JACOB HUNTER

JACOB HUNTER was born about 1755, probably in North Carolina. The first record of him is on October 30, 1775, when he joined a petition to form a Volunteer Company under Captain Andrew Cummings, in Orangeburg District, South Carolina. On July 6, 1777, he enlisted in the Third South Carolina Regiment, Commanded by Col. William Thompson.

No more of his Revolutionary record is known, but on November 30, 1784, he received warrant #2228 for Revolutionary War service. On september 5, 1785, he purchased 640 acres on the Savannah Creek, Orangeburg District, from the state of South Carolina for 14 pounds 18 shillings. This land is now located on the southwestern section of Columbia (SC) Metropolitan Airport. The creek is now called "Savana" Creek.

About 1786 he married Mary "Polly" Dancer, daughter of Peter Dancer. Their first child, Emanuel Hunter, was born in the Richland or Orangeburg District in South Carolina.

In 1790, Jacob appeared on the 1790 Federal Census for the Richland District of South Carolina, with one male over sixteen (himself), two under 16, and two females (his wife and daughter). He was located near Dempsey Hunter, who had located on Crane Creek. Because the deed records of Richland or Orangeburg have been destroyed, it is unknown if Jacob had sold his original land and bought more in Richland.

By 1798, however, he had moved to Robertson County, Tennessee, where he purchased 220 acres on the Cumberland River and land on both sides of Sycamore Creek from Robert Weakley. In April, 1800 he and Thomas Hunter were ordered by the Robertson county Court to lay out a road. In July 1801, he served on a jury in the same County.

However, late in 1806 Jacob was dead. His estate was inventoried in January 1807, in Davidson County, and sold on February 10, 1807, for a total of $1,197.50. His wife Polly, and friend Braxton Lee were his Administrators. See "estate.hunter.jacob.html".

In August, 1807, Jacob's Revolutionary War warrant for land was granted on 600 acres in Rutherford County, Tennessee. This was formally deeded to his estate on July 1, 1809. The estate itself was divided in the amount of $161.89 per family member, including six children, on September 19, 1811.

In the meantime, Polly remarried to Braxton Lee, on May 20, 1808, the same day Braxton's daughter Judith married Polly's son Manuel Hunter. Braxton died in 1841 in Davidson County, Tennessee, but the date of Polly's death is not known.

On Sept. 1, 1825 the heirs of Jacob Hunter, deceased, sold property in Davidson Co. These heirs are listed as Manuel Hunter, Isaac Hunter, Matthew Hunter Thomas Fulin [Freeland] and Elizabeth, his wife and Timothy Duratt and Sally, his wife. These could be five of the six children mentioned in the division in 1811. The other child may have died before this sale.

He was married to Mary "Polly" Dancer (daughter of Peter Dancer) about 1786 in Richland County, South Carolina. Mary "Polly" Dancer was born in 1770. She died 1842 to 1850 in Davidson County, Tennessee.
Polly married second, Braxton Lee in 1808 in Davidson County, Tennessee, and third, Isaac Weakley, in 1842 in Davidson County, Tennessee. She died between 1842 and 1850.

The latest information on the maiden name of Mary/Polly, the wife of Jacob Hunter, is she was a Dancer, a daughter of Peter Dancer of Richland County, South Carolina. Bertie Dancer's e-mail below best summarizes the connection:

I think it is interesting that the families of Dancer, Faust, Hunter, Barth/Beard, Cranmer and others were all on Crain/Crane Creek in SC and that the Hunters and Dancers evidently traveled to TN at about the same time. Henry Dancer was listed as an appraisor of the estate of William Faust in 1797. We believe the Dancers arrived in TN shortly after that business was taken care of.

Since Jonas Dancer Sr. gave gifts to the children, 1802 - now born, of Henry Dancer. He gave to Jonas Jr. son of John Dancer of SC; to Thomas Shoote son of Jesse(e) Shoote/Shute of SC, and to Manuel Hunter, son of Jacob Hunter of TN.

We know for a fact that Henry Dancer and John Dancer were brothers and Jonas was another brother. Peter Dancer Jr of SC died before the 1790 census of Richland Co.

We believe the wife of Jacob Hunter was Mary Polly Dancer and that the wife of Jesse Shoote of SC was another Dancer daughter. There is indication of a third daughter. She m Gotterby Shutts in Richland Co. I do not feel as strongly about the Shutts connection
as I do the Shoote and Hunter connections.

Have you read the transcriptions of the Smith Co, TN Deeds of Gift? What do you think?

Daniel Burford, witness of the deeds was a Baptist preacher in Smith Co.

In 1828 [I think] Manuel Hunter was executor in the estate of Ulrich Dancer in Davidson Co, TN. We are not sure who this Ulrich was but he may have been son of Ulrich Dancer of Wilkinson Co, MS. We believe Ulrich was son of John of SC. He was b in 1791. We
have no further information on Ulrich of Davidson Co. Evidence seems to indicate that John Dancer was married to a Beard. I believe he had more than one wife.

I can hardly wait to hear from you.

From the Jacob Hunter Trust newsletter, Volume 9, Number 1, January 2000:

Mary (Polly) Boone or Dancer?

Recent research by Bertie B. Dancer of Fort Worth, TX reveals that Mary (Polly) Hunter may have been a Dancer rather than a Boone. It has been reported for years that Jacob Hunter (b. 1755 d. 1806) married Mary (Polly) Boone. This has not been proven however, and some report that her being a Boone was merely speculation. According to Lawrence Lee Hunter, Boone family records indicate that Mary (Polly) Boone would have been a generation back (or older) than the Mary (Polly) that was the wife of our Jacob Hunter. Mrs. Dancer located court records from Smith County Tennessee where a Jonas Dancer was allocating his estate to his nephews wherein it is stated:

Know all Men that I Jonas Dancer of Smith County State of Tennefsee in Consideration of the affection I have for thomas Shoote son of Jessee Shoote of South Carolina also Manuel hunter son of Jacob hunter of Tennefsee Do give to them Jointly (that is to say to thomas Shoote & Manuel hunter the ballance Due Me from after Discharging the gift mad to Jonas Dancer of South Carolina to them and their heirs forever In Witnefs I have set My hand & Seal this 29 Day of Oct - - 1802

Jonas Dancer was a brother to Mrs. Jacob Hunter (Polly) and to Mrs. Jesse Shoote, mother of Thomas Shoote named in the Smith County TN Deed Book according to Mrs. Bertie Dancer. Mrs. Dancer also reported that Manuel Hunter (first son of Jacob and Mary (Polly) Hunter was an executor for Ulrich Dancer in 1826.

Upon learning of Bertie Dancer's research, Lawrence Lee Hunter stated that he always had some doubts about Polly being a Boone. Lawrence said the dates just did not fit. Also, Lawrence said he remembered his grandfather L. Z. Hunter telling him that "Polly was a Dancer." Lawrence said "until now I always thought he meant she liked to dance."

Jacob Hunter and Mary "Polly" Dancer had the following children:

child+17 i. Emanuel Hunter.
child18 ii. Son Hunter was born in 1789 in Richland County, South Carolina. He died before 1825.

The 1811 division of Jacob Hunter's estate lists 6 children; the 1825 division shows only 6. The 1790 census shows 2 sons under 16, so I have listed this child as a son born before 1790. Name of this child is unknown.

child+19 iii. Elizabeth Hunter.
child+20 iv. Isaac F. Hunter.
child+21 v. Sarah "Sally" Hunter.
child+22 vi. Matthew Ryburn Hunter.
