Yep. They're all here. Sometimes, they go into the secret forums on JS and talk about you.

Okay, it's clear that the entire fucking city has gone nuts, so there's only one thing to do.

You know how sometimes when you're playing a computer game it's just not going to suit you, and you end up having to reset and start over? That happens to me sometimes with Jasper, so I'm resetting the city. After it reboots, maybe things will be better.

The way you do that is go somewhere at least potentially more interesting and fun. We've done Vegas and L.A. and we just got back from Ft. Lauderdale, so the next destination is clear.

We're going to the Cooter Festival. That's right. Some of you think the Marble Festival is a big draw, but right here is where we missed the boat if we really wanted to bring in the tourists. A lot of people still think we have some sort of marble tournament and play marbles like little kids during the Marble Festival. Sadly, the truth about what we promote is even less interesting than that. However, if we'd thought of having a Cooter Festival instead, nobody would complain. Word of mouth advertising would pretty much take care of bringing in the crowds.

I'll see y'all later, assuming of course I don't get to having a big time and just decide to never come back.

Apparently, I forgot to circle April 7th on my calendar, because it's Sanctimonious Prig Day and here I am, surrounded all of a sudden.

Yeah, today is different, FHL. Uncle Jeff is pissed off. It's not just because it's time to write a check to Uncle Sugar so folks can keep getting "Earned Income Credit", which is a crafty means of income redistribution. It's welfare, is what it is, but that's a topic for another day.

I categorically deny mainlining God's Name. It has not entered or otherwise been taken into any of my veins, nor have I been an accessory before or after the fact in the act of it entering anybody else's veins, either, so that's that. Further, I deny exhibiting any fruity-ness. Not Guilty.

If you really can't see how I'm any different than the person who wrote the "she did it to herself" message, then I'd suggest you re-read them. I'm the one saying let's have a little bit of compassion here. A little bit of human decency would be nice right about now, that's my message. When I was essentially told that I didn't have the right to demand a little bit of poise, I disagreed. Strongly. And I still disagree.

Furthermore, I deny saying GD. I haven't said GD since I was living at home, at least not that I recall.

How can I claim to be a man of hope? I didn't. I'm not sure I've claimed to be anything. How you claim a right to judge me, regardless? And why don't you like the caption from Luke? You should check out the seventh chapter of Matthew while you're at it, but you won't like it, either. It's not exactly a Real Christian® sentiment, but there's been no success in removing it from the Bible.

And what's a hippocrit? Are you trying to say hypocrite? That's a person who professes beliefs he/she doesn't hold, if that's what you meant. If it is what you were trying to say, back that up. Show me one instance and I'll repent. But don't start on me for professing Christianity and holding different beliefs, because I'm not a Christian and as far as I know I haven't claimed to be in the four years JS has been online.

If you're asking what sort of man hopes for the best but occasionally uses the vernacular term, "goddamn", I'd say an honest but disappointed one. I'm bitterly disappointed with a lot of different things and the way things have turned out for a lot of different people. In a lot of cases, yes, it's a goddamn shame. Deny that, and you deny consensus reality, the sort that most of us are experiencing here in the really-real world, on the third planet from the unsmiling sun. Just because we find different ways to say it doesn't mean it isn't so.

This is the last time I'm going to wade into the miasma of anybody's inability to compose English, too. Either make sense, or go away. I heard the Pravda board doesn't have enough idiots, maybe that will work out for you.

Hey Jeff...how can you claim to be a man of hope when you said GD? Just what kind of man are you who would damn the God of our world who would create a miracle or to take a life? I would call someone like you a HIPPOCRIT!!! Because on the face of this website of yours has a caption from the book of Luke in remembrance and prayer for Sun Ann Ray...and on the other side you want to say GD. Well, that doesn't say much for you or you character as a person.

Jeff,

I've logged onto this website several times and seen some pretty funny stuff, but today is different.

You are claiming to have faith and hope for Billie Jean, but I've read where you have used God's name in vein in a conversation where you are obviously very angry with this person who is speaking negatively of what BJ has done. How are you any different than this other person? You claim to have hope and faith but you exhibit no fruit. You are as negative as the person who sent the "she did it to herself" message.

Why would you put a Biblical verse on the left hand side of your screen for the prayers for the family of SueAnn Ray and use God's name in vein on the right hand side?

No, "selfish" is a sanctimonious asshole who without any regard for the feelings of the people who knew and loved somebody who was in this predicament starts spewing a bunch of Dr. Phil/Oprah psychobabble about something said asshole knows nothing directly about, like you just did.

There is such a thing as righteous anger, too, of the sort you've provoked in anybody remotely human who happens to be reading your drivel.

I'm sure you don't have any sympathy for anybody. A mature person would recognize that passing petty judgement upon somebody in her position adds nothing to the discussion and just infuriates everybody. You haven't even tried to establish from what vantage point you're judging or what your right is to judge anybody.

It is the height of both irony and arrogance for you to say someone doesn't have the right to do something destructive, for no point other than to gain attention, and without any thought for others at all, because you just did it, and called me a liar in the bargain. What did you think I was going to say? How did you think I was going to react? Oh, that's right, you don't care about anybody but yourself...that sort of makes everything you said look like you were projecting, doesn't it?

Hey buddy...sounds like you got a problem. Have you ever thought about going to anger management? You ought to try it because it sounds like you need it, and it might help.

From: Jeff

I've got a better idea...why don't you kiss my ass, you knee-jerk reactionary fuck!

Rumors and gossip, nothing, I told you I met with her dad, damn it, and *he* said she spoke. He's in a position to know if his daughter said something. Of course I wasn't there but I can't imagine what reason he'd have had to tell me that if it wasn't true.

And what the hell is it to you, anyway? There were those of us who loved Billie Jean and only want to think that she would maybe someday be all right again, or as all right as anybody could be under those circumstances. It's isn't denying reality to have a little hope for a future positive outcome, and it doesn't hurt a goddamn thing except the sensitivities of hateful fucks like you who want to deny everybody any hope at all.

That's about as kind as I'm going to be to you after you calling me a liar. I was there, and I know what Billy P. said. You weren't.

In other news, I've gotten a bunch of emails from folks thinking about the wrong brother in the earlier story I told. It wasn't Kenny, it was the younger half-brother. Kenny is some sort of Big Wheel at M&M Mars. His net worth probably exceeds Pickens County's annual budget, which of course means he'd be mighty hard to go after considering the roomful of lawyers they'd have to navigate just to get to where he was, plus, he was popular in High School and you couldn't empanel a Pickens County jury that would convict him, nobody would ever believe he'd do anything wrong, even if he did. He's a crafty fucker, when all of his peers were signing half-million dollar mortgages for these damn McMansions everybody's trying to build and buy, he custom built a very modest home and I bet by now it's paid for. He's so tight with money, he squeaks when he walks, I bet he's got the first dollar he ever made. Nope, he's bulletproof, essentially. It's the youngest brother that can't seem to pull it together.

From: Who Cares
Email: GetYour FactsStraight

Why is it that people in this town have nothing better to do than run their mouth spreading rumors and gossip...esp. about something that don't know anything about?! The real fact is...Billie Jean is practically the same as she was the day she went in there and she will never be the same again. Why don't you people get your story straight and quit spreading "things you wish" were gonna happen and come down to reality!!!!

From: Jeff
Email: jeff@jaspersucks.com

Speaking of police, I ran into Billy P. this morning. He wanted to let you all know that he appreciated your support. There were a lot of you who were supportive in one way or another both during the last election cycle and during the dark times with Billie Jean.

He had what I considered some real good news about Billie Jean, he said that she's beginning to talk again. I took it that she's going to have to learn a lot of stuff all over again, but if she can come back from all this it would truly be a miracle and just to be honest with you people, I could use one right now.

I've got a brother who I had to go get out of jail last night, I was up there until 11 PM working through that. I've been getting people out of jail for a long time, but it never took this long. I didn't bitch to Billy about it this morning, and I didn't go up there last night demanding political favors and shit or threatening to start a campaign on JS like I did against the hospital, because that's not who I am. I just jumped through whatever hoops were presented. If anybody up there connected me with JS, they didn't mention it either, or they secretly had been wishing Billy P. had lost and were taking it out on me while they could.

First and foremost, before I forget to mention it, the rules about bonding people out have changed. If it's been a couple of years since you've done that, pay attention.

It used to be that they had a Tax Record book and just looked you up in it based on your name, which they'd get off your ID. If you had enough property to cover the bond, they'd honor it. Now, apparently, it takes a deed, a tax bill, and a receipt where the bill has been paid, and I had to dig all that shit up because I wasn't told the rules had changed until after the Court House had closed, at which point I'd already sat at the jail for three hours. It took about eight hours from the time I first got to the jail to the time I walked out with my brother. It doesn't take that long in Fulton County to get somebody out.

It really annoyed me, because not only could I have easily gotten all these papers at the Court House while it was still open, I'd already been to the Magistrate's Office earlier because the jail denied any knowledge of a bail having been set. I'd talked to the attorney, I knew the amount, and the SO should have known, too. It's written on the warrant, for God's sake. They forced me to go to the Magistrate's Office and get confirmation, at which point I discovered that a woman named Helen at the SO had it all along. I had the Magistrate's Office call the jail and confirm the bond, which got that much accomplished but still was totally unnecessary.

So at this point, everybody's on the same page about the bail. I sit there. And sit there. Finally, I gave up, after watching folks just sort of mill around, doing nothing. When a guy came out of the back, went outside, and came back in with a big wad of mail (it was around five then, it wasn't official mail, it was probably his personal mail), I knew that I just wasn't a priority. I told the lady at the desk that I gave up. I went home for a while.

I went back out there, and somebody finally came out from the back to talk to me about my brother, but that was when I got the news that I'd need all this paperwork that wasn't readily available now that the Court House was closed. So Jessica and I go *back* home and start digging like mad through stuff we haven't filed and some stuff we *had* filed. We finally came up with all this shit, and went back out there and sat for another few hours until somebody could be bothered to bring me my brother.

I don't now, nor never did, expect anybody to kiss my ass, but it would have been good if somebody had been communicating with me. If you ever have to get somebody out of jail up there, be sure you dig all that stuff up *before* you leave the house. With any luck, they won't choose to do their personal mail or whatever and ignore you like they ignored me.

It might even be good if they would communicate *with each other*. What do they have to do out there, beg Helen to release her godlike knowledge? Was that why I was waiting for all that time before I finally went to the Magistrate's Office? What is Helen's position, anyway, the "One What Can Read That Thar High-Falutin' Print-Writin'"? It's fucked up to picture a whole bunch of people waiting patiently just like I was for one person to read them the warrant. Maybe that's why they went and got their mail, so they'd have some pictures to look at while they waited for somebody to come read the warrant to them.

One bit of entertainment came out of it, if you could call it that. A woman who had been instrumental in getting me sued a few years back came in to get a transfer bond. Her kid had been caught with meth in another county. Her papers weren't what the jailer wanted somehow or another, and boy did she raise hell. As she waited, she talked to me quite a bit, but she'd apparently forgotten what I looked like. I just sat there and smiled and talked back like a good Southern gentleman. She never did realize who I was, and I thought that was funny, after all the hell she'd caused. Of course, in the end, fucking with me cost her somewhere around twenty thousand dollars...you'd think she'd remember me *really* plain...

Importance is subjective and no matter how much effort is put into some Pickens things-nothing will change. Tate Man, no Tate doesnt need unfriendly folks and Koreans see things different than we do-by that I mean manners and such. I agree they could be friendlier and folks would treat them better too but then you always have the ones who would take advantage as well. Tate also has a crew of night crawlers, peepers and prowlers. Guilty parties if you read this, we are just waiting for you to slip up a few good times and you will be where the last person they caught is now-prison. We know who you are, your neighbors are sick of you and the rest of us are too, always trying to tear up and steal that which isnt nailed down. One of the first lessons a student in a linguistics class learns is that dialect is not a product of or factor in intelligence. It is merely a reproduction of sounds, pronunciations, and indigenous expressions ingrained during the acquistition of speech at an early age. Any Southerner could have been born in and spent his early years in Londond, and his speech would be exactly as any other British person's around whom he spent much time as a toddler. In short, environment is the key. One can only imitate what has been heard, utilized by the brain, and mimicked.

Watch the movie "Nell," with Jodie Foster. In the movie, Nells speech is exactly like her mother's, a woman who suffered stroke at an early age and then rears her daughter in isolation in the Carolina wilderness. Nell speaks like the stroke victim because the stroke victim is the only person she heard speak as she grew up. Nell's speech has nothing to do with what she can learn and what she can accomplish.

Proper speech and enunciation have their place in business and academia via both the spoken and written word, but in the vast scheme of life, they amount to little.

Jasper is not the first or only Medical people who make excuses or cover up what went wrong-IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. Nothing brings people back after the fact, but the next time is what matters. So, Graveside find out and clean it up-cuz folks wont tolerate it-too bad in Law enforcement, Medicine, and other fields there is such a pissing contest, when they should all forget glory and just try to work together as much as possible. This is what I hate about being in Medicine is the contest-I aint playin!

That being said, I think Mrs. Ray's own safety might have been at issue in a public job??

Alot of folks dont think she knew about SueAnn for sure anyway-but all the same hurting an innocent person because they didnt know wont help now will it?? Also, what about the media aka Nancy Grace and Geraldo at Large-if you people dont see what agreesive reporters they have, then you just aint looking right-they wont leave Ms. Ray alone just because she says she didnt know. People always want to believe the worst and most of the time they do, so at the very least alot of hurtful things would have been said and questions most likely would have been asked to Ms. Ray in a public job. Wonder why people dont think? Wonder why people like trouble?? I suppose it depends on the personality in question- and Jeff last count I had and I am sure its more by now there were between 500 and 600 houses to be sold in Pickens.

I will say this some real estate folks here are gonna have to let other agents co-op soon-its about time too. Pickens, face it, whether you like it or not-THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGING.

Which board are you reading? There's been nothing like that said at all.

"Southerns" do just fine in whatever part of the country they're in. If you'd traveled much, you'd know that there are as many people in the USA who sound like us when they talk as there are folks who don't. I can take you to places in Tennessee and Texas where folks of *several* different races sound more country than I do.

Nobody "up here" is ready to do anything other than act like the rational, civilized human beings that we are.

The real question is this: Why are you so quick to demonize people you're not really talking to and don't even know? There's no point in playing the spin game, the evidence will show what it shows regardless of anybody's feelings in the matter. Regardless of how "Southern" we are, justice will be served in a court of law. The family is not on trial. I can't believe you're trying to make the argument that somebody's mother is somehow suddenly less qualified to work because of being related to the Defendant in this matter. Things are tough all over right now.

According to the sign on I-75, there are over 82,400 homes available for sale in the Cobb area. Hell, as much as Pickens County is overbuilt, I bet there are several thousand *here* available. I warned you, people. To make matters worse, the Fed jacked the overnight funds rate up again, which will in turn make the prime go to a quarter shy of eight percent. You people with adjustable rate mortgages will soon have definite figures on your maximum possible anal dilation, because we're too far along to stop what's going on with the economy. We postponed a lot of financial pain after 9/11 and instead of using the time it bought us, we went chasing off on a wacky $250 billion dollar escapade. None of this has anything to do with anybody's mother. It's about to be time to pay the piper, but I digress.

If somebody is truly harrassing the defendant's family, then the family has legal recourse just like anybody else would regardless of the circumstances. Nobody has seriously suggested trying the entire family or punishing anybody but the duly convicted. If anybody has been put on trial for something they didn't do, it's us, and by you, and for nothing.

It seems the people who responded to my previous message about the Sue Ann Ray murder took this as a personal avenue that they would seek justice. Others respond that the Ray's have no support in that area and anyone supporting them has to be fromn somewhere else. This is why southerns get a bad rep in other parts of the country. The narrow mindedness. No one has proven anything at this point. The facts are Quinton Ray's mother lost her job due to the harrassement from certain people in that area. She hasn't been charged or isn't involved in any way yet is unable to find employment due to all of this. They are people too, they have suffered a loss too and they are being treated as if they committed this crime, plotted and assisted in this girls murder. How many of you even know the Ray Family? It just seems everyone up there is ready to convict these people before even knowing the entire story. To me, that is simple narrow mindedness.

Whoever posted the "campaign sign" down at the Citgo:

First of all, I appreciate the support, though I am not running for mayor. I don't live in town and if I did I wouldn't want the job.

Second, if I DID live in town and wanted the job, I'd like to have the support of both men and women, so your "BubbaBob for Mayor" missive on the bathroom wall wouldn't be too effective, ignoring half the population (no, this is NOT an invite for you to have your girlfriend repeat it in the ladies room).

Third, you just cost the store owner some money for no good reason. If you look around at the store since he bought it, Jerry has made it look a lot better than it did, and that includes the bathrooms. That paint job is not a cheapo do-it-yourself weekender job. He paid a bit of coin to have a nice store and, frankly, the :BubbaBob for Mayor" looks tacky. So, bottom line, while I do appreciate the support as I said, please don't go around continuing to put up "campaign signs" like that. I ain't running and it makes you look bad.

See y'all at the peanut stand.

Thanks. It's amazing what you can teach yourself to do once you stop worrying about making a living. I used to think I had to make a million dollars, and immediately, to be happy...and I was miserable most of the time. Now, I don't think about money at all, and I'm much happier.

I bet a lot of people would find that was the case in their lives, too. I mean, hell, how much stuff do you *really* need? I've started throwing shit out left and right around here, mostly projects I started on and don't have the time or interest to finish. Easy there, Killer.

There is more than a little bit of indignation about this, but I'd point out to you that nobody has acted or even seriously suggested that anybody be deprived of their rights. We "narrow minded hill folk" are going to see justice served, but we do it the right way, whether or not it pains us.

We've all had arguments with our spouses, sometimes deadly ones, but nobody had to die. That's primarily what bothers me personally about this. I didn't know SueAnn and I am aware that she might not have been the inoffensive creature that the pictures seem to show, but even if she was wasn't, she didn't deserve that hole in the ground. Why do I say this, you ask?

I was married for six years to a woman who bore me two kids. In short order, she ruined my friendships, my net worth, my credit, my relationship with what remained of my family. When there was nothing left, she ran *me* off and then was married less than six months later to another victim. His folks lived in Southern California, and she took my two little kids to the other side of the continent for four years. I only saw them during the summers, and then for only a few weeks. Out of the whole year. When I got to missing them and couldn't stand it, even knowing what would potentially happen, I'd call, and she'd taunt me if she answered the phone, saying things like, don't you wish you could talk to them...I've already got them calling this other guy "Daddy", it won't be long before you are gone from their memory anyway...

I knew where she was the whole time, and could have stopped her in this method, but I didn't. I didn't because I've known two women in my lifetime whose mothers met horrible, violent deaths, and it marked them for life. So I gritted my teeth and did nothing.

If SueAnn were a mean person, even a mean person of the calibre I've just described, she still couldn't be dealt with in this manner because of the kid. The sad truth of my situation was that *I* created it. Nobody made me hook up with that woman. By having kids with her, I cemented my own fate in that area and I knew it, and I was paying the piper, so to speak.

If Quenton did this, then he'll go to jail for it, but the real punishment will probably be having to look in the kid's eyes and know that the kid knows he killed the mother. That's a judgement I never want to face.

The news, blogs and flurry on web reports on the death of Sue Ann Ray have finally slowed down and everyone awaits the uncoming trial. I found this web site on an engine search for information about Sue Ann's case. It is amausing, love the name and the discussion topics are great. I am shocked and saddened by the loss of Sue Ann Ray. I guess what I wish others would consider is that their are two families here in pain, two families suffering a horrible loss. People always assume if their child was ever involved in something like this they would walk away. News Flash: No you would Not!!! We don't pick what our children do but love them inspite of things they may or may not have done. In the case of Sue Ann their are many unanswered questions. How did she die? When did she die? If we don't know how she died can it be murder? How involved is Qunintons family? As a distant relative, I can assure you the mother had no clue of these activities. Her and Danny Ray have had a marriage like none known of today. He has left for weeks on end on hunting trips or bike trips and her never know one detail on what he did. Her keeping Chasity was a normal thing for her to do, nothing evil or caluated in a plot to assist Quinton in whatever happened to Sue Ann. It seems no one in Pickens County has given any thought to the connection of Sue Ann's disappearance and that of her cousins. Danny Jenkins was the only person who was in the picture for both disappearances. Sue Ann had information to share with her aunt in reference to her missing cousin on the very night she disappeared, does that not indicate perhaps there is more to this case than we know. I beleive Quinton Ray acted but not alone. I beleive there are more layers to this case than we know. I beleive each person is intitled the a fair and just trial. We can all hate Quinton Ray and his family but that is not a convicition for murder. It never ceases to amaze me the narrow mindedness of the hill folk in Georgia

I'm tired of answering this question. I coded this site out by hand, because I'm good like that. I stole the colors and backgrounds from somebody who had stolen them from someone else. I forget which registrar I used to register the second-level domain, but you can look that up. It's hosted in free hosting space by my old dialup provider.

If you want to do this, learn HTML, buy a program like Dreamweaver that will do it for you (even MS Word will let you do simple pages by saving them as webpages), or pay somebody who knows.

Greetings All!

Thanks Trevor...glad I could offer a little insight on flying. You're right by the way..Flying to me was no hard to learn than driving a vehicle. Only thing to remember is ya just can't pull over to the curb if there is a problem!(LOL)

If you don't have any phobias about it its really a joy.

The guy I mentioned also rents his planes starting at around $60 an hour and you buy the fuel. Lessons WERE $40 an hour and you buy the fuel but I'm sure they've increased.

Thanks for doing what you're doing brother...May God bless and watch over you!

Trevor, it's NOT that hard...most of the time. When things go to hell is when it gets hard.

My dad drove fast movers for the Air Force way back when, and he said even fighters were easy MOST of the time. He described the act of flying as hours upon hours of boredom interspersed by brief moments of stark raving terror.

I guess it would get boring with 20K+ logged hours, but I always thought flying was one of the most exhilerating things I have done. My feelings about flying match the words of the poem "High Flight"...

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence.

Hov'ring there I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air.

Up, up the long delirious, burning blue, I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or even eagle flew -

And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod The high untresspassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

Pilot Officer Gillespie Magee No 412 squadron, RCAF Killed 11 December 1941

To me, THAT is how flying feels.

With apologies to Jeff for the repititious sign off...see y'all at the peanut stand.

I never really knew Rebecca, but I found out today that she is a thoroughly decent human being. She'd been divorced from Greg a long while, but instead of being catty, she walked up to Greg's current wife and put her arm around her as if they were old friends. I've never seen anybody do anything more selfless in that situation. It's enough to make you forget to be cynical about human nature.

I worked for 22 years with isotopes up to 10 curie in every variety of basic industry. The isotopes: alpha, beta, gamma, as well as x-ray and neutrons, etc were used for non-contacting types of measurement to determine specific gravity, %solids, degree baume, moisture, basis weight, etc.

At that time 5 REM (radiation equivalent in man) was considered a 'safe' dose to have been received in one years time over a period of 20 years. 5 Rem or RAD (radiation absorbed dose) do not do the same amount of biological damage to man. REM & RAD are not exactly the same except for certain types of radiation. Most beta radiation cannot penetrate more than a few feet of air and of course was used for relatively 'light' measurements such as basis weight of a single ply of puffs tissue.

There is no 'safe' dose of radiation no matter what the type, though alpha, which is an actual particle is the worst if ingested internally.

The quantities discussed in regards to the Dawsonville nuclear lab site are indeed small compared to what was considered 'safe' about 20 years ago. I don't know if the numbers have changed since then or not but I assume they have been tightened up somewhat.

Just my two cents worth
Jack the Jerk from Jasper, Jawja.

Hi Jeff,

I don't know what your'e posting or not posting about the sight in Dawson forrest but I do know it's definately a "hush-hush" subject.

My family has ties to Lockheed ever since the place was built and my Granddad spent over 35 years down there. He told me they use to make regular "runs" to that place weekly from Marietta in trucks to "off load" discarded materials.

I've often wondered what was disposed of up there more than what was done on sight. I do know when the first C5As were built from 1965 to 1972 that the weight in the wing tips were spent uranium incased in 2" of lead. The contract was cancelled abruptly with only 52 of the 150 Galaxys being built. When the program was revised in 1984 the same thing was used as wingtip weight and counterbalance weight in the rutters, flaps, and elevators. Just thought I would pass that along and if you choose to post thats cool and if not I completely understand...your call.

I'm amazed by the people who know of it but think little of it or the threat it could pose. I've got friends who still hunt in that area all the time but I've always steered clear except for one brief forray just to see.

Greetings All!

Trevor, I Don't know much about Pickens Co. but in Cherokee at the airport there is an excellent instructor. His name is Randall Simons and his school / training is one of the best you will find locally. The most important thing, to me anyways, is that his equipment(planes) are top notch and well maintained.

I would suggest you stop in and talk with him and he can set you up with your FAA flight manuals and give you an ideal of the expense your looking at. You now have to have an FAA background check and a clearance to recieve instruction. You are required 12 hours of training and one solo landing before your instructor can submit you to FAA for testing. The biggest thing to learn is your preflight checks and becoming familiar with all seven of you instruments and what their functions are. That is probably 80% of the FAA written. Then, you do a 50 mile sortie and a 150 mile flight at ceiling altitude (7000ft) although pressurization is at 9000ft. during these test flights, you will perform various task to demonstrate your ability and proficiency.

Anything you receive passing marks on doesn't have to be repeated. You must pass the written exam before you can take the physical. You can then, after 40 flight hours, apply to become instrument rated on whatever aircraft you have the accured hours on. You must rate and qualify in order: 1)Prop(single engine) 2)Prop(twin) 3)Turbo(jet single) and so on.

Instrument is something nice to have but requires alot of hours and work. If you fly or plan to fly alot I would recommend it. If you plan to do it as a hobby and during daytime then visual is all you need. You will learn alot of instrument just from flying visual and it is a must should you get caught up in a freak summer storm. From experience though, I think it best to fly into another local and wait it out rather than attempt something your not ready for!

Oh yeah, configuring and plotting your flight plan is another important part of the FAA written. If you're a Sunday pilot just buzzing around the local you may never file one but you must know how. I learned on a small Cessna 142 named "tango"..A beatiful little craft which is a pleasure to fly. Remember, A wing over has a 7 to 1 glide pattern(If your a mile high and your engine dies you can glide seven miles to find safe landing) If your in a wing under you'll drop like a rock cause they don't glide brother!

Hope this info helps you out in your decision and if you look Randal up I know you want be dissapointed! There's no greater feeling of freedom in the world than being at 7000 @ 70 knots with not another soul in sight...

Selah

Bronco, I've got your last message in a holding pattern, because I don't have a way to contact you to ask you if you're really sure you want to post what you've just said.

You've apparently done a good bit of digging into this, because you're in possession of some pretty esoteric information about what you were talking about. It matches with what I've been told before. Unfortunately for you, there's still a lot of interest in keeping this one quiet. In the post 9/11 era, they've got all sorts of ways to keep embarassing fuckups under wraps in the Name of National Security or whatever. You might have broken this one prior to 9/11, but now they'll never let you, not like this.

What I had in mind was a slow, general raising of the various issues associated with this in the public consciousness, especially so that no one person could be hurt by the inevitable backlash when they realized that folks in general were beginning to understand that there was a story there. Then, when there was enough general awareness, I wanted to steer the discussion toward full disclosure of just what the hell happened over there and break the Wall of Silence. We deserve to know what happened, and if we aren't careful, they'll just dump a million tons of gravel in there, call it "development", and then we'll never know. They've done it before.

I'm not censoring you, but I wanted to be sure you really wanted to post this information before I put it up.

Good man. When I was planning on doing this, the plan I'd mapped out was to get the physical first. That gives you a log book entry showing you've got a clean bill of health. The question pool for flight school used to be posted online (I'm sure it still is, somewhere, like the ham radio tests) and I was going to memorize that and get that testing out of the way, then start hanging out at active General Aviation airports like PDK and eventually find somebody willing to fly with me and teach me a thing or two in exchange for my picking up the tab for the rental, fuel, and that.

That's as far as I've ever gotten with the project. I wish you a whole lot more luck.

It's good to know that of the thirty years I've been here, the radiation over there has been "at background levels" for the last four or so...except, of course, at the Hot Cell, where it will probably remain at high levels for, oh, let's say *eternity*.

Just what everybody knows...and what nobody seems to be concerned about in any way.

Periodically, I bring it up just to hear people say I'm nuts or that I'm making it up to scare people, then I point them to Georgia's own surveillance program of the radiation which still exists in Dawson Forest. There was a TEN MILLION WATT nuclear reactor within walking distance of where a lot of you live, folks, and they ran it for TWELVE YEARS.

