USS CONSTITUTION

USS CONSTITUTION HOMEPAGE

"Old Ironsides" needs our help to be able to sail under her own power. On July 21, 1997 she sailed under the power supplied by 6 sails. The following campaign continues to supply her with a full set of 36 sails.

USS CONSTITUTION, launched in 1797, and perhaps better known as, "Old Ironsides", is the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world. On July 21,1997, she celebrated her Bicentennial by conducting a special operational sail in Massachusetts Bay. This was the first time since 1881 that CONSTITUTION sailed under her own power. As this country enters the next century we want "Old Ironsides" to be able to sail, thereby demonstrating to all nations that the United States' dedication to freedom and democracy is just as strong in the 21st Century as it was in the 18th, 19th, and 20th.

To do this sails must be obtained for "Old Ironsides". To get them a special "Old Ironsides Pennies Campaign Committee" has been established. The "Old Ironsides Pennies Campaign" will raise funds to equip USS CONSTITUTION for sail, including, but not limited to, the purchase of sails and related materials, and to further the mission of USS CONSTITUTION. All donations will be received and expended for the purposes herein stated, by and under the direction of the USS CONSTITUTION Museum. The museum is a tax exempt corporation dedicated to teaching about the origins and continuing story of USS CONSTITUTION. The museum makes the commitment that 100% of all funds collected in this campaign will go to the ship. None will be used for any administrative or promotional expenses of any kind whatsoever.

We can help by contacting the museum and starting an "Old Ironsides Pennies Committee" in our home towns. We can mobilize our friends, local businesses, schools, colleges, and universities and start collecting pennies (and dollars) to buy sails for "Old Ironsides". Send out the S O S to sail our ship.

Please send all donations to: "Old Ironsides" Pennies Campaign; Charlestown Cooperative Bank; 201 Main Street; Charlestown, MA 02129.

Please send correspondence to: USS Constitution Museum; P.O. Box 1812; Boston, MA 02129; Phone: (617) 426-1812; FAX: (617) 242-0496.

The curriculum is suitable for students of all ages. The curriculum furthers the USS Constitution's bicentennial objective of reconnecting the ship to the principles contained in the Constitution of the United States, for which the ship was named. Please urge your local schools to avail themselves of this most important curriculum. To obtain a copy of the curriculum, please contact Stephanie M. Nichols at (617) 426-1812 or write to her at the USS Constitution Museum, P.O. Box 1812, Boston, MA 02129.
