entering into our environment, and donating public lands for private industry use? And just look what is being done to the sciences and research, suppressed by Bush's beliefs. All of the Bush slogans are misleading. Is this not corruption? Remember "Compassionate Conservative?" "Leave No Child Behind?" "Clear Skies?" Nothing good has been accomplished by this administration! Our reputation abroad is tarnished and damaged. The names of Bush and Cheney and the neo-cons are now linked to torture because torture has happened while under their authority. "Mission Accomplished?" What has really been accomplished by Bush? Nothing "by the people" or "for the people," either in the US or in the world at large. We urgently need moral leadership and straight-talking leadership. Simple, honest and clear leadership that can own up to mistakes, repair them and move on to take a better course, that's what we need. We need to have confidence in our government. We yearn for integrity in our government. We need to trust those in charge! A demoralization, a feeling of oppression, is taking place in our country under the Bush leadership. I, for one, am afraid of my flag now. When I see a neighbor flying an American flag I think, "Oh no, a neo-con." They must want to beat up on another country just to show the world who is boss. When I see someone wearing a cross (which I used to wear) I am afraid that person might be a "born again" Christian willing to beat up on the Muslims of this world to give them "democracy" and a "Christianity" which condones this kind of crusade. Today I'm thinking of Cindy Sheehan, who lost her son in Iraq, who is now standing and waiting on the road leading to the Bush ranch, waiting for a chance to talk with President Bush. This is what we have come to, this pathetic scene of a mother waiting on a road, in the hot Texas sun, waiting for a chance to ask Mr. Bush about his questionable war. The "Downing Street Memo" absolutely gives her the right to confront her vacationing president. So, I think our message should be what Thomas Paine would say. (He hated government that rested on hereditary privilege!) It has to be concise, the way his pamphlets were, short and to the point; something like "Stop the Insanity, Get Back to Real American Values, Get Back to Paper-trail Voting, Get Back to Fiscal Integrity, Get Back to Diplomacy, Get Back to Basic Humanity, Reclaim our Heritage of Right Makes Might!" Your friend,