I give folks time to read the data, and then I tell them it's a shame they aren't willing to listen to old Uncle Jeff, because this isn't the worst thing that was done in the area. See, we've got this housing boom that happened here due to the Bush Administration pumping 88 billion dollars into the economy, most of which ended up as speculative building, and we're all *uptown* now, but years ago, up here in the woods, it was generally assumed that nobody that mattered would want to live up here, so it was okay to do all *kinds* of wacky shit out in the woods. Nobody believes what's in front of their face, so there's no point in talking about anything else.

At minimum, since it's so well documented and nobody has really tried to lie about the Nuclear Aircraft Laboratory (run by Lockheed, by the way), the existence of that nuclear reactor should have been made part of every real estate disclosure for every home sold in Pickens and Dawson County in the last quarter century. If I was on a jury and somebody brought suit against a real estate organization, broker, or agent, or seller, for failure of disclosure, I'd give the plaintiff anything they asked for. If somebody got cancer and could tie it to exposure in some way, I'd find for the plaintiff then, too. We've spent 250 billion dollars taking out Saddam Hussein over the fear that he had one of these things, but the one in your backyard is a kinder, more gentle nuclear reactor, I guess.

Don't believe me, I don't care. Take a leisurely hike over there, it's public land, and take a Geiger counter with you. There's a nice map in the link I gave you. If you don't have a GPS receiver, I'll loan you one.

But I'm not going with you.

What's your eventual goal, Trevor? Are you planning on sticking with VFR or are you going to get your instrument rating?

I've planned on doing that for twenty years, every time I get started down that road again, I get sidetracked. At the time I was looking at it, it seemed simplest to get the physical first, then finish the ground school, then find somebody who was flying and get them to show me (at my expense, of course) most of what I needed to know, thereby saving money on flight instruction (the most expensive part).

When I was on active duty (and guard duty afterward) the MWR folks actually had planes to rent. I don't know if they do that now or not, but it would be a much cheaper alternative than buying.

Jeff,

Funny about journals. Most people either loved them or hated them. Very few were ambivalent.

I had to laugh at you comment about masochism. In a way it was sort of a penance. I always read them on Sunday mornings instead of going to church!

Gerald Parker had the funniest comment about journals when he was a student. He said, "You know, Mr. Blatt, reading all those journals, you're like the god of the tenth grade." There WAS a certain omniscience involved!

Journals were interesting. Some people poured their souls out. Most people did the minimum to get by. Some people deliberately aggravated me (e.g., Jim Fowler and Steve Jones) and some kissed ass. There were always a handful that I really looked forward to. Of course, Parker's was as good as they got. I remember really enjoying Cathy Curran's as well. I'm sure some of those folks have treasured theirs. It's like everything else; you get out of it what you put into it. I'll tell you this, though, when and if I get another teaching gig, I will definitely require "those goddamn journals."

Hey BB,
Glad to see you've got the gumption, dedication and intelligence to research some problems as relates to courts in Pickens, particularily the magistrates office (or orfice if you prefer). Thanks for the info and update. Just goes to show why and how some can violate the laws with impunity and still get support from the cohorts who make JASPER SUCK.

I know of one fellow who did some research regarding election results that had a bearing on the magistrates office some years back. Not related to the current officials. Seems that the absentee ballots for quite some time had confirmed, percentage wise, the general results in all cases except for a particular time when the magistrate then in office was up for re-election. Suddenly, for some strange reason, the absentee ballots totally dissagreed with the results of the other precincts. The one seeking re-election lost in almost all voting areas except for the absentee ballots which showed a win by a large percentage. The availability of absentee ballots for those who could not get to the polls was loose back then and has since, thankfully, been corrected.

Keep up your good work.

Most of the time the loser appolagized and took it as next time it will go down differently which on most occaisions the knocks and chos had set in and returned in the way of respect. I can actually remember a few teachers getting wind of some throw downs and watched. I know for good Ole Jonnie Weaver was ring side for one of mine at Roper Park on a Sat. night. In the end he did convince the other guy (Stevie Watkins) who went to prison for murdering my neighbor not to long after that that he had more than he possibly handle on that night and that he needed to heal for a month or two to let the swelling return to normal. I broke his 2 front teeth which lodged under the skin and wedged into my knuckles. The worst thing for me was having to go to Dr. Parole the next day and telling him I was boxing with gloves on only to have him find hair and then slice teeth out of my hand. Uh the fond memories we have. Later Mikey.

Swamplord, I have an inkling who you are, and I can say that what you did in school is behind you. You may not be a complete "swamp angel," but I know from certain sources that you have more of a heart and more kindness beneath your exterior than you'd like anyone to know.
Time changes us all, and I doubt seriously that you're a "jackass." We all were pricks from time to time in high school because the social pecking order brought that aspect of our personalities to the surface.
Looking back, I know the times I was cruel to people were based on my own insecurities. I did it to feel big about myself. I treated one poor guy like shit. Fortunately, I've since found him on Classmates.com and had the chance to sincerely apologize for the way I used to treat him. I'm glad I got to do that. He deserves apology from me every day of his life. I still feel terrible about the way I treated him. I always will.

What we must realize is that within the egocentrism of youth, we don't understand the impact our actions have on others, nor do we really care most of the time. It's only when we mature that we can have the capacity to know how we can hurt others. Some people still don't care and continue to hurt those around them.

As for myself, I feel as though I've journeyed a thousand years since high school graduation, learning what is truly important in life. In the end, what matters is love and how we treat our fellow human beings. As corny and sappy sweet as it sounds, that's what lives. Careers end, new cars rust, houses rot or burn to the ground, obsolete technology gives way to new technology, a lifetime's savings is spent on final expenses.

Love, however, lodges in the hearts of others, and the moments we spend with our families and friends and the opportunities we have to help others are indelible imprints on the pages of time that can never rust or be worn away or erode.

I only wish I could have realized this two decades ago. I only wish I had been the person in my youth that I am now.

We got into a conversation about that on here about a year ago. I made the comment that I'd never seen an ass-whipping that didn't stick. I'm not talking about a shove or a slap, either, I'm talking about a good old fashioned passionate ass-whipping that ends with the victor tying the laces of the loser's shoes together and wrapping them around a power line, like a bola.

The consensus was sort of what you're saying, that we policed ourselves and nobody got shot or stabbed, and there wasn't this whiny quality to American life that we deal with now.

Well I remember Bruce Pilgrim and I thought he was a real "Dick" and never had anything at all good to say about Mrs. Morris. Most of the folks I went to school with really hated that bitch, she treated a lot of the girls better than the boys but a bunch of the gals feel the same way about her. Jerry Fountain and Charlse Holt along with Mrs. Wheeler were among my favorites. They treated me fairly and gave me an even shake. Oh yeah Mrs. Kirk (Woods at one time) was a pretty good teacher. She married Mac Hipp. Does anyone remember Mr. and Mrs. Watkins? She was fired from teaching the year we had her. We had a boy in our class that was going through Kimo and had periods where he was losing his hair and times she referred to him as spot. We also had Gilda Jerrard which had to where a wig because of the same thing and she actually commented about her as the bald girl with the wig. We actually sat down a break one day and came up with a plan to knock her lights out when the bell went off and picked a person (who is a preacher now) to bust her in the head with a rock. Long story short the rock was thrown super hard but fell short and took her ankle out from under her and with a loud scream that was one of her last weeks teacher here for it called to the attention along with few meeting we all had to attend and make statments about her and the treatment she dished out. Looking back at it, that wasn't the best thing to do but there were a few other teachers that heard her comments and just laughed at it, luckly they told the truth at the hearings and bye bye bitch. But back then we stuck together, no guns, and no knives. You asked for trouble and somebody would meet you after school in a fair contest of wills and give you all could handle. The next week you back to being friends but sometimes with a little more respect.
What about Coach Malice, anyone remember that dick?

If you'll hit the button in the middle of the three buttons on the top-right of your browser window, it will expand the window to fill the screen, BB. Then, you can read the whole message instead of having to pick out a word or two. I'm considering, of course, that this is another case of lack of computer savvy as opposed to some weird sort of buffalo-philia that requires you to immediately respond to any perceived slight against your beloved buffalo...

The problem with buffalo pictures is that it was an *English* class, not an art class. There were some great writers in there, but in every gathering of folks there is a statistical distribution around an average level of ability, and that means there were some dumbasses, too.

It's not funny if you have to have it explained to you...but rest assured, no buffalo were harmed in the making of this posting.

And this tagline, see y'all at the peanut stand...can we get a couple of taglines and rotate them? It's getting stale. I suppose I could write a bit of Perl scripting so that every time you signed off, it would say "Kiss your ass for a quarter" or something equally witty...

I bought a journal that belonged to Bruce Pilgrim's wife (or probably ex-wife now), at a yard sale at Bruce's house. According to that journal he was very mean to her. I never had him as a teacher, and I'm thankful. In other dealings with him, I never cared very much for him.

Several of you have mentioned Bruce Pilgrim lately ... Bruce lives in Dahlonega and teaches Drama at Lumpkin Co. High. He has recently (within the last year or so) lost a great deal of weight. I've done a lot of community theatre with him and find him to be extremely talented and very focused on his craft. I like him!

I never thought you had an attitude problem. Well, maybe a couple of times, but not as a rule. Maybe that means I was worse than you, I dunno.

My only thing with Blatt was those goddamn journals. Once I finally realized there was no way around it, I used to have a bit of fun, saying shit like, "My psychiatrist says..." in the journal entries. You should have seen some of the stuff I said, but he read it, because he remarked on it in the margins.

Now, rather than seeing the journals as punishment, they seem more like an exercise in masochism for him, because he actually sat down and read all those things. I know for a fact that there were about ten people in the class who could write, and on the other side of the Bell curve there had to be folks drawing pictures of buffalos and shit instead of writing in English.

I wonder if he condescended a bit, and made buffalo notations in the margins for those folks?

Bronco, I won't argue about Blatt's omnipotence - as I said, it seemed like I was the only one who had an issue, and in that case, I have to blame myself. Everyone I know who had him thought he was the greatest. I was just a teenage jackass with an attitude problem. Sadly, while I am no longer a teenager, I AM still a jackass with an attitude problem.

Well, if someone is serious about getting rid of Johnny "huff and puff" Weaver, all one needs to do is take a look at the unadulterated mess located off of Georgiana Street extension into Moore St. MY GOD.. Not only is the property a very serious eyesore, I would be concerned about anyone living within half a mile from there. For being a mayor stating he wants things to be clean it's obvious that him and his staff have not been performing their duties and they themselves in trouble with the State for allowing such unmitigated filth to go unchecked in the area. I am all for people having their property as they want, but it is obvious that this particular area is in serious need of a cleansing of epic proportions. I would hate to see this filth wind up in the water system if it hasn't already.

Jack...I've noticed Barney's pic in the paper a lot lately too. I guess he has some pretty severe self-esteem issues to go along with his control freak personality and has to get some validation wherever he can. If that means he has to get his pic in the local paper to improve his lousy opinion of himself, fine. That's his problem. I've had my pic in there a few times in the last year from when I spoke at three civic club meetings, and when the paper did the story on the explosion, but I didn't have to provide my own picture and write my own story to pump up my self esteem. I ALMOST, but not quite, feel sorry for him.

On the subject of the out of county magistrate, Paul Carden is still there to the best of my knowledge. There are so many problems with his still being a magistrate it's not even funny. Here's a few of the highlights:

He isn't qualified. Georgia Code requires ALL magistrates to reside in the county where they serve. He lives in Cherokee and serves in Pickens. Illegal.

He was improperly appointed. Georgia Code requires that the Chief Magistrate, Larry Ray, request approval for a "senior magistrate" or whatever he is called, from a judge of the Superior Court. Ray did make the request, and Judge Weaver did approve Cardin. Georgia Code also requires that the appointment be approved by the "county's governing authority", in our case the sole commissioner. Carden was appointed during Newton's last year in office, and a thorough search of commission meeting minutes from July 2004 forward, and direct questioning of commissioner's office staff that were there during that period, show that Carded was never approved by Newton, and hasn't been approved by Jones since. Illegal.

He is incompetent. In my appeal a transcript or tape recording of the hearing would have been helpful. He didn't record the hearing, and, according to Larry Ray, the hearing didn't have to be recorded since Georgia law says magistrate's court is not a "court of record". Wrong. A 2004 US Supreme Court decision made EVERY court a "court of record" if a proceeding in that court has any potential for depriving anyone of their civil liberties (going to jail). Carden sentenced me, before I won the appeal, to $500.00 or 60 days in jail. THAT made it a "court of record". He also threatened me with jail for contempt because I didn't give him proper deference. THAT made it a "court of record". The hearing should have been recorded. The incompetent boob didn't record it.

Another example of his incompetence...the maximum fine for the offence I was charged with, according to the county attorney, Phil Landrum, was $200.00. Carden tried to fine me $500.00. He hasn't a clue what he is doing.

Last, at least for now, is the matter of his attitude. He has a severe case of "Black-robe-itis"...he doesn't think he is a judge, he thinks he is God.
What you have is an illegal, improperly appointed, incompetent "judge" that Larry Ray defends. I have a feeling that Pickens voters will be reminded of that shortly before the next election when Ray is up for re-election. The voters will also probably be reminded of the role Barney and the sheriff's office played in this, also shortly before the next election. Remember, I have two years to file any lawsuits. That's the second half of 2007. The primary is early in 2008. You never can tell...it might affect both the sheriff's and chief magistrate's races.

See y'all at the peanut stand.

A question I'd be more interested in the answer to, is what ever happened to Julie?

And why are we all pretending we don't know to whom the fuck these initials belong? (Yes, I remember my English lessons, it's more of a sin to end a sentence in a preposition than it is to use the word "fuck".)

Why haven't I updated the site in four days? I was in Fort Lauderdale. It didn't seem as important as what I was doing, for some reason, to play on the Internet. I appreciate everybody posting into the void, though, while I was gone.

There was another question, but I can't be arsed to go back and look. Ask it again or something.

Swamplord, I just don't understand how you didn't like Mike Blatt. He was the most intellectual teacher I ever had until I reached college. J.W. named him STAR teacher, and he damn well deserved it.

I remember Walter Gleason well. When I was in high school, an option to earn a half unit of credit as a teacher's aid existed. I was Lucile Atkins's (loved her, and still do) aid my junior year; thus, I worked in the counselors' office. I didn't take Gleason seriously, but he was a fun guy to be around.

That said, I don't believe that any of us can honestly say (with a few exceptions) that anyone from our past is a "big reason" why we've not done more with our lives.

I had terrible experiences with Glenda Young, Bruce Pilgrim, Tony Weaver, Mattie Summerour, and others; but I would be remiss to say these people were inherently bad or to say that they did some sort of permanent damage to my life. Ultimately, my life has been what I have made it. A great number of people have helped me throughout my life. The only hindrance I've ever encountered is that which has come from within myself.

Beatles songs totally rule-and I am way to young to have been a fan when they first arrived on the scene. I remember one teacher we had named Carleen Tippens-eventually the kids ran her off-I felt so sorry for her. I begged to have Cowart for math just because of the mayhem in Tippens class-the only way Cowart would leave you alone was if you knew the right answers-GOD HELP YOU IF YOU DIDNT! I even exempted his classes back in the day when you got to go uptown and not take the 12 week exams. Does anyone remember Lawton Baggs, when he was the PECE man? Lawton truly meant well and his efforts were often hampered by the bitter, jaded teachers of my day-and the ones running the show-I always wondered why the students with the 90 and above averages were not taken to jobs that required a college degree instead of the shoe plant or the rubber plant to watch those people do the deadend jobs. Why not take those kids to an attorneys office-or to a pharmacy to see what is involved with that job-or to Md's offices-I liked Mr. Baggs but in my mind PECE was a total failure.

Jeff, you mentioned class reunions. I honestly believe the reason many people don't show up is that they don't see the point. I personally take that stance.

The social aspect of school was at best mediocre, and the people with whom I traveled for 12 years (no kindergarten) have little or no relevance to my life now.

I'm also an entirely different person than I was then. I just don't see the point of reminiscing over the sophomoric highjinks of high school. I appreciate my education, but the social aspect and people are long put to rest.

Jeff et al.:

Thanks for contacting me. I am indeed very flattered by the comments on JS.com. After spending 17 years in the insurance/financial services industry, I decided last year that I would puke if I had to ask one more person to buy something and that I really wanted to go back to what I love--teaching.

Unfortunately, the bureacracy in Indiana is unbelievably horrible so it has taken me from last June 15 until day before yesterday (3/7) to obtain a license.

I left my job with Horace Mann in 2002 and worked for AIG VALIC until last November. I thought I had a permanent substitute position lined up at Kokomo HS (where Candace teaches Spanish) for an English teacher who was taking leave to adopt a baby. At the last minute, however, the birth mother changed her mind, and the teacher and I were both left high and dry.

So right now I am basically unemployed. But I am substitute teaching almost every day, and I am refereeing football, basketball, and baseball and really getting a kick out of it. I'm also writing some high school sports for the local paper. You can go to kokomotribune.com and search "Mike Blatt" if you want to check out any articles. Today I substituted for a PE teacher--easy money. I hope to have a permanent job teaching next fall.

As I mentioned, Candace is teaching Spanish. When we moved to the Midwest in 1992, she found it much easier to get a Spanish job than an English job so she took a couple of classes and got licensed in it. She enjoys it for the most part, but after 23 years of teaching she's getting a little fried.

We have two sons. Our oldest, Drew, is a senior this year and will go to Purdue next year as a Chemistry major (chemistry!??!!). He is very smart and scored higher on the SAT as an 8th grader than I did as a senior. Purdue is basically giving him free tuition for four years, but he's got to keep his grades up. He's a computer nerd, unathletic, but loves drama, band, the robotics team, and girls. He got his Eagle Scout at the end of 2005.

Our younger son Sam is a freshman this year. He has grown about a half a foot in the last year and is as tall as me--maybe a little taller! He's smart too--not an SAT guy like Drew, but he's more well-rounded. Sam is athletic--he's been a good baseball player and a good tennis player. He's decided to concentrate on tennis from now on. He also loves drama and has returned to band after a two-year hiatus. He's very interested in politics and very active in the Young Dems. He's served as a page in the Indiana legislature a couple of times. I suspect he'll turn out to be a social studies teacher.

Both of the boys are on the academic super bowl team at their HS, and fortunately, both of them took after Candace for looks, so they are very handsome guys. They are very good guys and we are blessed.

It's interesting to hear some of the names of teachers being bandied about. Brings back a lot of memories for me. I must say, I have never met anyone I admire more than Roy Cowart. He is, after all, Drew's godfather. Also, we love Kaye Chastain (Sam's godmother). Both of them were smart, dedicated, and--in very different ways--great teachers.

I can't express how great it is to be back working with young people. There is no doubt this is what I was born to do. I made some money in my other profession (although I'm not rich!), but I am so much happier now. I plan to teach till I croak or until Alzheimer's takes over.

I have a sneaking suspicion Bucking Bronco is GP. Always thought he'd be writing Doonesbury or have his own sit-com, but I'll bet he is one hell of a teacher!

Speaking of sit-coms and TV, Candace and I get a great kick out of seeing Tracy Middendorf on the tube. She's a very fine actress.

Hope this hasn't been too egotistical, but I figured you might want an update.

Thanks again for the kind words. It's very validating--especially at this time.

Mike

More times than not, my kids do what they are asked to do and they are respectful about it. That's where my issue comes about. It's just this one driver.

Hey Bubba-Bob
Our local Barney Fife has had his pix in the Pravda 6 or 7 times in the last few weeks. You're a better man, where's yours??

Other items:
1. Whut happened to the out of county magistrate who presided in violation of Ga code?
2. U are right on with your editorial on the sole-commissioner and his attempt to allow himself or others to run again by delaying the citizens vote for a change to this sole-dictatorship system.
first they said we needed 15,000 people to go the multiple commish route; when we got there they said we needed to wait till there were 25,000. Now that we're above that we need to wait some more!!
%&#@*( . Thus we see the typical actions of a sole commissioner, Jones now included. We need to DUMP this system and get 3 or so part timers with a professional manager who handles the daily events and has to follow their directions on budgets, projects, priorities, etc. This would undoubtedly cost less than the system currently in place which allows a 1 man boss to decide what flies and what doesn't.
Keep up the editorials but make them shorter so people will read them. Others need to get in on this bandwagon or it will never happen.

I hope to have a pleasant surprise soon for those of you who liked Blatt. I found Candace, if I can get her to answer my email I'll contact Blatt and see if he'll make a Special Guest Appearance here on JS.

I lived through Glenda's 8th grade English class, then I'll be damned if I didn't have her to deal with again at the Tech School. Pilgrim is probably living in a cardboard box somewhere now.

I've already said Sandra Payne was good. I think maybe BuckingBronco is good, too.

From: BuckingBronco

I had almost forgotten about Glenda Young. Here, Jeff, I will concede your point on authoritarian teachers who look down their noses at students. I had her in eighth grade. I will also include Bruce Pilgrim on that list.

Escapee, some of the teachers you mention were before Jeff's time and before my time. Queen was gone. Carney was gone. Both McDarises were gone. I think Johnny Weaver was there one year after I entered high school. Byers was principal part of the time I was there.

As far as teaching, Michael Blatt just can't be beaten. Kaye Chastain is top-notch as well in terms of knowing her subject matter. As far as genuine sincerity and compassion, Sandra Payne gets a medal. She was/is a beautiful person inside and out. As far as the job of teaching itself is concerned, I can testify that I love what I do, and I quite frankly love the kids. Sure, sometimes certain kids can push my buttons, but I truly believe each one of these young people has potential in some way. Intelligence isn't just a matter of "intelligent" or "unintelligent." Just because a kid struggles in a given subject doesn't mean he isn't intelligent. He just has to find the right path in life. The kids are why I go to work every day, and I enjoy being there. I'm halfway through my career, and I've never dreaded going to work. Like anyone, I get tired and want time off; but as a whole, all is well.

As for the politics of the school system. I steer clear. There are still those teachers who shouldn't be teaching, but in 15 years, I can probably only name a dozen. There are also the climbers who want nothing more than to work their way to the county office and the big bucks. Other than that, most teachers are there because they want to be.

I just stay in my classroom, take care of my students, and shut out all the rest.

It's sort of appropriate to leave Cowart off...I left him off my schedule, I knew there was absolutely no point.

Somebody was telling me old Byers was selling insurance now, and that they'd received a sales call from him. He would remember me too well to bother to call me. I wouldn't take his call, after 9/11 you have to be too careful what you say and I don't need the hassle of the aftermath of that conversation.

Jeff Thomason (I hope I'm spelling that right) went to work at the Tech School, also. He had some sort of hearing thing going on, but it didn't matter. He was one of those folks that seemed to instinctively understand mathematics. I was impressed. Tony Weaver was another of his sort.

I forgot about Gleason...if you took career advice from somebody whose career choices led them to be a "guidance counselor" at Pickens High, then you deserved whatever you got.

Gary Dickerson knew his shit, too, but still managed to be a nice person. I hope he got rich, too, but not as rich as Blatt.

Lionel Clark- I know what you mean and I was in debate for one year.
Coach Cowart- How could you leave Roy off any list...You either loved him or hated him. Not my favorite but, he did help lay the foundation for an engineering career.
Ronnie Byers- (later principal Byers) what a joke! He use to read Shakespear at the top of his lungs during "smoke break".
Sandra Payne- Only had her for home room.
Peggy Chapman- The consumate toletarian and queen of disciplian.
Ms.Prince- The best science teacher I ever had.
Glenda Young- was always talking about going to Univ. of Alabama and knowing Joe Namath. One of my worst ever but, I always hated English and as you all know by now it shows!!! (LOL)
Mr.Terry Queen- Just a "good ole farmer", had a lot respect for the man and he could BUST ASS back when such a thing was allowed.
Mr.Peoples- He was cool and had his own style of teaching.
Coach Ronnie Hunter- Actually, I liked the guy becuase his class was easy and I loved history.(really had his favorites though)
Mr.Gleason- everybodys favorite counselor.(never could figure out how he got the job)
Mr.Baggs and Mr.Craig- The PHS version of "the odd couple".
Coach Dickerson- Only knew him as a football coach, never had him for a class.
Coach Bluestien- Asshole with a capital "A".
Coach Jeff Thomason- I liked the guy and his dad Fred was my teacher at Votech.
Ms.Carney and her daughter...can't remember much about them.
Tony Weaver- Math teacher, don't remember much.
His Honorable mayor "JOHNNY"- Lets just say his teaching ability is probably on par with his mayorial ability...nuff said!

Rumor back then was his wife was doing the Sr. football players but, thats only rumor mind you!

Memory escapes me on the many others, whos presences haunted those hallowed hallways!

Does my opinion or anyones who is not on that jury matter? "NOT ONE BIT".

What I'm attempting to get across, is that trying someone in the media or the "court of popular opinion" is not what is important. What is important, is that these folks are giving all the rights they are intitled and have a fair trial with adequate representation.

Though my personal opinion, is that our legal system is flawed in many ways, it is none the less the best "justice" system in the world.

Nicely played. It strains credulity a bit, but we'll give you the benefit of the doubt along with the style points, especially the points gained from the your-mileage-may-vary disclaimer.

I'll have to disallow the straw man attack, though, I never said people go into education to control kids. I said they did it mainly out of lack of choice, having failed at something more "glamorous", to use Bookworm's word for it. And of course some folks do choose it from the beginning, probably after having read "Christy" or the "Anne of Green Gables" stories one too many times.

I don't recognize a lot of the names you've called, so I suppose you're either older or younger than me. I'll give my impressions, though, in the order you've called them out:

Geneva Chastain: No bells.
Rea Pritchett: Nope.
Debbie Lee: Nope.
Kate Payne: Nope. Sandra Payne was good, though. She understood sarcasm and was better at it than me. I learned a lot from her. Someday when I'm in a bad mood and really break it off in someone's ass here on JS, you might hear a wistful echo of Sandra.
Jim Evans: Nope.
Jerry Fountain: Nope.
Charles Holt, Cecilia Wheeler, Lisa Duckett, Suzy Boswell: Nope for all.
Kathy Morris: Sort of a distant bell ring...was she a heavyset girl, maybe with something unusual about one of her hands? Or was that just another spicy food nightmare?
Michael Blatt: This is what a teacher should be and never is. I have to note here that his fundamental competence took him elsewhere. I hope he got rich, he deserved it.
Kaye Chastain: Didn't she teach home economics? Never had her as a teacher, can't judge.
Myrna Adams West: I had to learn to deal with MAW on her own terms, and I'm glad I did. She taught me things I still use. They can't all say that. At best, many of them taught me things I already knew. She was the only one to sign my annual in a foreign language, and she knew that I could read it.
Lionel Clark: Perfect example of why psychological profiles should be developed on anybody who works with kids. I don't want to speak ill of the dead, so that's all I've got to say.
Sandra Payne: I've already kissed Sandra's ass enough in the above text. If she were to read this, I can just hear her sneer about what an ass-kisser...makes me a little homesick, actually.
Linda Hunter: Taught me to type in eighth grade on a damned old IBM Selectric. Maybe the Smithsonian still has one for those of you who don't know what a Selectric is. Susan Roland: Another distant bell, but no face or profile in my memory.

God, that was a walk down memory lane. Sort of like the 20th year high school reunion. That was a homely lot in 1985, take them all around, but they were beautiful at the reunion, all of them. I got a few emails, and then everybody disappeared again. I guess it's sort of like some weird species of groundhog that only comes out every five years or so. We're all family, but only for one night every five or so years.

First of all, let me start by saying that I appreciate not only the jobs that bus drivers, custodians, and cafeteria workers perform but I also appreciate them as human beings and for their friendship. I haven't eaten with any of them in a long while primarily because I don't share a common lunch period; but this very morning, I did have a nice leisurely chat with two of the custodians in my school for about 20 minutes. We joked around and had a few laughs. Likewise, I enjoy conversing with the guys from maintenance when they're in my school, and I certainly don't hold myself above them. Thus, the bottom line is that I appreciate them as human beings.

I also don't think I'm too good to do the same work they do. On a daily basis, I keep my classroom swept and the desks cleaned just the help out. The custodians are as much my colleagues as my fellow teachers.

As for your being a victim of the public school system, I imagine anyone gets as much out of the system as he puts in. I personally feel I gained a world of benefit from my public education. I can't speak for you. We all have different experiences.

As for authoritarianism, I don't believe many people go into education to control kids. I believe they go into education to help kids. Authoritarianism evolves from the fact that parents haven't taught their kids respect at home and haven't taught them to come to school and learn instead of misbehave and cut up. I HATE having to be a disciplinarian. I'd much rather use every moment to help kids learn. Unfortunately, that isn't the reality of circumstance.

