But Whom To Bomb?

The hijackers, who flew into the World Trade Towers, were Saudis. But we can't blame the Saudis or else the Saudis will rat, in even a bigger way, on our poor beleaguered government.

Commercial connections between the Saudis and the Bushes extend from limited-partner investments in George W.'s failed oil ventures more than 20 years ago to the Carlyle Group, a mighty merchant bank, that until just recently employed our former President George Herbert Walker Bush. Saudi money has also figured in several of the most significant political scandals of the postwar era, notably the Iran-contra affair and the Bank of Credit and Commerce International blowup. Whatever the Saudis might say about any of those matters is probably better left unsaid—not only to protect state secrets, but also for the sake of Bush senior, the former C.I.A. director and highly suspected Iran-contra conspirator.

The whole World Trade Towers massacre could be the result of business deals just gone completely wrong! And now George Junior is in a spot. He's between sweet daddy Bush and a bunch of fickle and ferocious Saudis who no longer give a hoot about the ties that bind.

But wait, have we bombed the wrong country? Is Iraq just our stand-in "whipping boy?" Should we be damaging Saudi Arabia instead of Iraq? This reporter wants to know!
