The Food

A typical Ugandan breakfast consists of whole wheat flatbread called chapati, the recipe for which is below, and a mug of boiled, whole milk, often fresh from the cow. The chapati are large and round and usually one chapat can satisfy someone. The diner folds the chapat and cuts it with a knife and fork into small before eating it.

Recipe for Chapati
2 kilos of wheat flour
2 mugs full of water
pinch salt

Add salt to water, then add flour and mix. Knead until smooth, then roll with a rolling pin until thin. Cook in sunflower oil until slightly brown.

Makes about 12 large chapati
