MILITARY RITES HELD HERE FOR WAC CORPORAL

Body of Mrs. Ruth Hunter McManus, Who Died at El Paso, Brought Here for Burial Monday Afternoon.

Funeral services, with full military rites, were held at 2:30 Monday afternoon at the chapel of Barrow-Sheppard Funeral home for WAC Corporal, Mrs. Ruth Hunter McManus, 47, with Rev. R. L. Butler, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating, assisted by Minister Troy Cummings of the Church of Christ.

The remains of Mrs. McManus, who died Friday at William Beaumont General hospital, El Paso, where she had been a patient most of the time since September of last year, arrived here on the eastbound Sunshine Special Sunday morning, with her husband, T-Sgt. McManus, as escort, and was met by an honor guard from Merkel Post 5683, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Burial was in the Rose Hill cemetery under direction of the Merkel VFW Post. Body bearers were Harold Reynolds, Howard Carson, Horace Boney, Ralph Tarpley, Leon Walker, Waymon Adcock; honorary pallbearers, Doyle Selfried, Lester Derton, Vernon Mansfield, L. A. Dudley, Murray Toombs, R. D. Ely, Lloyd Robertson and David Gamble.

The escort, or firing squad, included Powell Miller, Alston Newton, Jesus Moreno, Vincent Barnett, George Reidenbach, Robert Higgins, Marvin DuBose; color guards, E. L. Tarpley, Marvin Perkins; color bearers, Glynn Robertson, J. P. Click; bugler, Forrest Glenn Barnett; chaplain, rev. R. L. Butler; assistant chaplain, Minister Troy M. Cummings.

Born Ruth T. Hunter, on July 17, 1900, daughter of Mrs. J. H. Hunter, now of Midland, and the late Mr. Hunter, Corporal McManus was reared in Merkel. She enlisted in the Woman's Army Corps in 1944 and was on duty most of the time at Camp Berkeley.

Survivors include her husband, T-Sgt. John B. McManus, stationed at William Beaumont General Hospital, El Paso, to whom she was married in November, 1946; her mother; two children by a former marriage, Mrs. W. L. Russell, Merkel, and Roy R. Coats, Jr., Chicago, Ill., and 5 grandchildren.

Four brothers and three sisters also survive. The brothers are: Emmett Hunter, Alpine, and W. L. Hunter, J. J. Hunter, and James Hunter, all of Midland; three sisters, Mrs. Otto Kappleman, South San Antonio, Mrs. Ellsworth Bell, Trent, and Mrs. Grady Baldwin, Fort Worth.




She was married to Roy Robert Coats Sr. (son of Elisha Dee Coats and Alice Gertrude Tucker) on 13 Jun 1920 in Eastland County, Texas.(1068) Roy Robert Coats Sr. was born on 6 Aug 1898 in Merkel, Taylor County, Texas. He appeared on the census on 19 Apr 1930 in Albany, Shackelford County, Texas.(1638) He died on 30 Nov 1970 in Morencini, Arizona. He was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Merkel, Taylor County, Texas.(1639) Theresa Ruth Hunter and Roy Robert Coats Sr. had the following children:
