Funeral services for Harlan Hayes Hunter, 83, former city alderman, civic leader and founder of Hunter Furniture Co, who died Saturday at Montclair Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham, were today at 11 a.m. at Brown Service Funeral Home, Ralph Stout officiating, with burial in Decatur Cemetery, Brown directing.

Mr. Hunter, who bought out a partnership in Schimmel and Hunter Furniture Co in 1928 to found Hunter Furniture Co. was also one of the founders of Valley Stock Yard and Decatur Plastics Co.

Born in Columbia, Tenn in 1889, where he went to work for Cook Brothers Morgan Furniture at the age of 17, he moved to Decatur in 1910 with the store and shortly thereafter was employed with Schimmel as store manager. In 1918, he became a partner in Schimmel and Hunter Furniture Co at 109 2nd Avenue.

Mr. Hunter was a city alderman from 1936-1948, a director of Alabama Retail Furniture Dealers Association, and a member of Kiwanis Club and the Masonic Lodge.

A member of Grant St. Church of Christ, he developed the Tanner 1 section of homes known as Hunter Addition.

During World War I, he served in the Home Guard.

Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Jane Pirie Hunter, Tanner; a daughter, Jean Neal, Nashville; three sons, Robert T. Hunter, Decatur; Harlan H. Hunter Jr, San Antonio, Texas; Gilbert R. Hunter, Selma; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Underwood, Columbia, Tenn; five brothers, Grady Hunter, Warrior; Webb Hunter, Decatur; Allie Hunter, Hayes Hunter, both of Columbia; Willis Hunter, Lawrenceburg, Tenn; nine grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

He was married to Amy Lamar on 19 Apr 1911 in Maury County, Tennessee. Harlan Hayes Hunter and Amy Lamar had the following children:

He was married to Mabel Elise Cook on 3 Dec 1934. Mabel Elise Cook was born on 15 Feb 1897. She died on 2 Feb 1983 in Tarrant County, Texas. ⁽¹⁵⁹⁸⁾ Harlan Hayes Hunter and Mabel Elise Cook had the following children:

He was married to Jane Pirie on 11 Jul 1945. Jane Pirie was born on 11 Aug 1908. She died on 10 Aug 1987 in Decatur, Morgan County, Alabama. She was buried in Decatur City Cemetery, Decatur, Morgan County, Alabama.
