Corp. Hunter Home From Okinawa
Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Hunter, 3001 Lake Drive, left Monday for San Antonio to meet
their son, Corp. John Leslie Hunter, due to arrive Tuesday from San Francisco.
Corp. Hunter arrived Friday in San Francisco from Okinawa and will spend a 30-day
furlough with his family here and with friends in Alpine and Midland before returning
to San Antonio for reassignment.
Corp. Hunter, raised and educated in Alpine, completed big school in Midland
in 1949 and, on Sept. 3, 1949, he enlisted in the Army at San Diego. His family
resided in Alpine at that time, moving here after Mr. Hunter retired.
Assigned to Camp Stoneman, San Francisco, Corp. Hunter was attached to the 65th
AAA and went to Okinawa, sailing from San Francisco on Jan. 18, 1950.
On outbreak of the war in Korea, Comp. Hunter was the first in his unit to volunteer
for active service there, but his request was rejected because of his essential
status as a radar technician. He has been on 24-hour call duty at his Okinawa
post until his turn at rotation came.
Besides his parents, other relatives residing here are a sister, Mrs. Arliene
Brown; and niece, Miss Leslie Harris; both of 3001 Lake Drive; and a brother,
Eugene Hunter, operator of Perry Courts, 230 West 29th St.

John L. Hunter dead at age 44
John L. Hunter, 44, a former Midland policeman, was found dead this morning on
a farm 22 miles northwest of Garden City on FM 137.
Hunter apparently had been loading a tank truck of crude oil when he apparently
collapsed and died about 9:10 p.m. Monday. He was an employee of Miller Oil Purchasing
Co.
Glasscock County Peace Justice John Robinson said this morning no ruling had
been made, but an autopsy likely would be performed to determine whether cause
of death was a heart attack or inhalation of gas fumes.
Hunter, who lived at 3513 Thomas St., had moved to Midland in 1952. He had worked
for the Midland Police Department approximately 15 years before being employed
by Miller Oil.
A Presidio native, he was born May 7, 1931, and reared at Presidio and Alpine.
Surviving are his widow, Gwen Hunter of Midland; two daughters, Carma Hunter
and Suleah Hunter, both of the home; his mother, Mrs. Manila Hunter of Midland;
a brother, Eugene Hunter of Midland; a sister, Arliene Reeves of Midland, and
a niece and nephew.
He was married to Gwendolyn Mercer (daughter of Alvin
Monroe Mercer and Norabel Anthony) on 21 Apr 1953 in Midland,
