The NSAI
bulletin for the Los Angeles area Workshop
July-August 2002
Super Saturday
On Saturday, September 7, we will be combining an all-day seminar
with an All-Star house concert. The seminar will be led by hit songwriter
Jason Blume (“Change My Mind”). Jason has had success in both the
pop and country markets with cuts by artists such as John Berry, Britany
Spears, and the Backstreet Boys. Jason will talk about lyric and melody
writing and the music business.
In the evening, there will be a concert to benefit the NSAI Los Angeles
Regional Workshop. The performers will
include hit songwriters Jerry Fuller (“Young Girl“), Jeff Silbar (”Wind
Beneath My Wings“), Wendy Waldman ("Save The Best For Last") plus Teresa
James and the Rhythm Tramps. There will also be some surprise cameos:
Jason Blume, Kenny Edwards (Stone Ponies) and others.
The seminar will be held from 10:00am-5:00pm at Kulak’s Woodshed, 5230
1/2 Laurel Canyon Blvd., North Holly-
wood. The cost is $35 for NSAI members and $45 for non-members if paid
in advance; $50 at the door. To register, send a check made out to Craig
Lackey, 1045 3rd Street #205, Santa Monica, CA 90403. Include your
phone number and email address.
Jason will also be available on Sunday for one-on-one consultations.
There will only be (7) slots available - - 9:00am, 10:00, 11:00, 1:00pm,
2:00, 3:00, and 4:00pm. The fee is $95/one hour. In that time
he typically does in-depth critiques of three or four songs (or lyrics)and
answers questions. Private consults can be booked by calling Jason’s assistant,

The Saturday evening concert is a benefit to support the NSAI Los Angeles
Regional Workshop. It will be held at
the home of Alan & Debbie Nocita, 601 E. Orange Grove Ave., Sierra
Madre, CA 91024 . Prior to the concert, there will be an optional
wine-tasting. The admission is $15 for the concert only and $30 for the
concert plus wine-tasting. VIP tickets, which include special seating
and a cocktail party with the performers, are $75. A VIP table of 8 is
$400. Register in advance for both the seminar and the concert and
receive a $10 discount on the package.

Sunday, July 14, 3:00-6:00pm - Group Song Evaluations at Kulak’s
Woodshed. Giving and receiving critiques is one of the most valuable
ways to improve our craft and to test our songs for market-readiness. Bring
a song on CD or to play live, plus 15 copies of your lyric sheet.
Lyrics can also be critiqued.

Learn a systematic means of exploring and developing song ideas.
