Descendants of Jacob, Dempsey,
Allen, David, and Thomas T. Hunter
This
site is devoted to the descendants of Jacob, Dempsey, Allen, David and Thomas
T. Hunter, who were all thought to be brothers or first cousins, and
descendants of William Hunter of Nansemond County, Virginia.
It is thought that they are descendants of Dempsey Hunter, son of Isaac
Hunter who died about 1745 in Northampton County, North Carolina. Isaac was
in turn the son of Nicholas Hunter, d. 1749, Cartaret County, North Carolina,
a son of William Hunter of Nansemond County, Virginia.
The origins of this family have been debated for over 60 years, and this site
does not try to solve this problem. It does however try to summarize all
information that has been accumulated by me on this family, with the hope
that it will help to finally solve this genealogical mystery. Please review
the recently transcribed Delamar Papers and Hutson Report that explore this issue more
fully.
What
is certain is that the first reference to our Hunters is in the will of
Gasper Faust who died in 1776 in Charleston County, South Carolina, who
refers to his son William living next to the "widow Hunter" on
Crane Creek, in the future Richland County.
Please send any comments, corrections, or additions you may to me by email be