As for teachers who were important in helping shape me as an individual and provide me with an education, I can name many who were positive role-models in my life. Geneva Chastain, Rea Pritchett, Debbie Lee, Kate Payne, Jim Evans, Jerry Fountain, Charles Holt, Cecilia Wheeler, Lisa Duckett, Suzy Boswell, Kathy Morris, Michael Blatt, Kaye Chastain, Myrna Adams West, Lionel Clark, Sandra Payne, Linda Hunter, Susan Roland. All of these teachers gave me a little something to take with me throughout life. I'm eternally grateful to them; and I've seen, from the students whom I love and who love me, that gratefulness returned. From a two-hour visit from a former student, to an e-mail from a former student who now lives in Maine, to a hug from a former student on the street or in the grocery store, I know I'm in the right profession.

I don't remember it fondly, if that's what you mean. I did go to Tate. When I look at the building now, I can't help but wonder why I didn't see things about it that I see now, and then I remember that I was about nine years old the first time I saw it. In thirty years, you pick up an appreciation or two, and I am still amazed at the scale of that thing and what went into building it. Luke Darby (he's dead now) taught science, and he wrote in my little elementary school annual that they would call me Doctor someday. He was right, of course, but I think he had something else in mind.

I figured somebody was going to bring out the walk-a-mile-in-our-moccasins argument. Fair enough, but I bet it would never happen. I can just imagine how thrilled the parental units would be when they discovered that little Bratley's and/or Snotleigh's class had been conducted by that crazy fucker from over at JasperSucks.Com. There'd be a riot, or at least there *should* be, if the parents still care at all.

Jeff, it sounds as if your school experience was quite horrible. This surprises me, since I thought you went to elementary school at Tate. Tate is and has always been an excellent school. The teachers I work with are dedicated people who went into teaching, not because they couldn't do something more glamorous, but because they genuinely care about children. If you want to know how hard it is to teach these days, with disrespectful students who have learned no manners at home, try substituting one day. You would see things a little differently.

It's not cynicism, BB. I'm just fortunate in that I possess a more complete pattern of facts than most. For example, you can do with this data what you will, but you recently wrote a rant about a certain politician to the Letters to the Editor section of the Pravda.

In that rant, you called out a person who used to be...a teacher at PHS. I leave any discussion as to delusions of grandeur as an exercise for the readership.

And quit worrying about dying, we're all going to die, just some of us more quickly than others. The thing to do is have all your affairs in order, have your will up to date, tell your favorite website what sort of tribute you want so they can have it on hand, that sort of thing...right now, I'm sort of picturing you lying in state in a custom-made coffin shaped like a peanut, but some might fail to see that as the great honor it is and say it was in poor taste, if I had your comments on record on this matter it would probably save some headaches later...

Here, Here, Jeff, I agree 100% about teachers being delusional, so much so that they cause the children they teach more harm than good by getting into the family's business-Pickens is worse than any I have had my childen enrolled in too. In our country we all are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty but in some cases some folks dont need back out on the streets-I have put myself in Danny Ray's position-my child comes to me and says "I have accidentally killed my wife of husband," what to do-but he didnt handle it right either way. Sue Ann was a human being and mother of their grandchild-sitting some people around a grave would have little or no effect at all, Jasper is full of those types-enough said. Hairy I agree with you, politics up here is way too ((((personal))))!!

Hey y'all,

Forget about any and all government run schools if you care for your kids. Indoctrination is part of the game and will never end unless the public ends it. But the general public is not interested in anything but a babysitter so they can do whatever when the kids are kept by others. Uncle sam has encouraged this to no end. After all, if you can train the next generation in the proper manner they will grow up to forget about freedom and agree that the constitution is a "living document' to be interpreted when, where and as the courts see fit.

Home schooled kids are more, intelligent, get along better with others, and have a realistic idea of what life will be about when they get out of school.

Get off your duffs and do your duty to keep your kid straight in mind, body and spirit. It's worth it to them, to you and to your country.

Not all the bus drivers consider the kids 'MY KIDS' though. Don't get me wrong, we have had WONDERFUL drivers, but at the same time, the one we have now could turn the whole bushel sour. (Yep, it's that bad!)

Not a very nice person this bus driver...guess it's the pay, or the lack of, that makes for the nasty attitude.

Maybe I am just tired of my kids coming home sobbing because the driver has decided to go another round. Maybe this driver will grow up and realize after 45 min. to an hour on that bus, these kids are going to get a bit roudy, espically after being in school all day. Chill out a bit and get them home. Sooner you get them home, the sooner you can be rid of them, but cool it on the kids. As if you haven't realized, parents that do care what is going on with their kids DO NOT like for adults to keep on at their children. You should know better, they are still learning...back off a bit.

As someone who has been the victim of public schooling and the randomly directed wrath of your colleagues over the years, I resent your blanket defense of teachers under the guise of failure of perception. It's just as wrong to say they're all good as it is to say they're all bad.

If you truly appreciate the service folks, then that makes you a good person. In making you a good person, it's made you a rarity amongst your peers. I have personally seen the behavior that you're suggesting doesn't exist, and I bet I can find a whole lot more people who have seen it than haven't seen it. It might be useful for the sake of argument to explore what you mean by "appreciate", too. You "appreciate" service workers, but when was the last time you sat down to eat with them, for example? Is it sort of a feel-good I'm-okay-you're-okay egalitarian appreciation, or are there specifics? Have you even examined it?

There's a very small handful of Government School teachers who actually set out to be teachers. The vast majority of them set out to be engineers or doctors or lawyers or anything else, but their mediocrity made certain that they'd have to change majors and then have to fall back on teaching. There are a lot of accredited yet useless degrees out there. This state of affairs leads to individuals who have to get up every morning, waddle into the bathroom, and look at themselves in the mirror while somewhere, deep inside them, a voice reminds them that they wanted to be anything else but what they are. In turn, they get bitter, and they take it out on anybody who can't answer back, which usually means their students or the service workers.

Sure, there are good teachers. I've even had a couple myself. But in the main, I had strutting, screaming martinets with delusions of grandeur, and I have to conclude that they are the majority. If anybody else had a vastly different experience, and had all good teachers with just a smattering of authoritarian assholes, then I'm willing to listen, but if you took a poll I bet most folks who went to school here in Pickens County will report experiences similar to mine.

I thought about that once, and I also gave serious consideration to going to a PHP BBS format, so that everybody could register and post.

Then, I did what I usually do when I have ideas that require work: I went into the kitchen and got myself a Jack and Coke, and I drank Jack and Coke until the urge subsided. That way, I got to feel like I was actually doing something without actually doing anything at all.

Seriously, it's all I can do most days to make myself update the site at all. I used to be gung-ho about it and take a laptop with me and update it from wherever I was, and I've updated it literally from sea to shining sea. Chat capability and instant posting would be cool, but the BBS software usually requires folks to register, and a lot of folks wouldn't post anymore because they're afraid of retribution. A lot of what makes JS cool is that we get whistleblowers who come on anonymously and tell us things we might not otherwise find out.

Doing the board in this format lets me moderate it and keep people from entering posts that look like they just sort of let their cat walk across their keyboard a couple of times, too. Moderation keeps it readable for the most part.

You no i have read the the post on here and I just have to say driving in pickens county has its do's and it'dont's .If your in it for the money then your in trouble. But we all have to say that's the biggest reason we do this. The ins is alot of the reason why people drive up here I know that cherokee co pays more yes but look at how much more they drive than we do.

Also some of us have longer routes with some of us that have shorter routes I think that Pickens co is going to have to get with the times and get it together. There not going to be able to keep it going if they don't . There isnt enough pay there isnt enough buses. But the only way i see anything getting done is if more of us concerned parents drivers etc get together and do something about it. I have seen alot of changes in the transportation dept since i have been up here some good some not so good. But you have to take the good with the bad and go on. I also would like to say they have been good to work for . I know they have had alot on them sometimes. I think in time we will see alot of changes in pickens co not just in the trans dept but in all the school system you no i have to say this and those of you who read this that work here will agree we all work good together we pitch in when we need too and we are there for each other when we need to be NOT every county is like that. Some county's you can go to and see faces you don't even no . So be thankful for that. Have a great day.

One of my favorite stories about bus drivers was from about thirty years ago, back when your kids were still yours as opposed to the system's like they are now. Nowadays, the goddamn government has more say about what goes on in your kids' lives than you do, but that's another story. There was a better time, years ago.

I didn't see this, but I knew some of the people involved and it rings true: A driver had a preschool little girl who was a late-life baby, and as a result, she was the center of the bus driver's world. When she got old enough to toddle, she wasn't having Dad leave the house without her, so he took her and put her on that little space to their left. She was small enough that he could still reach the switches, so all was well. This was years before seat belt laws. Kids generally stood on the back seat and looked out the windows. If you'd have suggested a seat-belt law, they'd have called you a communist.

When the buses would form up at the school at the end of the day, the kids would mill around like kids do outside the buses. The little girl got curious, and her dad let her off the bus to go poke around. It was a small community, there wasn't any harm back then in letting a little one roam a bit. At best, folks would smile, at worst, they'd just ignore the kid.

She turned the corner of the bus, and there was this blustery fuck of an assistant principal, and he started hollering. This scared the shit out of the little girl, and she turned tail and ran. The assistant principal gave chase, right up to the steps of the bus. The little girl swung around her dad and into her perch on the other side from the door.

What made me think of this was your comment that support personnel are ignored or treated as subhuman, because this idiot bastard of an assistant principal actually came up the steps after the little girl and started reaching around the driver like the driver wasn't even there.

The driver responded by knocking the assistant principal out the door with enough force that he didn't touch the steps, landing flat of his back on the pavement. It winded him, and after he got done wheezing, he got up and started screaming at the driver all what he was going to do. The driver, in full-fledged protect-my-baby mode, silently watched like people do who are done talking and ready to fight.

There was an administrative hearing, and the bus driver was cleared of wrongdoing. It came out that he didn't know the bastard he pushed off the bus, but it wouldn't have mattered, back when people took responsibility for their kids. Of course, now he'd probably get fired at best, if they didn't drag him off to jail, because the assumption now is that they own your kids because so many people have cheerfully handed them over. You should hear some of the things people tell me about assumptions the school systems are making. It's scandalous, really.

From: former county employee
Email: somewhere@nowhere.com

You are absolutely right Jeff. As a former bus driver myself I will say that the main reason I drove was because my husband was self employeed and we needed insurance. No the pay is not great, but look at the fact that you are only actually working 3 hours a day. The reason Cherokee County makes more money is they all drive 2 routes (elementary on one, and middle school/high school on the next) and get paid for more hours, whereas the drivers in Pickens County only drive one route, and some of them are only 20-30 minutes long. You can't expect full time wages for a part time job. As for the condition of the buses, that can be blamed on the previous superintendent and other administrators. If you go back and look at back issues of the Pickens Progress, they listed in there everything that the 1st splost vote (I believe it was 2001) was to be used for. In addition to a new bus shop, 10 new buses were supposed to have been bought and paid for within the next 5 years(which would be this year). Yes, even though some new buses were purchased, if you do some close checking you will see they were done on a lease/purchase deal instead of being paid for. There are buses that are still on the roads that are 16 to 20 years old. If you want something done about it, you need to hold the administration accountable for not doing what they had promised the taxpayers they would do. But I guess the safety of our children takes low priority over having a new media center at JES. I no longer work for the transportation department. In my opinion, it is one of the worst working environments I have ever worked in. If everyone would just come in, do their job and go home it would be fine. But there are to many people who are more concerned with everybody else's business. It is one of the worst places for gossip that I have ever seen in my life. Not to say that everybody out there is like that. I made some lasting friendships that I will always treasure.

Yes it is a hard job with very little rewards. Bus drivers, custodians, and lunch room workers are and always have been at the bottom of the food chain in the school system and are treated as such by the upper echelon of administrators and the teachers are the first ones to look down their noses at you. But if you like working with children, it can be very satisfying to go home at the end of the day and know that you did your job well and that I got MY KIDS (because that's what I considered them) home safely. And if you think about it, when you smile and say good morning to a child, and then smile and say bye, I'll see you in the morning, remember that that may be the 1st kind word said to that child since you dropped him off at home the day before and the last kind word he will hear until the next morning.

Why the age of the county matters is that there are several branches of Gov-Federal-which is W. Bush and his crew of cutthroat Reps-then there is State, which consists of Baldy Bubba Perdue and his benefit stealing Reps-while a county such as Pickens must abide GA laws there is still local Gov- county, that is Robert Jones, Billy Wofford anyone in Pickens County who doesnt have to answer to City Gov which would be Boss Hog and that crew. While Jones has to abide by Ga Law he also can make certain things different in many areas-while Boss is supposed to abide by both GA law and County rules and regulations-he can still enact certain city laws too.

Now, you see there lies the problem when all these folks cant get along for various reasons which can be anything from disliking someone in high school to having dated each others wives when single-to jealousy and downright meaness-If any of that or something else happens that cause the levels to disagree it will be taken all the way up the chain of command and that takes along time, meanwhile whoever is up to no good has that much longer to get around the law--GET IT NOW. The age is how everyone holds grudges and knows each other-and while you fear the devil,it is still human nature to prefer a devil you know over a devil that you dont know.

About bus driver pay, I don't know if it's still the same, but pay wasn't the issue back when I knew folks who drove school buses. The big draw for a lot of folks to bus driving was insurance.

There used to be quite a few folks who raised chickens or had some other sort of home enterprise going on that supplied them with income, but as health care costs soared, insurance got to be a bigger and bigger deal. Bus drivers weren't paid a lot but they were eligible for benefits, and folks would get insurance that way.

I'll take that question, Jeff.

Theoretically, What's Next, you are correct that no inherent right to special exemption from laws or special creation of laws exists. Realistically, the reason many people in Pickens receive special treatment is that those family names make them a part of the not-so-underground good ol' boy system that exists in Pickens County. This system extends itself to the local politics of property, schools, businesses, even crimes such as a great deal of the drug problem in Pickens.

You can't tell me that some people aren't protected by local authorities in relation to the clandestine activities.

What does the age of Pickens County have to do with it's laws? What seperates it from the other counties and the laws there. From what I can see Pickens has its own laws whereas other counties are more in the now and not the 1800's and comply with the state when creating their laws. I am aware of the old names of families living in the area but that is in every county in the USA. My mother was from the Smith/Cook family and it goes all the way back to England and when the settlers came to the US; but that does not give me any special reasonings for doing what I want does it?

The problem was not sight seers but four wheelers coming from all the surrounding counties and going over on the acreage owned by the Tate Estate between Long Swamp Creek and Cove Road. Sandy Bottom has been a known place for drugs. The auction held several years ago did not attract any developers to build a gated community because of the costs and no roads from 53 probably didn't help either. Now I hear that the Darnell place was sold and will be an esquestion ranch of some sort. I hear all of the property along Sandy Bottom is for sell now too. It would make a nice subdivison in the local Tate area.

