Lake Kanawauke Parking, Route 106, Harriman State Park, NY 10974

From Suffern @ I-287 & I-87N Exit 15A: Take Route17 north 4½ miles to Seven Lakes Dive, just north of Sloatsburg, NY. Turn right onto Seven Lakes Drive for 6½ miles to Kanawauke Circle and Route106. Go west (left) on Route106, ¼ mile to parking lot for boat launch on the left.

Note: A $20 seasonal permit is required to paddle on all but two of the lakes in Harriman. From Sebago Boat Launch, drive north 6 miles. to the Ranger Station on the circle at Lake Tiorati to buy your permit, which is valid from April 1 to Nov. 30, 2006. Have your life jackets available for ranger inspection. (Allow sufficent time for permit purchase.)

Ramapo Valley County Reservation

Moderate. An 8-mile hike on the Schuber trail to a lookout for lunch & back on the Yellow/Silver trail.

Ramapo Mountain County Reservation, Route 202, Mahwah, New Jersey 07430

From Route17: At Mahwah, NJ take Route 202 south (approx 1.8 miles) to Ramapo Mountain County Reservation entrance on right side of road.
From I-287 Exit 58 in Oakland, NJ: Take Route 202 north about 4.8 miles to Rampo Mountain County Park on left. No left turns allowed here! So continue north about 1 block and make U-turn and come back to parking lot entrance.

Bonticou Crag, Shawangunks

Moderate or moderately strenuous. The approach of the Crag uses a combination of shale roads and paths. The final assent can be made via the easy "Back Way" or via a short climb "Straight up the Cliff". On a clear day the broad summit offers views from the Catskills to the Hudson Highlands. An optional hike to Table Rocks is available for additional views. We should have time to stop at the nearby Apple Orchards and perhaps have an early supper in the area. The hike starts at the Spring Farm Parking Area in the Mohonk Preserve and there is a Hiking Fee $$.

From the South: (From Suffern @ I-287 & I-87N Interchange exit 15A:) Take Route17 north 15 Miles. The Commuter lot is on the northbound side of Route 17.
From the North: NYS Thruway Exit 16: Proceed south on Route 17 about 2 miles to Commuter lot on the left.

Canoe Merrill Creek Reservoir

An easy paddle around a nice reservoir above the Delaware River. Perhaps we may see the Eagle again.

Boat Launch, Merrill Creak Reservoir, Merrill Creek Road, Phillipsburg, NJ 08865

From I-78 west Exit 4: Turn right at the end of the ramp. Drive 1.8 miles to the center of Stewartville. At the blinking light, turn right on Stewartville Road and go 2.7 miles to Route 57 in New Village. Cross Route 57 diagonally, turning left onto Montana Road which goes uphill for 2 miles. Left on Richline Road and drive 0.3 miles, turning left again, onto Merrill Creek Road. Follow signs to the Boat Launch.

IHC Trail Clearing on Schunemunk Mountain

Moderately strenuous. The club maintains this section of the Long Path, as well as the Lower Jessup Trail. Please come and help us maintain these trails! Bring your lunch, water, clippers and good working gloves. If you do not have clippers you can use the tools provided by the club. Rain cancels and reschedules to Saturday October 25, 2008.

From I-87 Exit 16 (Harriman/Woodbury Commons): After toll booths stay to right for first exit, Woodbury. Turn right at end of ramp for Route 32 North. Take Route 32 north past Woodbury Commons approximately 7 miles to Pleasant Hill Road, (Black Rock Fish & Game Club sign on left), Mountainville, NY. Turn left go to first road turn left again, (Taylor Road) proceed to parking lot on right side of road after crossing over NYS Thruway.
From Route 17: Travel north on Route 17 to Route 32 in Woodbury, New York, no turns here. Take Route 32 north past Woodbury Commons approx. 7 miles to Pleasant Hill Road (Black Rock Fish & Game Club sign on left), Mountainville, NY. Turn left go to first road turn left again (Taylor Road) proceed to parking lot on right side of road after crossing over NYS Thruway.

Breakneck Ridge & Taurus

Strenuous. In the Hudson Highlands State Park, east of the Hudson River, are two striking peaks rising above the river. We shall climb both, enjoy the breathtaking views and perhaps find out why the bull broke his neck. Bring your camera and take some gorgeous pictures. The views of the Hudson River and Valley are spectacular at this time of the year.

From the south: Exit 17 on Palisades Interstate Parkway. 15 miles north of NYS Thruway, just beyond Visitors Center in middle island.
From the north: Exit 17 on Palisades Interstate Parkway. The parking area is 0.5 miles south of the Route 6 and Seven Lakes Drive intersection.
