Welcome to our third grade class at Big Creek Elementary! My personal goals for your child are to provide programs and an environment conducive to academic development and to help your child to become a more responsible citizen by helping him or her develop better organizational skills and good study habits. The goal for all students will be to work to their potential and to respect their classmates.
Our daily schedule begins at 8:00 a.m. Please help your child to be on time. We start our daily activities promptly at 8:00. Being late can disrupt your child's organization and ability to concentrate and complete assignments during the morning.
We have lunch during the fourth lunch period with seven other classes. We enter in two minute intervals beginning at 11:55. If you come to have lunch with your child, please meet us outside the lunchroom doors. The children exit the lunchroom and go directly to the playground for recess until 12:55. We will have a daily snack break at 9:20. Please send healthy snacks with your child. We are trying to teach children to make good food choices through out their lives. Let's begin with healthy snack foods.
We will have "special events" daily from 9:45 to 10:30. They are:
Monday: Computer Lab
Tuesday: Music with Mrs. Parris
Wednesday: Art with Mrs. Folsom
Thursday: P. E. with Ms. Baker
Friday: P.E. and Book Buddies 9:00 to 9:35
Book Buddies is a reading mentor program between Mrs. Denbow's kindergarten class and our class. Each third grade child is assigned a kindergarten "book buddy" with which to read and share books. We can't begin to describe what a wonderful program this is! Ask your child about his or her book buddy.
Mrs. Overton, our counselor, will make periodic presentations on self-esteem, problem solving, conflict resolution, and other appropriate topics periodically throughout the year. She's wonderful!!! Encourage your child to ask questions during this time. She is available for consultation with children or with parents. Please call her to make an appointment.
During our computer lab sessions I would like to use the "Friends of the Library" to help us. This is a new group and I believe we should support them to encourage their continued growth and support. I would also like to have some parent volunteers to help assist with students' learning skills. Twenty-five students to one teacher does not permit enough one-to-one time as I would like to have with each student. That's where you can make a difference. Thanks in advance to all who are willing and able to help!!
On most Tuesdays, your child will come home with his or her Weekly Folder graded work and other important information. Included is an S or N in conduct and an S or N in homework for the week. Please sign the information sheet signifying that you have seen it AND return the stapled graded work enclosed in the folder. Your child will receive a sticker for the folder, if everything is returned the next day. If you have any questions about your child's grades, please contact me. I can be reached at school by leaving a message on my voice mail (887-4584 ext. 252 and press the pound key) for me to return your call or by note/letter. Be assured I will make every effort to contact you as soon as possible.
The Homework Hotline is available to you daily. Call 887-4584 ext. 252 to get a recording of the assignments.
This should not be used as a substitute for the homework assignment notebook your child is using in class. I want to foster responsiblity in each child; therefore, he or she should not rely solely on the hotline for assignments. It's a "back-up" source for the student and an informational source for the parent.
Educationally,