How is the parimutual betting going to help with the horse races at Red Bird Way? Do they plan to use Sandy Bottom Road as a racetract now that the have it gated off?

I saw the gate the other day, and wondered about that myself...of course, if you grew up here like I did you know that gate is useless, and that's primarily why I wondered about it. The only theory I have is that sight-seers from out of the area have been driving off down in there and getting stuck, and somebody got tired of digging them out.

Also take into consideration what "county road" means in Pickens County, and by that I mean "very little". There are some county roads that the county doesn't really have the right to cut the grass on, because it was given to the county as only a few feet on either side of a line. Remember how old Pickens County is, and remember that most all the roads were deeded out when there weren't nearly so many cars. It may be that the county doesn't even own that road, because if memory serves it may have been part of that 700+ acres that was sold off the old Tate Estate a couple of years back, in which case the county probably didn't put the gate up at all, it might be that the current owners did. All this is speculation, of course, but if you really want to know, you could look up at the Courthouse, the aerial view alone would probably tell the tale.

That's the basis of my comment about a "banker" versus somebody sitting behind a desk. It's the same distinction between a master ballplayer and a benchwarmer. A banker takes the time to know you, your folks, and most importantly, do you pay...as somebody who occasionally buys bank stock, it matters to me especially in a new bank that there is at least one True Banker on board.

New banks are usually started by frustrated talent who got tired of the benchwarmers riding on their coat-tails. In 1999, I bought a hundred shares of a bank that hadn't even been built yet that was to be called "Unity National Bank". The shares of this not-yet-extant bank were ten dollars each. Today, they're worth thirty each and UNB has three branches in addition to the main office. I should have had my ass kicked for not taking them more seriously, but I wouldn't have bought at all if my grandfather hadn't hauled me to an organizational meeting. He bought big, and it paid off for him. He died a multimillionaire.

When Community Bank was forming, I was tied up in something else and couldn't participate. That is one of the biggest business regrets I have.

No, an old bank like JBC won't retain talent, and if they hire and train talent from scratch they'll still bail out for a better deal, and that's why I say JBC is living off what used to be. Sorry, but I don't make the rules, I just call 'em like I see 'em.

I open my first account there at fourteen and actually had a joint savings account there since 1965. When I was sixteen I had a job and needed a car, so I went and seen ole Mark and with Grandad cosigning I got $800. Over the next 20 years I had probably 30 loans, a business account, my personnal account(s) and even a couple of CDs. I did business with guys named Jerry, Brian, James, and a gal named Geri and was a very satisified customer. When I went in I told them what I needed, we came to terms, they deposited the monies in my account and I payed on time or paid off early in many instances.

Then, in 1999 or 2000 I walked in to do business as usual and got the business from someone whos name now escapes me. Mind you, in 20 or so years JBC had never had to do a credit check on me because they knew ME. My word, signature and handshake was better than any "collateral" they could get from anyone, anywhere because that's how I was raised. Well, this "banker" required it and since I had went through a divorce a few years earlier I had a few indiscretions on my record.( None of which affected JBC in anyway.)

Seems that after 20 years of business they now wanted me to again have a cosigner. I walked out mad as hell and after calming down I came back and spoke to the president. His response to me was,"thats just how we do it now" to which my reply was "then let me show you how I do it now!" I closed 2 accounts, pulled 2 CDs, emptied my safe deposit box and haven't darkened the door way again.

The bottom line for me was, when they were a "community" bank and treated you as an individual, JBC was the best in anywhere. If, I'm going to be treated like an account number then I might as well go to a big, multi-branch bank who has more to offer...

There was and still are some good folks at JBC but, somewhere along the way they lost their heart and that personnal touch that set them apart...

So much for any debate about whether or not the banks read here. Hi, JBC.

Let's put the ad hominem sledgehammer down for a minute, shall we? Good. Yeah, I've got a reason, and I'm glad you asked. Climb on up in old Uncle Jeff's lap. Uncle Jeff is gwyne ta tells ya a sto-ry.

When I was eighteen years old, I needed four hundred dollars. Bad. I had a checking account at JBC that I'd had since I was fifteen, and I banked there because my mother did.

I went in to see this loan guy named Mike. Mike had never seen me before, but he understood that I needed the four hundred dollars. We made a deal on the interest and terms, I signed a note, and he cut me a check. That was the first loan transaction out of dozens, and as time went by they got well up into the thousands.

Mike left to go pursue other opportunities, so I started working with a woman named Geri, and it was business as usual.

Then one day I needed several thousand dollars again, so I went to see Geri. Alas, no Geri. Geri had taken off to start another bank along with every *real* banker in the building. They no longer had loan officers, in short. They had toys, though. One room (Frank Eubanks' old office) was full of these battery-operated, swinging, twisting, chiming toys. However, I didn't need toys. I needed a banker.

The Keeper of the Toys was the closest thing, so I requested the loan. However, the Keeper of the Toys couldn't help me. He wasn't a banker, as it turned out. Sure, he had an office and a title, but wasn't a banker at all.

Let Uncle Jeff try to explain the difference in a way you can understand: On the road, every car has someone behind the steering wheel. All of those folks are referred to as "drivers". However, in reality, what you have is a certain small percentage of *real* drivers, and the rest are actually what *should* be called "Steering Wheel Holders". They're not driving, not really. They're really just holding the steering wheel, and hoping for the best.

See, that's how it was at JBC after the real bankers left. Folks like me who suddenly couldn't get anything done anymore had to go somewhere else, so I did.

JBC was the first bank to ever lend me money. If they'd treated me right, and like the customer I'd always been, I'd have still been with them. I'm a brand name guy, anyway, and I am not fickle in the least. When I could get decent treatment both on the loans and as a person one day, and the next day I couldn't, and for reasons beyond my control, it felt like a betrayal. It did, and it still does.

In regard to the aspersions you've anonymously cast upon my character, JBC never hunted me a day for a dime. They always knew what was going on and they knew I was good for it. Basically, and overnight, we went from treating Uncle Jeff like a valued customer to shifting him off on the Keeper of the Toys just because we felt like it, and Uncle Jeff wasn't having it. I had a track record with them and I had earned the right to be treated like the calibre of customer that I was. Imagine having a friend or trusted partner slam their front door in your face, and you'll have a good start at an idea of how I felt.

I'm not going to jump back on you or say horrible things to you like you've tried to do to me, because frankly you're not very good at it. Helpful hint: Next time, don't say you're sure somebody has better things to do than read my stupid website, because you read it yourself and the implication is that you have nothing better to do, either. I probably am not as smart as I think I am, but who is?

And who certifies idiots, anyway?

From: OR's gal

Jeff,

What do you have against JBC? Your credit not good enough to get a loan or have a checking account??? There must be some reason.

And...I'm sure that the employees at JBC have better things to do than read your stupid website.

Now, about one of the *wonderful* banks that you talk about...you should ask somebody who knows what underhanded stuff they did as they were getting their bank started!! A real bunch of winners!

People like you deserve to have someone like them as bankers and friends. With friends like them, who needs enemies?? You're not half as smart as you think you are. You are a certified idiot.

Me & Lay Preacher don't care about no bank buddies, jeff, BB bull, mayors or other politickers, cause we going to bang a good one tonight right after choir practice. We going to sing up a storm first and it won't be about what comes up here on JS.

Forget about Jasper and that great big sucking sound that comes from city hall most of the time. Let it all hang out and get with it when you can. Hope my husband don't ever find out why I like Church so much. Lay Preacher don't have to worry none about such things cause he left his last one down in Floridy after he got all her money so we can live high.

You are also correct about the "grass roots" campaign effort being for shit. Elections today, at any level, are bought and not won on merit. Hell, its not even a popularity contest anymore!

BB, as for mud slinging I know some dirt on ole Johnny myself and I'm sure the regulars here can add plenty more! Oh well...guess we can save that for another day. From: Jeff
Email: jeff@jaspersucks.com

You'd be surprised. And don't mix up my statements, if you go back and read I said you're that crazy fucker up PC road to the political establishment, not to the banks. I'm not going to "out" anybody, but I know for a fact that senior management at both of the better banks read here. I do business with one and it's particularly gratifying to go in and see the familiar JS colors and layout on somebody's computer screen in there. I know the other one does because folks from there have seen me at social functions and have come up to me laughing about first one thing and then another that's been said on here. I'm nobody to be kissing up to, they didn't read a few pages just to impress or please me, they'd actually been following whatever story was unfolding here on JS.

There's plenty of readers from JBC, too, most of whom are good and pissed off about being called somebody's lap dogs, or at least that was the general impression I got from all the email messages. Nobody there is going to admit knowing you from here because I'm not very popular there right now, not that it matters. They can bitch to my advertisers. Maybe even organize a boycott. I don't care if anybody reads JS, and never did.

Now, about the other, you might remember that when all that business happened with the littering charge, it was me who offered you the first hundred bucks for your defense. I took you at your word as to how it went down. I knew that nobody could build a case on that shit, and that one shouldn't have been made, but so did the folks who really mattered out at the SO. As it happened, I personally believe that after having heard everybody's side of this, that if you'd have been a little bit more patient, cooler heads would have prevailed. The management out at the S.O. knows what they're doing, believe it or not. Rather than go nuts and leave them no wiggle room, it might have been better to give them time to discover the error. Once you countered and then started that campaign that ended in your being ordered to stop by the Court, there was nothing for them to do but ride it out.

You're not that crazy fucker up PC road because of me or anything *I've* said. You're that crazy fucker up PC road because during the period of time they were involved with you, it wasn't that far off the mark as a description, at least to an independent observer. And you didn't win, you lost. You lost because you failed to handle things with the sort of poise and rationality that could have gotten the whole thing blown off before it had properly begun, and even though you didn't have to pay a fine, you were out time and trouble that would have been much better spent making a living or fucking off or *anything* instead of sitting in a courtroom and waiting for your case to be called.

I wouldn't put up with the Sheriff's Department fucking with people for nothing, and damn if I don't think you ought to let this go. You don't seem to know when to stop and frankly, past a point, you'll end up engaging in the same sort of shit you're accusing them of, that being using the courts to carry out a private campaign of harassment. Your time and resources are yours to spend as you wish, but I have to tell you that if you take a deep breath and try to be a little bit objective, you might see that there are things you'd much rather be doing.

From: BubbaBob
Email: bubbabob@jaspersucks.com

So I'm BubbaBob from JS. So? That's supposed to impress anyone? To quote your post below, "Poor BB is still "that crazy fucker up Price Creek Road" to them at this point because of his wacky courtroom adventure."

By the way...two things about those "wacky courtroom adventures".

First, you could at least note that I won. The Superior Court of Pickens County found I was not guilty despite the best efforts of Officer Osborne, Alan Wigginton, Chief Magistrate Ray, and Judge Cardin.

Second, the "wacky courtroom adventures" are not over. Far from it. As a matter of fact, in all probability the next chapter will start being written next week.

The main thing that sucks about jasper for me is watching it turn into the place I left almost ten years ago.In my hometown growing up,every house had a garden and everyone knew each other.
That changed very quickly. Now it is full of redlights, drugstores, stripmalls, subdivisions, crime and people that don't speak my language.

To bubbabob,

I now patronize the kroger, home depot, chinese restaraunt, and dos margaritas III. I however, never went to hardware stores in town or the peublo grill. (When I needed hardware supplies, I hit the home depot in canton, simply because I could not deal with the 'oh you're a woman what do you know' attitude I got in Jasper)

Tried the peublo grill once when it first came out, I got sick. I don't go back when I get sick on the food.

I'd shop at the pig, only because it was the closest to my house and I didn't plan to get it on the way home from work. And the kroger has things they don't.

Scott chan's is a place I'd go to when my folks insisted. I don't like tofu in my egg drop soup, the new place doesn't use any. So before that I went out of town.

So what these new businesses have done is just keep my money in Jasper for a change.

From: BubbaBob

Escapee, there are several reasons your "BubbaBob for Mayor" ain't gonna happen:

1. Despite the fact that Weaver would love to annex all of Pickens Co. into the city limits of Jasper, so far 7 miles out Burnt Mountain Rd remains safe from his clutches...that means I'm not a resident and thus don't qualify.

2. Given the tone of most political races this day and time I'm sure that given my background in a previous life, less than 10 minutes after I announced my candidacy if I WERE able to run, there would be more dirt dug up on me than was moved off of the old jail site.

3. I wouldn't want the job. Do you really think I would want to be the subject of all the bitching here on JS and elsewhere? I've been involved in politics in the past, as a candidate and otherwise. The days when I desired to hold elected office are LONG past.

4. What makes you think I am qualified? I'm just a dumb redneck wannabe farmer that sells peanuts on the side of the road.

Thanks but no thanks...but if you really want to write a check, send money to Jasper Banking Company, attn Kay Fowler, for deposit to an account named "The Workshop", a non-profit residential alcohol and drug rehab facility myself and some other folks in the area are trying to establish.

Jeff, whaddya mean if I told them who I *really* was? Who am I *really*? See number 4 above.

See y'all at the peanut stand.

Sure, Tink. BB displayed his incredible grasp of subtlety here.

A lot of folks have made positive comments about the graphics I've put together whenever there's been a tragedy in the area. I figure I'll win an actual award when BB finally cacks it. I won't say I've started work on it yet, but I have some definite ideas.

I'm gonna do it up right, might as well, folks will expect it. Conventional wisdom around here is that BB and I are part of some vast Internet-based plot to bring Chaos upon Pickens County, and it hasn't done any good for me to point out that I don't even know who BB is past the guy who sells peanuts in Tate. I'm sure there's a handful of folks who think that JS is *his* board.

Escapee, I'm sure you meant "near-demise", because if things go like they did last time I'd have gotten a phone call by now. In some circles, I'm considered his next-of-kin.

To borrow a political phrase from a couple of cycles ago, it "wouldn't be prudent" to run BB for office. As much as it would tickle me to see that happen, both for what it would do to the City of Jasper *and* to BB, I think I'll pass.

I'm *already* notorious. They worry what *I'll* do. Poor BB is still "that crazy fucker up Price Creek Road" to them at this point because of his wacky courtroom adventure. Admittedly, they wouldn't begin to take him seriously until he became a real threat, but to get in that game you've got to have financial backing and the money people won't take him seriously, either. That whole "grass roots effort" bullshit is just that. Those election signs won't print themselves, and neither do the newspaper ads. How much is it now, a couple thousand bucks, to even register to run?

Nah. As much fun as it might be to watch a human being attempt to implode from sheer hubris, I've got other fish to fry, too.

