Sunday, April 15 Trail clearing has been RESCHEDULED to Saturday, April 21.
Due to torrential rain on Sunday, April 15, Trail clearing has been rescheduled to Saturday, April 21.
Saturday, May 12, 2007 hike is CHANGED.
We will be unable to do the scheduled hike over Sugarloaf Mountain. We contacted the NY DEC and received the following report on trail conditions:
The trails over most of
the Catskill peaks have been closed temporarily by the NY DEC.
The recent nor'easter caused severe damage to most of the trails
in the Catskills. The lower elevations have extensive small branches
on the trails. Higher up there are extensive tree tops broken
off and blocking trails. Near the peaks the blowdowns are frozen
in several feet of snow and ice. Many of the trees which carry
the blazes are blown down, so the trails are now poorly marked.
For these reasons we will change our hike location and route on
Saturday to be local to the Harriman RR Station.
We will shuttle to the commuter parking lot at the intersection
of Route 17 and 17A. Then hike up the Wildcat trail to the Southfields
Furnace, then the Furnace Loop trail to Indian Hill, then cross
the AT and proceed back to the Harriman RR Station via the Sapphire
trail. This route is about 7.2 miles.
We will meet and begin at the Harriman RR Station at the scheduled
time of 8:00 AM. With the early start, we expect to be back to
our cars before 2:00 PM.
