Remember When?

The writer Mary McCarthy said of Lillian Hellman, “her every word is a lie, even her ‘and’s’ and her ‘the’s.’” That’s the way lots of us feel about G. W. Bush. If his mouth is moving, then, he, alas, is, no doubt, lying. We can’t believe one word!

He has lied about the war in Iraq, tragically for everyone. He has lied about jobs, telling us that our economy is “expanding,” when actually he has provided our country with a deficit that our grandchildren will be paying off. He has lied about the Patriot Act, just by calling it the “Patriot Act.” He has lied about education; he actually leaves every child behind. His lies about science, the environment and “no global warming” are legendary.

I don’t know whether or not he did his duty and abided by his commitment to the National Guard, but I do know he has not fulfilled his obligation to truly inform his countrymen. We now must distrust even his “and’s” and his “the’s.” And, come to think of it, I would even throw in his “uhs” when he speaks off the cuff. His sentences are always just stuffed with “uhs,” which is his way of stalling, while he tries to think of a halfway believable lie, like “uh, we had to go into Iraq.” Oh yeah...