BubbaBob you ever think you might be fighting a losing battle and somewhere else might be your eutopia. Goes to show the Universe flips at times and not always in the most just ways.

Avoid our cops if you can that is my best advice. Bubba Bob land is really cheap over toward SC and its in the mountains as well-you could sell what you have here and buy way more there-people everywhere love boiled peanuts.

Might I interject a little observations that I have made. The people who live here dont really much want alot of new folks and the new folks, while some are right nice-tend to want to talk down to us at times-they are looking for Mayberry RFD-while we do have alot of Goobers and Goomers, we are running a quart low on Andys. The Aunt Beas up here are powerful tale toters -they can tote a tale faster than a plate of chicken to Cagle's Funeral Home when someone dies. Our Aunt Beas know your business way before you do and dont care one bit to embellish it little for you either. So what we have going on here is the real verses the wished or imagined.

Other thing I wanted to comment on is this-the Murder of Leo Frank- he was the one who was alledged to have killed little Mary Fagan back in the early 1900's at a pencil factory between Marietta and Atlanta. Later a black man was found to have been the probable perp.

Jew or Black-oh well they got the right one in their estimations. There is a song for Mary Fagan-I have heard it many times and she is at rest in the big city cemetary in Marietta.

Last but not least we got us way more Barneys than we need, some of them act like they are on some of that Viagra (wink) if you get my meaning.

wow, local business around here really is going to shit, isn't it? I walked into the shiny new huddle house on the east end of 53 and waited 20 minutes for two eggs and hashbrowns. And there was only one other customer in the store. AND they charged me for the glass of water I drank...

And what's up with the chevron out there being open all night during the week, but closing on the weekends? Wouldn't you WANT to stay open on the weekends because, er, maybe that's when people stay out all night? That can be a dangerous situation if there's an emergency and you forget to fill up your tank before you go home.

Oh, but don't think that my rant is contained to the east side of PC. Try getting decent service at the mcdonalds in jasper. Hell, try getting any during third shift. I had to lay down on the horn for a solid minute to get anyone to come to the window, and then it was someone that didn't even work there supposedly, and then they kept asking me repeatedly if it WAS actually a quarter pounder with cheese I wanted.

Ah, but if you DO want someone to pay attention to you, go on down to kroger, where loiterers and employees alike will sit out front and heckle and taunt you.

I don't know how to word how I feel, but the closest thing would be that I get just a general sense of people not caring for anyone or anything around here. Is it just in this area or am I naively missing it absolutely everywhere else?

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! I am laughing my ass off at you Jasper Drug Store comments, Jeff. I'm sure the Dunns would love to have a monopoly on pharmaceuticals in Jasper. Go back a few decades, and they basically did. Their only competition was the Rexall Drug Store (where part of Moore Furniture now is). Of course, the Rexall had a great lunch counter and soft-serve vanilla ice-cream that makes other soft-serve pale in comparison.
That tidbit aside, who really cares about the Dunns? They are another overrated Pickens County family who, in the vast scheme of things, are ants like the rest of us. A lot of business owners in Jasper (past and present) are snobs, so who wants to do business with them anyway?
That's one of the things about Jasper in general, people make their insignificant little lives seem important if they own a business or have any amount of money. Even churches are in the competition. When the Jasper United Methodist sanctuary burned, it was necessary for the congregation to rebuild. Do you think Jasper First Baptist and Mt.Zion were going to be left behind? Hell no!
JFB added a new sanctuary, and Mt. Zion tore down a perfectly good, beautiful structure just to flaunt wealth in the face of Pickens Countians? Is that what church is all about? I think not! Is that what God is all about? By no means! What a bunch of bullshit!

The runoff was destroying his lake and flooding his garden and Mr.Atlanta developer ran Grandad off his property when he approached him about it. Well, Rick and the EPA gets involved and after a warning and a subsequent fine of $10,000 he got the message!

Two women were playing golf One teed off and watched in horror as her ball headed directly toward a foursome of men playing the next hole.

The ball hit one of the men. He immediately clasped his hands together at his groin, fell to the ground and proceeded to roll around in agony.

The woman rushed down to the man, and immediately began to apologize "Please allow me to help. I'm a physical therapist and I know I could relieve your pain if you'd allow me," she told him.

"Oh, no, I'll be all right. I'll be fine in a few minutes," the man replied. He was in obvious agony, lying in the fetal position, still clasping his hands together at his groin. At her persistence, however, he finally allowed her to help. She gently took his hands away and laid them to the side, loosened his pants and put her hands inside. She administered tender and artful massage for several long moments and asked, "How does that feel?"

He replied, "It feels great ......but my thumb still hurts like hell."

Jeff, I suppose I mistyped as well. I should have typed "such a scenario," meaning that which led to Sue Ann's murder or such a scenario involving anyone abused. Such scrutiny should come from local law enforcement authorities and agencies such as DFACS.

Any man who lifts a finger to harm any woman or child should be dealt with in a swift and efficient manner so that he is permanently removed as a threat to them.

Hey you know it alls, know-nothings, whackos, dingbats and various others

Progressive Farmer has been around longer than any of y'all. Direct from Birmingham Alabamy since shortly after the Civil War (Since 1866) We used to get it when we were 'regressive farmers' up in Yankeeland.

By the way, this is a Christian web site. I qualify that statement by reading what Church Lady and Lay Preacher have to say on occasion.

On the local Pravda and news media in general, I feel it is OK to talk about the + & - of a case, but do not feel it is fair to publish photos, etc prior to conviction.

I don't even think we should talk about Mayor Weaver moving to the moon to get out of his earthly problems, but that's only my two dollars worth. (It used to be 2 cents but you know inflation, etc.)

Okay, I've looked at the article in the Pravda and at the information quoted. Most interesting is the methodology they used to compile the list. The way I read it, they pulled a bunch of numbers straight from OnBoard LLC (another website), shoved the numbers into their asses, jumped up and down, and then pulled out the then-completed list of communities.

We should be neither pleased nor displeased, considering the source and methodology. I mean, had you ever heard of this organization before? Progressive Farmer? Sounds like some sort of communistic thing to me, but of course we *did* hear it about it from the Pickens Pravda, official publication of the Pickens Politburo.

If you're the sort that likes to laugh about how stupid your fellow residents are, read the Letters to the Editor. If, like me, you didn't really want to know how bad it was, skip that part. There's some woman going on and on about how we shouldn't have so many drug stores, not because it might be better to attract a diversity of different services, but because since we *allowed* too many drugstores it might be making Jasper Drug Store sad. Think about how Jasper Drug Store feels, she enjoins us.

Let me go on the record as saying that I don't give a *fuck* how Jasper Drug Store feels, no more than they care how I feel. It's a business entity in business to make money. It can either survive by offering great service and satisfaction, or it can close. This is the way it happens in the really real world, here on the third planet from the unsmiling sun.

Lesson learned: Avoid the Letters to the Editor in the Pravda.

There's a plaque within walking distance of my office that marks the spot where Cobb County elected officials hung a man named Leo Frank because a majority of folks decided "he needed killin'". He wasn't sentenced in a court of law to death, just in the court of public opinion, so they hung him. That spirit still bubbles beneath the surface of the Cobb County psyche even now. I see it every day.

It turned out that Leo Frank wasn't guilty of anything but being a minority. The trouble with killing folks, in my experience, is mainly that you can't bring them back if it turns out you were wrong.

I remember when the City of Atlanta tried Richard Jewell in the court of public opinion and were ready to execute him, too, for no other reason that they needed a sacrifice in order to appease the gods of commerce and keep money flowing into the city during the Olympics. It didn't matter that he was innocent. The City Too Busy To Hate is one hateful place if it suits their purposes.

Think also about all the folks released from prison after years and years because the DNA evidence exonerated them. What if we'd killed them?

I think that if Ray killed her, he will be tried, convicted, and punished. That's what our system does, when it works. It may not be as emotionally satisfying as a good public hanging, but it is the right thing to do. Case in point: If you could hang Ray for this, right now, but it meant you'd never find out if he had accomplices and that they would get away scot-free, would you do it? No. The wheels of justice grind slow, but it's important that they get every single grain.

There couldn't have been any "unidentified informants" if he'd done this alone.

I'm curios about a few things in it...1) A 4 star rating for least crime (guess they didn't hear about the "mad meth epidemic" and all the associated crime) 2) A 2 star for pollution..(must've road by Bubba Bobs house!) just kiddin' big guy..3) A 1 star for education..(alas, some things never change)

Perhaps I misspoke, then.

Without taking anything away from the case, I'm sure SueAnn herself would prefer that you spent whatever energies or resources you had to spend on her daughter, who has effectively been orphaned by this situation. I respect that everybody's different, but if somebody got the jump on me and I died, as a father I'd prefer that somebody realized I was gone and quickly moved to comfort my kids in whatever way they could.

Everybody will have their own, individual take on this. I can't help but be reminded of that line out of Matthew, let the dead bury their dead or something like that, and the rest of you take care of the living, which seems to me to mean (at least in this case) the little girl. If you believe anything at all, most major religions preach that when you die you go to a better place and suffering ceases. SueAnn's little girl still suffers the loss of her mother...how does a kid come back from a thing like that?

I'm curious, also, as to why you feel the scenario must be "scrutinized relentlessly". It's a little too familiar as it is, or so it seems to me. I'd wager that everybody in the county knows at least one couple where this could end up being the result. There's no point in holding poor SueAnn up as an example, as the situation was far from unique.

From: InTheKnow
Email: Private

Jeff, I must respectfully disagree with your opinion that it doesn't matter how Sue Ann Ray wound up murdered. It does, and the reason is because the murder was the culminating act in a line of abuse and manipulation.

Yes, it is too late for anyone to save Sue Ann Ray's life; and, yes, people should pay attention to the child. The scenario itself, however, should be scrutinized relentlessly, for it allows us to view the terror many men inflict upon the women they supposedly love.

Many women endure untold verbal and physical abuse at the hands of men from whom they feel there is no escape. Most of those women do not realize they have recourse if they would only come forward.

Sue Ann Ray's entire story needs to be told so that we, even in our tiny community, realize capabilities of animals like the one who murdered Sue Ann.

ME, I hear you about the little one, that's what gets me, too. It seems like it's always the little ones who suffer. As far as the accused, let's let the folks who handle that sort of thing deal with it. As a community, it seems much more constructive to try to do something for the child (like drop a buck or two into the education account they've set up for her) than it does to get all worked up over how we *think* it happened and start projecting our own fears or experiences into it. In the end, it doesn't matter, there's one more motherless child, and nothing is going to bring Mother back. If you've got any resources, I've found it's best to try to look out after the ones left behind.

I knew from the start of all this he had bad intentions. You could see it in his eyes. Look at him, he has evil in him. For him to be able to do this to Sue Ann, and to his own daughter...well that sums it up for me.

I can hear him telling her, "If I can't have you, nobody will." I'll even go as far to say he thought he could 'bully' her into what he wanted. I just don't understand why men like him think this way. He is a selfish, evil being that doesn't deserve to be here to see what effect his actions will have on his own daughter. He doesn't even deserve the attention he is getting now. Men like him remind me of those evil spirits that lurk in the shadows of the horror movies.

I pray every day for the baby who doesn't really understand what's happening to her, and why her mommy isn't home. I also pray he will pay his dues for the pain and suffering he has inflicted on this family. Also, I pray all who is involved will get what they deserve as well.

I believe everyone knew the estranged husband was involved. Who else really had a motive, and how often are people randomly abducted in this area? I do, however, believe in premonitions. I believe we are often warned of events in our lives in order to help prepare us for those events. I've had a couple of experiences of my own, Psychic Chic, and my great-grandmother had soem profound experiences.

People often scoff at such claims, but I believe they are gifts. I just don't understand how anyone could harm another human being. Even the thought of inflicting pain without serious injury makes me squeamish.

I knew he was involved, but I wasn't sure how many more were. Just goes to show there is no way to stage the perfect crime. Once my best friend was killed by her husband long long ago. She had a new baby at the time, I knew she was going to die, but I paid no attention to my thoughts about it. I had dreams, thought I heard her screaming, even went to the door to see if she was screaming one night. You just never listen to your gutt when you are young because people tell you that you cant know things ahead of time. I promise you that you can. I was in on the aftermath, we looked for the baby in some awful places when her brother found her body one morning. Luckily, he didnt kill his own child like Entwistle up in New England-that baby is grown and has babies-her mother would have made a wonderful grandmother too. Due to this tradgedy she lost both parents that day more or less-he was put in prison, escaped twice and killed himself on the final escape. I grew up with both of them, I would never have thought such a thing would happen in that family or any family even though I had premonitions about it. I think people should listen to gutt feelings and dreams that are too vivid.

I'm sorry to hear about that woman, SueAnn Ray. And you're right UJ. Not only did that poor little girl lose her mommy, she lost her daddy too. Even if he is the murder.

Little kids don't "completely" (key word here folks)understand things like that. They may know that something is wrong, and people they love may have done something wrong. But death is something hard for a child to grasp. Hell, it's hard for an adult to grasp. But "I" (my opinion only!) believe that doesn't mean a damn thing to them. The bottom line is, the two people in this world that she loved and trusted the most, are now forever taken away from her. That's difficult to handle as an adult. I can't phantom how that would feel for a child.

Rest in peace, lady.

And before any of you start on me about how she deserved it over a custody dispute, remember that there's a little girl involved here who knew Sue Ann as "Mommy", and to paraphrase a line out of a movie, "Mommy" is the name of God in the hearts and on the lips of little kids. Poor little thing probably won't ever be able to sort it all out.

You lovers of the English language might enjoy this

There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is "UP."

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?

We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP.

When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP. When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP.

One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP, so... time to shut UP...!

Ooooookkkk! I perused the Planet-X phantom planet website. I say "Bunk!"

When the stock market crashed in 1929, people thought the world was coming to an end. When Adolf Hitler came to power, people thought he was the Anti-Christ. When JFK had his 1962 showdown with the Soviets, people thought it was all over. Y2K was supposed to set us back to the stone age. And 5/5/2005 was supposed to precipitate a shifting of the poles.

This website is simply another apocalyptic ride from the doomsayers.

Oh, for those of you who want to give it a try, phone your credit card company. Tell them that you have a zero percent offer (you really don't) from another company (be sure to have a name on hand), and that you're going to have to shift your balance and close your account if they can't offer you as good a deal. They won't know you're bluffing, and chances are, you'll end up with a lower rate or some sort of deal with which you can lower your payments.

