Marilyn Fisher's Research

Marilyn L. Fisher of Thompson, Ohio wrote the Trust sharing recent research she compiled on the Moseley and Poor families. The text of her letter will be transcribed herein.

Elizabeth Hunter was a daughter of Manuel and Judith (Lee) Hunter. Judith Lee was a daughter of Braxton and Elizabeth (Hatcher) Lee. Braxton Lee was a son of Stephen and Ann (Poor) Lee. Ann Poor was a daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Moseley) Poor.

The new information I (Marilyn Fisher) have come across concerns the Moseley and Poor families.

Elizabeth Moseley, daughter of John Moseley and Mary Nichols, was born 14 July 1725 in Middlesex Co., VA. (Christ Church Parish Records-Pg. 117). By 1735 she was in Goochland Co., VA with her family. (Goochland Co. VA Deed Bk. 2, Pages 93-94). Elizabeth Moseley married Thomas Poor before 9 Oct 1744 (Goochland Co. VA Deed Bk. 4, 1741-1744 -Pages 433-434). Thomas Poor died 01 Feb 1788. (Douglas Register - Pg. 343). Elizabeth and Thomas had at least 6 children and possibly more. Thomas Poor's will was dated 09 Oct 1784.

Children mentioned in the will are:

Ann (Poor) Lee, b c 1745, Goochland Co. VA, m 03 Nov 1763 to Stephen Lee. (Douglas Register Pages 31 & 82) d c 1809 Pulaski Co. KY (Pulaski Co. KY Deed Book 3 Pages 55 & 56). (Page 116 of the Douglas Register lists the marriage of Ann's parents as 23 Dec 1756. Page 98 of the Douglas Register states that pages 98 through 123 were not registered by Rev. Douglas but were taken from the date of a child's birth. Ann's sister, Lucy, was born on 23 Dec 1756. I am convinced that the Deed of Gift from John Moseley to his ..."son in law Thomas Poor and my daughter Elizabeth Poor"... which was dated 09 Oct 1744 proves that Ann's parents were already married on that date).

Janney (Poor) Lambert

Lucy (Poor) Smith, b 23 Dec 1756, Goochland Co., VA (Douglas Register Pg 276).

Sarah (Poor) Britt William Poor, b 01 Nov 1765, Goochland Co. VA. (Douglas Register Pg. 276). Thomas Poor, b 12 Jul 1768, Goochland Co. VA. (Douglas Register Pg. 276).

John Moseley Sr. was married 10 Oct 1717 to Mary Nichols. (Christ Church Parish Register, Middlesex Co., VA -Pg 162). Mary was the daughter of John Nichols and Mary Lewis (Christ Church Parish Register - Pg. 23). John, Mary and the children were in Goochland Co., VA by 1735 when John purchased land on Little Bird Creek from John Lawson. (Deed Bk. 2, Pages. 93-94 made 06 Mar 1735). On 09 Oct 1744 John Moseley of Goochland Co., VA made a deed of gift to his daughter Ann Lee of 3 slaves; Ben, a woman named Frank and a girl named Sue. These three slaves are named in the Christ Church Parish register, as belonging to John Moseley. On the same day, Thomas Poor, Sr. also of Goochland Co., VA deeded "…200 acres to this son Thomas Poor, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth"... In May of 1747 John gave a deed of gift to his daughter Jenny and her husband John Haden of 4 slaves: Hannah, Bristow, Nan and Prince. Of these slaves, Bristow was the only one that came from Middlesex Co, VA. John Moseley died without a will before May 1754. (Goochland Co., VA Court Records, Bk. 7, Pg. 408, May, 1754) At that time Mary must have died as John's wife was Elizabeth.

John and Mary had four children all named in the Christ Church Parish Register of Middlesex Co., VA:

Sarah Moseley bpt 12 Oct 1718 Middlesex Co., VA (Pg. 100)

Jean/Jenny Moseley b 01 Oct 1722, Middlesex Co. VA (Pg. 111) m before May of 1747 to John Haden. (Deed of gift of slaves from father John Moseley)

Elizabeth Moseley b 14 July 1725, Middlesex Co, VA (Pg. 117) m before Oct 1744 to Thomas Poor. (Deed of gift of slaves from father John Moseley)

John Moseley, Jr. b 10 Mar 1727/8 Middlesex Co., VA (Pg. 123)

Marvel Mosely (Sr.) of Middlesex Co., VA m Sarah Blaise, daughter of William Blaise/Blase before 1682 (Will of William Blase of Middlesex Co., VA and Christ Church Parish Register of Middlesex Co., VA Pg. 19) Marvel died 13 Feb 1721 and was buried 15 Feb 1721 (Christ Church Parish Records Pg. 180). Sarah died 09 Oct 1716 and was buried 11 Oct 1716 (Christ Church Parish Register Pg. 172).

Marvel and Sarah had three children according to Marvel's will and the Christ Church Register:

Marvel Moseley, Jr. baptised 21 May 1682. He was married on 31 Aug 1704 to Aggatha Daniels (Christ Church Parish Register Pg. 19 & 63).

John Moseley married Mary Nichols on 10 Oct 1717 (Christ Church Parish Register Pg. 162).

Mary Moseley married William Daniel.

I (Marilyn L. Fisher) must credit Delores Rutherford because much of this information is from her research. She was kind enough to list her sources and I have been able to find most of them for myself. She is a most careful and thorough researcher.

I also have found some more information and a few mistakes on my Charles Brooke Lee, son of Charles Lee and Mary/ Polly Griffin and husband of Elizabeth Hunter. I would be happy to correspond with anyone about those families also.
