Books that helped us plan for the trip or helped while on our trip:

"Mountain Directory West for Truckers, RV, and Motorhome Drivers" by Richard W. Miller

This is a book that describes the mountain passes in very good detail. The new 1999 edition has 400 mountain passes in the Western edition. They also have an edition for the Eastern states. I remember driving west over Wolf Creek Pass in southern Colorado in 1988 not knowing what was in store for me. If I had known what the pass was like I would have been prepared, but I descended only having the information that the road map gave me. It was a very uncomfortable descent. If I had had the R & R Publishing book, then I would have known what was ahead of me and my comfort level would have increased. I bought a copy of this book for Dave & Julie before they left on the trip and I know of at least one road they did not take because of the book. I will never tow in the mountains (east or west) without a copy of this book handy.

Another source of the book is direct from R & R Publishing, Inc.. R & R and Amazon are both the same price, the only difference may be the shipping and handling or the one you are more comfortable ordering from. I have also seen it at some bookstores and camping places like Camping World.