ITK, I was more curious about the folks who *didn't* have an easy fix for their problems. I have to conclude that there's a good portion of the populace that doesn't have the luxury of transferring to a zero balance, especially since a lot of those deals have dried up since October. I used to get five a day, now it's two a week.

Talk to me, people. You're anonymous, and I'm more interested in the data than in shaming you. The preliminary data suggests that some of you are screwed to the wall on this, and I want to know more because it has implications for the economy. I'm very concerned with some ugly things that are happening, in particular the devaluation of the currency that nobody is talking about. They weren't willing to let housing prices collapse because of the panic that would cause, and instead they've chosen to devalue the currency. Anybody looked at gold prices lately? All these things are interrelated.

Again, on the credit card issue, if there is any way your credit is fit enough to transfer to a zero percent card, do so.

If your APR is low enough, you will only be required to pay 2 percent of the balance each month because with a low APR, you are paying a good bit of principal.

High APR's go to 4 percent of the balance each month because at 2 percent, little or no principal is being paid.

If you transfer to a zero percent and keep your payments current, you can pay no interest for up to 15 months.

Big Debo, I know that you can't change from being heterosexual. I don't want you to change. Trust me, if there is any way in this world that I could have changed or still could change to be a heterosexual man, I would do it in a heartbeat! My life would be five million times easier! And I know that my postings are probably hard to take for various reasons. Quite honestly, I'm not posting anything about homosexuality to offend you or to offend anyone else, but my sexuality has given me a lot of perspectives on life I wouldn't have otherwise. I know what it's like to be hated for something that is beyond my control. I know what it is like to be an outsider. I know what it is like to fear losing the love of family and friends because of an aspect of myself that I can't change. You know, this isn't something I chose as a grown man. As soon as I hit puberty at the age of 13, I knew I liked other males. I prayed for almost 14 years for God to change me, and I dated girls and women in high school and college. Was I hetero then? No. I was just trying to fit in. It didn't work.

I finally had to accept myself, and accepting myself was harder for me to do than for any heterosexual to accept me. And you know, there are so many aspects of life that I have missed because I'm gay. I love kids, but I'll never be a father. I can't be open with my family about any love relationship. I can't really go out to dinner or date anyone openly in Jasper. Believe me, to have been hetero and been able to do all the things most people do would have been a blessing. The bottom line is that I'm just not attracted to women and to pretend to be attracted to a woman and marry her just so that I could fit into society, to live a lie with a woman, would have been or would be much worse than being gay ever could be.

Yes, Incognito, you were quoting from my message. I'm not the person who misinterpreted that fact. I still believe that people who can't afford to raise kids shouldn't have them.

Is that judgmental? Yes, but quite frankly I don't care. Since I started posting on this board, I've had enough mud slung my way to fill an in-ground pool.

As for you, Big Debo, you're just too mindless to grasp anything other than your own unintelligent rantings. The majority of homosexual people don't raise kids, yet a large population of homosexual men and lesbian women, who grew up with heterosexual parents, exists. That puts a bit of a kink in your theory, doesn't it?

Heterosexual parents don't always produce heterosexual kids, and gay parents usually don't produce gay kids. I don't know any gay men or women whose parents were openly gay or who have come out of the closet as gay. I do know several gay men and women who have children (from erroneous marriages) who have children who are heterosexual.

You need to expand your ability to think logically, Debo, if you can actually think at all. The world doesn't exist as you see it, and your greatest downfall is your own ignorance.

What do you do for a living, work at Waffle House?

From what I understand, the monthly percentage you must pay on your credit card is directly tied to your APR; thus, credit card companies are zapping it to anyone who is late with a payment, even once.

The higher your APR, the higher percentage of the total balance your monthly payment must be (2% to 4%).

My Bank of America card posted my payments late twice in a six-month period.  This was due to the date they claimed they received payment, even though I had mailed both payments in ample time for them to arrive by the due date.  Bank of America raised my interest rate to over 31%.

I simply transferred to a zero percent interest card and closed the Bank of America account.

Credit card companies are out to get as many people in their trap as possible.

Jerry,

You are a very easy person to "read"! Your pitiful existence is so miserable; you want everyone around you to be just as miserable. Since you have given up on your own redemption, it has become your mission in life to attack anyone and everyone around you who is seeking their own redemption. Not only that, you resent anyone who even prays for a person in trouble seeking help. You just can't bear the fact that someone might crawl out of the hole they have dug for themselves and leave you alone at the bottom of the pit! HEY JERRY, CAN YOU HEAR ME WAY DOWN THERE!

From: Jeff

Well, it *is* ingrained, I'll give you that. I'm not in a position to chastise anybody for courseness, though, not when I'm arguably the worst of the lot.

I suppose it says more about me than it does about my surroundings, but people *always* raised hell like that. I remember being in fourth grade down at Tate Elementary and hearing it, and doing it myself. There used to be a baseball diamond laid out down by what used to be the Gym, and we'd play ball down there during recess. I remember people striking out and screaming "FUCK!" We were maybe nine years old or so, I can't remember how old I was in the fourth grade.

Fast forward to high school, same story, except we came up with incredibly mean shit to say to one another. Rather than being satisfied with the vulgarity of the words themselves, we started playing with combinations and phrasings. Folks who were particularly good at this were treated with respect, as if they were some sort of poet.

Shortly after that, I was in the Air Force, and it wasn't uncommon in the beginning of that period of time to have somebody hanging over in your face screaming curse words at you in lieu of a "Good Morning".

I don't really attempt to moderate this board past dropping posts that are gibberish. Part of the whole reason for the existence of the board is to give folks a chance to see they're not alone, and so pretty much anything that's in the local public consciousness can be found here. The way in which it is expressed is a reflection, too.

BB, I'm not sure how I feel about credit cards. Example: I'm on staff at a University, and this is a "dry" campus. There are penalties for underage drinking, and some folks have lost their seats in class over it. However, credit cards are *aggressively* marketed on campus, and instead of having to be 21, you can easily get one at 18. As a result, we see students who are graduating who not only have student loan debt to deal with, but who owe a huge wad of credit card debt.

Most of the posts on this board are anonymous, so it wouldn't hurt anybody to come forward and answer the questions of whether or not the changes have hurt them. My impression is that *most* Americans are in at least a little bit of credit card debt, even those who have the resources to pay but just haven't for whatever reason. Curiousity demands some sort of answer, because the credit card companies certainly aren't going to tell you the truth.

I would chastise your board participants for their coarseness Jeff, but I don't think it would matter to most. It seems rather ingrained.

Not to say I can't live with coarse people, but hell, there are some foul mouths round these here parts, and it's sort of irritating to have to wade through 52 fuck shit damns to try and figure out if they have a point.

Cheers from Baghdad

I haven't noticed any change, Jeff. I only carry one card, and that just for emergencies so there is no carry-over balance from living beyond my means buying lifestyle on credit...it falls under your "personal responsibility" topic...if you can't pay for it, don't buy it.

See y'all at the peanut stand.

I've got a lot of people complaining that their credit card interest has shot through the roof, and at the same time their minimum payments have doubled or in one case, a woman told me hers had tripled.

What are y'all hearing about credit cards right now? I figured things would change after the law changed in October, but people are telling me they're hurting.

Big Debo,

You miss the entire point of the post. It's about personal responsibility and an explanation of why I don't do certain things. Of course, people like you only see the "gay" part.

It would be all the same if I were explaining responsibility from a heterosexual point of view. Get over the "gay" part and get a life, you fucking ignorant bitch! I am so sick of fucking cunts like you.

Hey Alice, I put the jasper sucks address at the bottum of the post so I kinda thought you could figure it out and it looks like you did or your parents told you. If not "dip", I guess your magical wisdom and power of prayer let you in on my big secret hiding place. Don't we wish your sympathy for meth addicts could help them break the habbit rather than pat them on the back and tell them its alright to choose meth(crank, ice, liquor) over their kids. You know the thing is you post your opinions on that board and everybody is to agree with how you feel about something or someone but if I do it and you don't agree with it you have a big hissy fit. Well Alice your not in wonder land anymore. Maybe you'll be out and about sometime or maybe someone you care about and somebody flying high runs into you and for what ever reason mashes your fucking empty self serving head in and I bet you have a different out look on their problem then. I would even go further to add that you won't buy into their "I couldn't help it, I wasn't in control because of the drugs. It was nothing personal hell the drugs even destroyed my family). Damn Alice, pray for the children of the bimbo that lost them or rather gave them up to use meth. Hell big boy, go look them in the eyes while their crying their hearts out and being ripped from their mothers arms. The bitch ain't the one that needs praying for, she needs to learn a lesson and a stiff one at that. Easing up on all these I can't help it mothers fuckers don't help them or us at all, better yet its their families and the rest of the world that pays for it. Besides they aren't doing meth because someone at church next to them were doing it, they do it because it makes them feel good and because 9 out of 10 times their already hanging out with BAD people. Hell wake man. I know I give a lot of people hell and most of the time I don't really mean anything by it but am I the only one here that feels the same way? If Im so wrong than why do we have some many people in the court house time after time again getting 4ht and 5th chances until they cross the line of no return and go down for a long time, why are their so many, hell I can see it would be a waste of breath with you or the other two fluff girls on the other site. No I got it, your on meth too or your wanting to get in Miss I've got a problems pants and try to help her out that way.LOL

Hey, no it all or whutever, whoever, whenever

Me & Church Lady know what personal responsibiliby is. I try to teach my flock some of the same, but most of them don't listen cause they've already been indoctrinated by government 'give-aways', that they don't think they need to be responsible for themselves anymore. Another generation and all will be working for the government 95% of the time instead of the only 50% as it is now. This is so we can let the government continue to take control over out lives by insisting they keep us in food, shelter, clothes, and, oh yes, government education that will indoctrinate all our children to continue to support and expect more of the same forevermore. Personal responsibility will be promoted through government indoctrination, ie, YOU will be responsible to work and contribute all your sweat, blood and tears to continue to promote governments idea of 'personal responsibility'. Government will be your GOD!!!

Amen, hallelulia,

See yah in Church.

This is particularly true in terms of Welfare. I don't mind one bit for my tax money feeding hungry kids; but these kids should be taken away from the parents who can't afford to raise them. Likewise, I bless my tax dollars to go to the truly disabled, the elderly, and American vets. All others need not apply.

Ignorance. One of the very reasons I hate Georgia, Jasper for sure sucks.

I have kids, was once termed "poor" by my own standards, but now I'm not, but according to these words, you'd have taken my children way back when.

From: InTheKnow

Oh, how I love this discussion concerning personal responsibility. As one of the local fags who posts habitually on this site, perhaps I have some comments of interest.

First of all, personal responsibility is incredibly important to each individual's life. People can't control unforseen events such as accidents or illnesses, but they can control a great deal concerning their lives. That control begins with personal responsibility.

The assumption has been made that because I'm gay, I'm running around every night and having as much sex with as many men as possible. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Being informed, I know the risks of promiscuity and possibility of contracting diseases such as HIV and hepatitis. I, therefore, choose to abstain from intercourse with men and one-night stands. Instead, when not in a monogamous relationship, I prefer dating and the companionship of other men and engage only in sexual activities that are virtually 100% safe. THAT is personal responsibility. I know the risks that are out there, and if I don't protect myself in every way possible, I am the fool.

That said, personal responsibility applies to every aspect of life: raising kids, taking care of finances, abstaining from drugs and alcohol or at the least driking responsibly, obtaining the career you want, etc.

I, for one, am tired of other people's lack of responsibility.

I was in a shit hole of a life for a long time, until I woke up and took responsibility for myself. Everyone should try it. It's liberating.

Ah, God, I don't know how they keep that thing going, or really even why they do. I go over there sometimes, because it is good for a chuckle about once a month.

The character of that board, for some reason, seems to be that people start writing and they can't stop. We have the occasional lengthy post (mostly from me) but for the most part we get to the point. Not so over there. After the first hundred words in a post you forget what the point of the post was in the first place.

I went to school with the editor over there, very nice person, a little too nice, really. If I had to name the one person in Pickens County who had sat still and listened patiently to the most bullshit for the longest period of time it might be him. I've never heard of him losing it from somebody saying something stupid, but I'd love to hear about it when it happens.

That whole thing about asking for medical advice kills me, too. No shit: I had a woman come on here one time and describe the symptoms of acute appendicitis in a young child, then she said that it had been going on for two days, and then asked what to do about it. I think we all lost it on that one. Then I'll be damned if she didn't get huffy about being called on it.

Bottom line: If you must ask for medical advice, don't ask a website readership and for God's sake don't ask a Jasper-based website readership. I'll even put JS at the end of the line there because it's patently obvious that JS was and is just something that I threw together one day when I was bored and therefore not really an organization that is serious about your health. It's one thing to ask for recommendations or to ask which doctors are ass-suckers (most of them here) but if your kid is sick for two days, stop typing and take him to a goddamn doctor somewhere. It really is just that simple.

In other news, I got hate mail from the company that runs the server that JS lives on:

We're sending you this message because your free Web page has reached 80% of your mailbox's monthly data transfer quota. If your page exceeds the total monthly quota, your Web pages may temporarily go offline until the start of the next calendar month.

Apparently, a lot more of you are reading these days than I realized. I may have to pony up for some more bandwidth.

You have a couple real dick shits over there like Kelly, Marie and a man named Alice. Personally I would rather be a boy named Sue but I guess it wasn't by choice. I've invited them to post here so we could really give them feedback like a few of them deserve. They really need to hear it like it is and then will see if they will pray for us like they do all of those poor pitiful people who are addicted to meth and pot because their parents or possibly just someone they met was addicted to drinking or not thinking. Hey I met guy one time who addicted to pot so that must be why Im addicted to sex with single women. Hell yes, no docters for me I have recieved medical help once again here on a measage board. That must be why people are seeking medical advise on the Jasper Pravada. Thats Im now on my way to being cured.

Email: From A land far, far away!

Greetings All!

Here's one for ya Uncle Jeff:

Remarkable Obituary:

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Mr. Common Sense. Mr. Sense had been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such value lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm and that life isn't always fair. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies? (adults, not kids, are in charge).

His health began to rapidly deteriorate when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. - Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Mr. Sense declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student; but, could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Finally, Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense finally gave up the ghost after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, she spilled a bit in her lap, and was awarded a huge financial settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by two stepbrothers; My Rights and Ima Whiner.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

Jeff, I agree. My point is that we CHOOSE to engage in activities that may not be healthy, whether it's drugs, booze, or whatever. If you pick up a crack pipe, etc., you made a decision to do that and there is no one in this day and age who isn't aware of the consequences of that action. Sure, once it's got you it's a bitch to get away from, but nobody forces that first hit.
