SPRINGERTON LADY

Mrs. Elizabeth Hunter Answers Final Call, Closing Long And Useful Life

Elizabeth Carter was born January 1st, 1848 on the farm known as the White farm, one mile north of Springerton. She died March 18th, 1916, aged 68 years, 2 months and 18 days. She was the daughter of Miles and Emily Carter, one of the pioneer families of this county, who figured conspicuously in the early development of the church and school and social life which we live to enjoy today. There were six brothers and sisters and eight half brothers and sisters, all of whom with the exception of two brothers have preceded the deceased to the world beyond.

She was married in the summer of 1868 to Aaron M. Hunter near Duquoin, Illinois. To this union was born six children, only two of whom are living Ito mourn the loss of their mother; Laura A. Jones, the oldest child died at Eureka, Kansas, in the, fall of 1895, Charles died in Eureka, Kansas, just as he was entering young manhood in December, 1894. Lewis died in Springerton, while an infant of one year. Otto the-youngest child whom so many of us here knew to love and respect, was killed while discharging his duties as agent in the railroad omce of Midland, South Dakota. The two remaining children are Mrs. Della Hammock, cashier of the Springerton bank and Mrs. Freda McGovern of Chicago, both of whom are here to pay their last tribute of love and respect to their mother. Her husband departed this life in May, 1895, leaving Mrs. Hunter with the care of three of their children just at the tender age when she needed the counsel and advice of her husband most. She assumed this responsibility with great courage and Christian fortitude and nobly discharged her every duty. Truly her children "can arise and call her blessed" for she path done what she could. To her husband she, remained the loving, faithful wife until God called her to unite with him in the better world. Soon after her marriage she and her husband located in Springerton where they resided until 1879, when they moved to Eldorado, Kansas, where for a number of years Mr. Hunter enjoyed a very large and lucrative law practice. The deceased entering into his every activity with great zeal and interest and was known to have been able to be admitted to the bar at the same time with her husband, having acted as his quiz master while he was pursuing his studies. In the year 1895 the health of her husband being broken, they returned to Springerton that his last days might be spent nearer their relatives and earlier friends. A few years ago, Mrs. Hunter again proved her native courage and pluck by going to South Dakota where she found isolation and loneliness of life improving upon a government claims. The deceased professed faith in Christ as her Savior, uniting with the Missionary Baptist church at Beaver creek, while living in Kansas. While pioneer life in proving upon a government claim. She professed faith in Creek. While living in Kansas she and her family were members of the Christian church. After returning to Springerton she placed her membership in the Methodist Episcopal church and has been a useful and consistent member of this church ever since. She has lived a modest, quiet and unassuming life, full of kindness and love to all who knew her. Always unselfish, ever exemplifying the life of her Master, ministering unto others rather than being ministered unto.

Besides her two slaughters she leaves two brothers and 11 grandchildren who are sadly bereft of the love of their mother, sister and grandmother. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. O. E. Brown, her pastor, assisted by Rev. Charles Merritt of Fairfield.
