Ellsberg Speaks

Tonight I had the privilege of hearing Dr. Daniel Ellsberg speak of his experiences during the Viet Nam war, his exposing of the "Pentagon Papers" which contained the lies that lead up to the Viet Nam war. He drew comparisons between the
Viet Nam war and the Iraq war that we now wage because of the lies of the Bush administration.

Richard Nixon was interviewed by the English journalist David Frost after Nixon resigned from office because of the Watergate affair, which included lying, spying on US

citizens, and a number of other illegal operations that the Nixon administration perpetrated. Frost asked Nixon about some of these illegal operations that had gone on while he was president. Nixon said, "If the president does it, it's legal."

This is so not what the founding fathers of the United States had in mind. They did not want the US president to have the powers that a king might have. They did not want a king. They had left all that royalty business behind them in England and were making a new country, a better country with a Constitution. By the way, all of our government people, including the president, take a solemn oath to uphold this US Constitution and defend it against all enemies, foreign or domestic. Sounds good. But then Nixon came along and now Bush and his side-kick Cheney who, for some wild west Wyoming reason, doesn't want our Democracy to survive another minute. In fact, just today he is pushing to have all of his wiretapping and spying on US citizens made legal. It was illegal according to the laws we had, but now he wants new laws to make the illegal legal.

It sounds as if sometime soon the US will be akin to East Germany. People lived in East Germany. They worked. They had children. They just didn't have a democracy wherein they could be free from surveillance and government mischief, with no way to fight back. All of their rights had been replaced by a subtle prison-like state. It was drab in East Germany, dark, dreary and dank. No birds sang. And if they did, somebody would report it. There were informers everywhere. Is that what Americans want? No!

Let the sunshine in. Open up the government to transparency and truth telling. Officials who lie and lead by deception must be apprehended and punished in court. Anyone in high office who leads the country into debt and recession, panic and hopelessness, must be drummed out of office. Profit greedy warmongers must be held accountable. These few men who gain power only to hold a country like the US in a position of submission to the slavery of war, hunger and strife cannot prevail as long as there is just one Dr. Ellsberg alive to expose the fraud of these few evil men. Most of you sweet Americans want open government, moral leaders with honest hearts, and health and prosperity for all of your fellow Americans. And if you can help out the rest of the world, you will. You are good people!

God bless you.
