Atrocity On The Home Front

G. W. Bush obviously does not think ahead. His mind is somewhere in a former century maybe. But whatever his problem, he is not interested in science and scientific findings that show the consequences of an environment unprotected from mercury and other harmful chemicals that cause birth defects. Mercury is a particularly damaging chemical that, under the Bush administration, has been loosed from safeguards that had been in place to make sure it would not contaminate our environment.

Bush's new environmental regulations are just plain scary in their irresponsibility toward the public. Women and children are at risk the most. If a pregnant woman lives in a state that is saturated in lax laws regarding mercury and mercury pollution, the woman and her child are both threatened. If, late in her pregnancy, a woman is found to be carrying a deformed baby, no abortion will be allowed under the new Bush law regarding fetus protection. In other words, Bush is indirectly causing birth defects in fetuses, by his reckless neglect of the environment, and he is also disallowing abortions.

Environmental protection should be for the protection of people. Therefore, we need a leader who can think ahead and plan ahead, in a humane and thoughtful way.
