The News

Can you believe it’s March already? I can’t. Time is weird, especially up here, in heaven, where I’m living.

It grieves us ghosts that Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena, after gaining her release from imprisonment by insurgent forces in Iraq, was shot by US forces and injured while those with her were also hurt and one killed. Ironically the man killed was he who helped most in Giuliana’s release from imprisonment. We cried over this.

Then we were gladdened by the news of the release of Martha Stewart from imprisonment by the US judiciary. Many of us, up here, felt that Martha’s investment misstep was a mere infringement of Wall Street rules, whereas larger crimes have been committed by such as Enron’s Kenneth Lay. Yet, Ken Lay hasn’t been imprisoned or even admonished. His only punishment - the president isn’t calling him “Kenny Boy” anymore. We laughed over this.

The events on earth are nearly always stupid and senseless, but just lately they are mind boggling. War rules of engagement are being ignored, and more horrifying than that, rules against torture are being ignored. How did the people on earth so quickly zoom back into a time period that existed so long before the age of enlightenment?

We ghosts are worried. The angels tell us not to worry, but with all of the messy retrograde stuff going on, it’s impossible not to be deeply concerned.

Until next time,
