DEALING WITH FEAR

by Seth Jackson

A fellow writer recently told me about a friend of his whoís so afraid of somebody stealing his songs that he never plays them for anyone. By doing this, he guarantees his songs wonít get stolen, but he also guarantees he will never make a dime or feel the satisfaction of applause from an audience. This is one example of how we can allow our fears to paralyze us.

Fear of rejection is common among songwriters. Do you let fear prevent you from making the call to a publisher or potential co-writer?

I once read a self-help book called ďFeel the Fear and Do It AnywayĒ. Simply keeping the title of that book in mind has helped me many times to push on when Iíve been on the verge of giving in to fear-based paralysis.

How we handle fear can mean the difference in whether or not we succeed in our songwriting careers. Fear can be an obstacle to overcome, and it can also be a motivator. Sometimes, Iím motivated to write when I start feeling afraid Iím not progressing enough.

Fear is an emotion that can protect us from danger. Some dangers are only imagined. Sometimes, we only need to realize that.
