March 8, 1996

This is a copy of a memoir written by William Brock
Judkins who served in Company G, 22nd Regiment, Georgia Volunteer
Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia, Confederate States of
America. The unit was made up of volunteers from Bartow and Floyd
Counties, Georgia, and was named the "Fireside Defenders". An old
copy of the memoir was found in a safe at the Carnegie Library in
Rome, Georgia. The memoir had been collected by the Rome, Georgia
and Nathan Bedford Forrest Chapters of the United Daughters of
the Confederacy. I have not been able to find where the original
is, or if it still exists.

There is a bound reproduction of this memoir in the Special
Collections Room at the Sara Hightower Regional Library in Rome,
Georgia, a microfilm copy in Drawer #65, Box #54 at the
Georgia Department of Archives and Records in Atlanta, Georgia,
and a copy in the archives of The United States Army Military History
Institute.

Although the memoir is not dated, on page 82 Judkins writes
"...as this is 1907..." and if in fact this is when it was
written, he would have been 66 or 67 years old. The Sara
Hightower Regional Library copy contains a provenance from Tom
Weesner via Russell McClanahan dated September, 1995, which has
his birth date as July 1, 1840.

In retyping this memoir I kept the original spelling, grammar,
and page spacing. In a few places I did insert spaces to make the
memoir easier to read.

I would like to thank Phil Leigh of Tampa, Florida whose great
great grandfather, James Gilbert Leigh, served in Company G, for
bringing this memoir to my attention.
