Abridged from the Hunter family of Williamson County, Illinois, by Lawrence
and Lettie Hunter:
Manual Hunter, eldest son of Jacob Hunter and Mary (Polly) Dancer, was born
September 17, 1787 in South Carolina. He and his family moved to Robertson
(now Cheatham) County, Tennessee about 1793. They lived on the north side of
the Cumberland River, on Sycamore Creek.
Manual married Judith Lee, daughter of Braxton Lee and Elizabeth Hatcher, on
May 20, 1808, in Davidson County, Tennessee. On the same day, Manual's
widowed mother married Judith's father, also a widower.
In the War of 1812, Manual served in Captain abraham Allen's Company, First
Regiment (Napiers), West Tennessee militia, from Montgomery County, and was
honorably discharged May 26, 1814. This company was under Gerneal Andrew jackson,
its principal engagements being against the Creek indians. He re-enlisted
June 17, 1814 as an ensign in the 23rd Regiment from Robertson County. He
later received a federal pension for his service in this war.
In 1824, he, his wife and three sons, the seven Sanders brothers, three
Moakes, Roderick Reed and Wilse Gower, with their families comprised a wagon
train that came to Williamson (then Franklin) County, Illinois. Manuel
entered land in 1829 in lake Creek Township. The father of Dr. Ben Felts of
Tennessee lived with Manuel until he completed his home. Apparently the
Hunter home still stands in Williamson County, Illinois.
During the Black hawk War, Manuel served as a corporal in Captain Armistead
Holman's Company of Illinois Monted Volunteers against the Sac and Fox
Indians; enrolled June 15, 1832, and was discharged October 17, 1832. This
Company was in Abraham Lincoln's regiment.
Manuel's wife, Judith died in 1852, and later that year he married the widow
Mary Bess, by whom he had two daughters. He died in 1874 in Williamson
County, Illinois.
