Bush Travels

Your Grandma Minutia would like you to know about her participation in "greeting" President G. W. Bush when he visited the State of North Carolina this month. I happened to be in North Carolina for a meeting of a bunch of us who passed away on 9/11, five years ago. We have maintained our interest in this particular president since we feel we have suffered tragically under his administration.

I attended two rallies against Bush on October 18th in Greensboro, NC - one rally at 12:30 at the new elementary school where he spoke (in his inarticulate way) about his plans for education (the school was very difficult to find, not on any map and almost out of town and I think this was on purpose) and another rally starting at 4:30 at the corner of Elm St. and Sunset Dr., where Bush was to show up on his way to his money raising $1,000.00 a plate dinner.

When the Bush motorcade came into view, at the almost altogether hidden school location, it was headed by many, many, many policemen on motorcycles, then came two long black limos and then all kinds of emergency vehicles, maybe a dozen. It was impressive. They moved quickly. There was no wasted time. There were helicopters overhead. (It was kind of spooky and eerie really, even for us ghosts!...)

We were a huge group at both locations, especially standing on all four corners of the intersection at Elm and Sunset at 4:30 (a much bigger crowd than would ever be reported by the press of course). We got lots of honks and thumbs up from people in passing cars. There were about 350 live protesters and about fifty of us ghosts (who are never counted of course, but we include ourselves as participants anyway.)

We protesters had a band and lots of banners and lots of spirit. All ages and ethnic backgrounds were included. We all chanted and waved our signs and banners to the heavy beat of the music. (I'd like to report that some very perceptive live protesters actually saw our ghost signs, believe it or not!) There were lots and lots of policemen present and lots of press people. (They didn't see any part of us or our signs, no indeed, they did not!)

Some people were interviewed on camera, and I heard them complaining about the deficit and about how our children and grandchildren will be paying for all of the tragic mistakes of this president, etc. and also bitter criticism of the war in Iraq, the needless deaths, the many lies, etc. etc. etc. There is no limit to the complaints we have about this administration!

All in all the Greensboro rallies were just great and gave us a lift. A couple of weeks ago I floated down to a GRIM (Grass Roots Impeachment Movement) event in Charlotte, NC and that was wonderful as well. Now I'm full of hope that in November things will go our way and we will take over Congress!

Let's hold that thought.

More soon I promise. I've been on the move so much lately that it's been difficult to get any time for writing. But I love you still and hope to be more forthcoming in the future.

Lots of love from your very own,
Grandma Minutia

PS:This is what Molly Ivins says about our ll.7.06 election:
May I remind you what this election is about? Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, unprecedented presidential powers, unmatched incompetence, unparalleled corruption, unwarranted eavesdropping, Katrina, Enron, Halliburton, global warming, Cheney's secret energy task force, record oil company profits, $3 gasoline, FEMA, the Supreme Court, Diebold, Florida in 2000, Ohio in 2004, Terri Schiavo, stem cell research, golden parachutes, shrunken pensions, unavailable and expensive health care, habeas corpus, no weapons of mass destruction, sacrificed soldiers and Iraqi civilians, wasted billions, Taliban resurgence, expiration of the assault weapons ban, North Korea, Iran, intelligent design, swift boat hit squads, and on and on.

This election is about that, but much more -- it's about honor, dignity and comity in this country. It's about the Constitution, which gives us this great nation. Bush ran on a pledge of "restoring honor and integrity" to the White House. Instead, he brought us Tom DeLay, Roy Blunt, Katherine Harris, John Doolittle, Jerry Lewis, Richard Pombo, Mark Foley, Dennis Hastert, David Safavian, Jack Abramoff, Ralph Reed, Karl Rove and an illegal and immoral war in Iraq. People, it's up to you.

So for heaven's sake, listen to Molly!
Your GM, 11.6.06
