Most of you probably aren't that interested in my education, but I spent considerable
time, effort, money (my parents' as well as my own), sanity (mine, my wife's, my family's,
my advisor's . . .) in getting it, so here it is.
- PhD (ABD) - The Pennsylvania State University
Dissertation title: After Troilus: Translation, Interpretation, and Medieval
Poetics in Chaucer's Later Works
I really liked my dissertation topic, but the sad fact is that there just aren't that many
jobs teaching medieval literature. I still love the literature; I just can't justify
killing myself to finish the dissertation when the best I could do is scut work teaching
composition at some community college (and that's if I'm lucky). Or, as one wag put it,
"I though I wanted a career; turns out I just wanted a decent
paycheck."
