Dark Ages

I stopped in a foreign land
a land that time forgot
a land that practiced things now forgotten

all worked together for the common good
each had a place in the group
each performed a function with the group

all spoke the same exquisitely useless language
all defended each idea after it had been
approved by the annointed ones
individuals and thinkers were outcast

group thought
group work
group cooperation
group excellence

I stopped in a place that was
near madness
near despair
near death
leaderless
thoughtless

I stopped in a monastery as close to the middle
ages as it is possible to come
and
I thought never to revisit that mindset again
until
I stopped in public education for a while.
