CARBONDALE - Robert J. Chamness, 76, passed away at 6 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2008, with his family at his bedside.

He was born Aug. 25, 1931, in Marion, to Lee and Esther (Hunter) Chamness.

He married Bonnie Fae Holder. She died May 24, 2004.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, James and Sheila of Murphysboro; son, Mark of Carbondale; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Michael Shadowens of Energy; daughter, Kim Rogers of Carbondale; six grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; six great-stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Ben and Sam; and beloved in-laws, Patsy and Chuck Cremeens of Carbondale and Delvin and Darlene Holder of Chester.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.

Robert was a custodian at Union Hill Christian Church.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today in Union Hill Christian Church, with the Rev. Gerald Holmes officiating. Burial, with military graveside rites, will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park.
