A new bluejay family

A bluejay is nesting there this year.

Last spring, we cut the side of the old house open

To add a bay window.

The dogwoods flowered into the room;

They were a delight for the carpenter's crew.

Mid the noise of the new window, the birds did not nest.

The little grove of dogwoods, very old now,

Has always belonged to a family of bluejays.

For generations, they passed the grove along.

We all knew each other, the bluejay family and ours.

They complained about the new cat; our old one was

Indifferent, just dreaming as he watched them.

A new bluejay family has come, not some of the old.

Although, I could not explain the difference.

Perhaps, we will wait until fall to repaint.
