Cape Verde
today

Descendants of the Portuguese Christaos Novos and the Moroccan-Jewish Cape Verdeans founded the Cape Verde-Israel Friendship Society in 1995 in order to revitalize Jewish life in the islands. In August Jay plans to journey to the islands and visit the Cape Verde-Israel Friendship society to explore the lives of today’s Jewish Cape Verdeans. Jay will try to convey the Cape Verdean Jewish community’s difficult past by photographing the Jewish cemeteries of Praia, Santiago, where the pinkish Jewish graves lie in a row amidst barren earth, the Penha Franaa cemetery of Santo Antao, which is located on the precipice of a mountain near Ribiera Grande on an arid stretch of black volcanic sand, the Jewish cemetery of Ponta do Sol in Santo Antao, which is surrounded by yellow plastered volcanic walls, and the deteriorating cemetery of Boa Vista, which is on a sandy piece of land surrounded by an ash adobe wall and an unhinged gate.
