Chemistry, Philosophy, and Science Education

". . . the end of all thinking is the removal of doubt, just as the end of all nervous action is the removal of the source of irritation." Charles S. Peirce, Writings of Charles S. Peirce: A Chronological Edition, Vol. 4, page 42.

Home Page for George W. Stickel, Kennesaw, Georgia

Welcome to my home page. You will find a variety of my interests and URL's for more information. As a brief introduction to who I am, I am primarily interested in how we learn--including the techniques that work best for learning, contexts for learning, the theories for learning, and the neurophysiology for learning. What follows is for interested surfers, scholars (some working papers are and will be appended), teachers looking for some ideas, and my students.

My Special Interests

Details about My Special Interests

Philosophy
This page is under construction. An interesting topic for those interested in Faith, doubt, and beliefwill find an essay that examines the topic using philosophers from Charles S. Peirce to Alvin Plantinga. Doubt and belief, play a central role in learning. Also, for your reading pleasure, the early Christian classics can be found at Christian Classics Ethereal Library.

Chemistry
This page is under construction, but will have a calculation--laboratory activity for students to learn the relationship between quantum energy levels of electrons and wavelength of light. I have used the lab two years now and find it helps students conceptualize. Also, one can find great chemistry information with the American Chemical Society and lots of data with National Nuclear Data Center, Brookhaven National Laboratory

GLOBE Science & Education K-12 Opportunities
Globe is an international science education K-12 program where students collect data, submit it on the World Wide Web, and scientists from around the country process the data. Students collect atmospheric, hydrological, and biometric information at their school site.

Earth Science--Geology, Meteorology, Oceanography

A Short Biographical Sketch

Education includes a baccalaureate degree in chemistry from Sterling College, Sterling, Kansas, a master's in higher education administration, and a Ph.D. in philosophy of education, both from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Publications include chapters in books, essays in Proceedings of the Midwest Philosophy of Education Society, journals, and newsletters. Publications focus on learning theory, from a psychological to an anthropological perspective. I have done extensive study of the semiotic of Charles Sanders Peirce, many of the American pragmatists, neuophysiology and the chemistry of learning, and have presented papers at national and regional meetings in philosophy, chemistry education, psychology, sociology, and continuing education. I have consulted with the American Association of Schools of South American and established educational programs overseas. Memberships in professional associations include several in philosophy, education, and the American Chemical Society. I am currently teaching honors chemistry, earth science, and astronomy at Harrison High School, Kennesaw, Georgia. Our school has over 2500 students.
