It is my very great honour to report the capture of two pirate vessels
during my latest voyage. The Avenger, captained by Black John Davies,
has been known for her depredations in the name of the pirate woman Ann Bonney.
She surrendered after a brief exchange of broadsides and musket fire, as
following the Indomnitable's fire the Avenger's crew was insufficient
in number to prevent a boarding action. I must commend 1st Lt. Bush for his courage
and his strong lead of the boarding charge. I regret that I must report the deaths
of Midshipman John Williams and 5th Lt. Michael Taggart during the boarding action,
as well as seamen Daniel Grissom, Robert Jackson, and George Harper. Further loss
of life was prevented by Lt. Bush's decisive leadership. I myself entered the
Captain's cabin to find he had not succeeded in destroying his charts, and there
is hope that they may lead to discovery of the island from which he sailed.
The second vessel captured was the Blanco Basura, once led by Captain El Lobo Moreno, and now acting independently in her depredations. As she lacked strong leadership, she surrendered upon the Indomnitable's maneuvering to windward and offering a broadside aimed at her stern. There was no loss of life on either side, and the pirate crew offered no resistance in transport to Ilium for trial.
The Indomnitable also engaged one of the Dread Pirate Roberts' ships, the Narrow Miss, damaging her heavily before she entered shoals too shallow for the Indomnitable's draft. Indomnitable took no damage in any of these engagements.
Your Obt. Humble Srvnt,
CAPTAIN HORATIO HORNBLOWER
