JACOB & ALLEN HUNTER TRUSTS MERGE
In the fall of 1993, the Allen Hunter Trust merged with the Jacob Hunter Trust. This allows for continued maintenance and upkeep of both cemeteries. With this merger, the Allen Hunter Trust disbanded and converted the resources under its management to the Jacob Hunter Trust.
Included in the transfer were two certificates of deposit (one in the amount of $4,047.82; the other, $4,275.85) that are each earning 3.5% interest. These funds were accumulated by Belva Hunter Hall and the Allen Hunter trustees from revenue from coal and oil on the Manual/Allen Hunter farm. The trust rules prohibit the spending of principle and provide that only the interest be spent on maintenance and upkeep. One CD matures in July 1994 and will earn $75.91; the other matures in September and will earn $104.83 in 1994. We plan to let the CDs earn interest until September, then add whatever is needed to buy a $10,000 Federal Treasury Bill or Note. If interest remains low next fall, we may leave the money in local banks paying higher interest until the interest on federal bills improves.
We owe a debt of gratitude to Judge Robert Hunter Howerton of Carterville for providing the legal work necessary for the trust merger. Further, we are indebted to Belva Hunter Hall, Florence and Charles Rodd, and the trustees of the Allen Hunter Cemetery for preserving the Cemetery and keeping the property in such good shape. Also, appreciation is extended to Bill D. Hill, an Allen Hunter Trustee, and his two sons, who spent one summer (in the early 1960s) clearing the Allen Hunter Cemetery so it could be fenced and maintained properly.
TRUST TO RECEIVE TAX EXEMPT STATUS
Judge Robert Hunter Howerton is presently completing the necessary paperwork to obtain tax-exempt status for the trust under Section 501(c)(13). This means that donations to the Jacob Hunter Trust can be used as a tax deduction for people meeting certain requirements. Donors to the Jacob Hunter Trust should check with their accountant or tax advisor to see if this will provide an attractive benefit. A special thanks to Robert H. Howerton for his work on our behalf.
1993 ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORT
The Trust received generous donations from 10 people during 1993. This enabled our checkbook balance to grow to $4,742.43 (see attached income and expense ledger). Our mowing and maintenance expenses for the Jacob Hunter Cemetery in 1993 amounted to $400. We plan to have the cemetery mowed more frequently in 1994 so it will look better. We would like to repair and replace some grave markers since many are broken and eroding to the point where names can no longer be detected. Minor repairs to the fence at the Allen Hunter Cemetery are also planned.
1994 BUDGET PLAN
Since taking over the Allen Hunter Cemetery, our expenses will increase substantially. Further, we plan to increase our mowing schedule to every 10 to 15 days throughout the mowing season. This will prevent weeds from seeding and will make it easier to see and protect the grave markers (many are barely visible above the ground). Projected expense estimates in 1994 include the following:
• Mowing Jacob Hunter Cemetery 20 times @ $30 ($600)
• Mowing Allen Hunter Cemetery 20 times @ $20 ($400)
• Mowing field around Allen Hunter Cemetery 2 times ($80)
• Maintenance contract on Jacob Hunter sign ($100)
• Fence repair at Allen Hunter Cemetery ($50)
• Spraying fences with RoundUp ($50)
• Replacing 4 markers at Jacob Hunter Cemetery ($1,000)
• Amount added to CDs to buy T-Bill/Note ($1,500)
TOTAL $3,780
In order to accomplish these improvements we will need continued support from interested relatives. If donations do not support this level of spending, we will cut back first on the $1,500 needed to invest in a Treasury Bill or Note, then reduce the number of markers to be replaced. Our priority for the trust is proper maintenance and upkeep of the cemeteries. We hope each of you are able to visit the two cemeteries and experience with pride the restorations that have been accomplished to date because of the donations of time and/or money to the Trusts.
JUSTICE PUBLICATIONS
We are again indebted to the very skilled (and busy) staff of Justice Publications, Inc., of Quincy, Illinois, and especially to its owner, Judge Robert S. Hunter, for designing, printing, and mailing this newsletter. Judge Hunter and his family, including his father, Clyde H. Hunter, have been instrumental in preserving our family histories for over 75 years. We are grateful that the present generation of "the Hunters of Quincy" are continuing this meaningful family tradition.
TO RICHARD HUNTER:
It is difficult to express my appreciation for what you have done for the family cemeteries. They were close to being lost forever, had it not been for your tireless efforts.
I hope that everyone who shares an interest will support you in every way possible.
The best way they can help, short of actual work with you, is to send their checks each year. In that way, they can help assure that the cemeteries will be there hundreds of years from now.
